Questions about PiGate

Hi Mark Griffith.

I have been running my PiGate 24/7 for several days, as a type of "burn-in" test.? I just discovered that when my PiGate polls, it retrieves all traffic that has been sent to my Winlink address, NV2Z@....? My questions are as follows:

1)? How do I retrieve the messages that PiGate is holding for NV2Z?
2)? How do I prevent PiGate from retrieving my Winlink traffic?

Re: PiGate Primary Winlink User - No dashes in call sign allowed?

Well, when I get some time I'll look at the scripts.? Until then, use a valid Winlink user name without a dash or any other special characters.? The PiGate scripts setup local accounts and I'm nor sure if Linux will accept that.

It was never my intention to support when you want, so perhaps you might want to choose something else.

  2. The call sign cannot be changed unless we start from scratch with a fresh image.
Let me elaborate on each point.
We started by setting up PiGate to use a SignaLink USB.? We set the call sign in /root/direwolf.conf, we then copied /root/get_tnc_params.sh.DW to /root/get_tnc_params.sh as indicated in the documentation.? We then set about the admin interface and set the call sign (XX2X-4), date/time, location, set default RMS station, etc.? Reboot for good measure and ... nothing.? Polling would not trigger the SignaLink.? Contrast that with doing the exact same procedure with another fresh image and leaving off the -4 from the call sign and everything worked as expected.

The XX2X-4 call sign is registered with Winlink.org and works fine -in- Winlink on Windows (RMS Express).? But it does not work with the PiGate.? My guess is there is some Sed or Awk magic happening that doesn't like the "-4" in the call sign on first setup.

Second point.? Although there is a method to change the call sign, it doesn't work for use of the base PiGate functionality.? Let me explain.? We initially set-up the system with the XX2X-4 call and password.? When it didn't appear to work, we removed the -4, and it still didn't work.? We then tried an alternate known-good call sign and that didn't work.

We built a new fresh image that worked using my call sign. We then attempted to change it to another, and again, it would not work.? Changing it -back- to mine then again made everything work.

We would sincerely like to understand why using a -4 in the call sign does not work, and why we can't easily change the base call used in the PiGate.

Thank you,
Asa? Jay

Re: PiGate on Raspberry Pi 4

Tonight I got back to the Pi 4.

I ran Mark's script to get the model and it displays as:
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.5

Doing the cat /proc/cpuinfo I get:
Hardware:? BCM2711
Revision:?? b03115
Serial:??????? 100000005b25bf54
Model:?????? Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.5

That model is not listed on the revision site listed previously:?
Since the last model listed on that site is a Pi 4 Rev 1.4, my guess is this model is not yet listed, making it the most recent, latest and greatest.? And it appears to run PiGate just fine.

:)? Happy Camper.

Re: PiGate RMS

Mark Griffith

The PiGate system is the complete OS image, not a single software program.? It consists of the integration of several software packages that already exist in the Raspberry Pi OS along with some PHP programs for the web interface and some custom shell scripts for the administration interface.

The receiving and sending of email through the Winlink system can be done without the administration interface.? My system here at home runs 24/7, sending and receiving email through Winlink, and I rarely access the admin interface.? In fact, everything could be done from the command line if you knew the Linux commands to get stuff done.? I developed the admin interface to make it easier for hams without extensive knowledge of Linux to use the device.? Once I go through the initial setup, all I use is an email app on my smart phone which sends an email to the PiGate, which in turn sends it through Winlink to the destination.? Incoming email is the reverse.? It's like me sending this email to you, once I press send, it all happens in the background and it just works.

The integration is kinda tricky and can't be done without manually adding the correct software packages and making changes to configuration files and things like that.? So if I want update the OS or the kernel, I need to rebuild the whole thing again.? Kinda a pain in the rear, but I can't think of another way.

Once you download the image and put it on an SD card, you have all the special PHP and shell scripts that can be viewed so it's really open source.

So the short answer is it can't be done using GitHub.
