Red Cross donation time again
Sunday was time for another Red Cross donation here in Torrance, CA. This was my115th donation in 45 years, and my 30th "Power Red" donation. I found out years ago my O+ blood is CMV-negative (an adult virus), so my blood can be given to babies and children who don't yet have the antibodies to fight CMV. I came home and watched the Bristol NASCAR race.?

Re: OT: HBO special Tuesday night on Dan Weldon, his widow and sons
It was deemed nessessary to give Savage a blood transfusion at the hospital due to blood loss, but tragically the blood given Savage was contaminated with hepatitis and over the course of the month in the hospital Savage's internal body organs began to shutdown due to the reaction to hepatitis. Savage died solely by effects of hepatitis one month after the accident.?

Re: OT: HBO special Tuesday night on Dan Weldon, his widow and sons
Thomas, I had the privilege of seeing Swede Savage race on Dan Gurney's team in their AAR Barracudas at the 1970 Lime Rock Trans-Am race. It seemed their relationship was quite similar to Jackie Stewart and Francois Cevert when he was killed at the 1973 Watkins Glen GP. Stewart retired from racing without driving in that race. He had planned on retiring at the end of that season anyway. Savage sure had the touch and was destined to be at or near the top. OT: HBO special Tuesday night on Dan Weldon, his widow and sons
? Portrait Of a Racer And His Widow A widowed mother seems an unlikely hero of a sports documentary, though “hero” may not be quite the right descriptor for Susie Wheldon and “ The Lionheart” is much more than a competition story. The title refers, ostensibly, to Dan Wheldon, the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner who died in a nightmarish, 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October 2011. Ms. Wheldon’s dilemma is how—and maybe why—she should direct her two young sons as they chase their own dreams of a career with IndyCar. Dan Wheldon himself proves an almost ethereal presence in this grief-struck film by producer-director Laura Brownson (“ The Rachel Divide”). We see the British driver in his early days of karting (the junior version of big-time, open-wheeled racing), on the scene of his later successes and in various offtrack interviews. He is remembered,?not always warmly, but with admiration, by the fellow racers on the Andretti Green Racing team—Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan and Bryan Herta—with whom he won his first Indy 500 in 2005. It was a Bryan Herta Autosport car that Wheldon was driving in the fatal 2011 race, which is remembered by many in the film as an accident waiting to happen, a “pack racing” situation involving a 34car field. Wheldon was pursuing a $5 million bonus offered by IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard if Wheldon could win the race after starting in?last place. Mr. Bernard, we are told in an end title, declined to be interviewed for the film. But it is Susie Wheldon who is the soul of “ The Lionheart” and whose courage, mixed with confusion, marks it as a story that certainly transcends the track. What does a mother do when her sons— Sebastian and Oliver, age 12 and 10 at the time of filming—want to continue their missing father’s legacy, show some talent, and join the Andretti organization as junior drivers? Does she follow them to Las Vegas—the?site of her husband’s?death—for one of their own sport’s biggest events? She is never less than supportive of her sons and their ambitions. They are not experienced enough to recognize the situation they have put her in; getting behind the wheel is clearly a way of coping with being fatherless, and with the shadow of their famous dad. Though it is only vaguely acknowledged, they are far too young to have anything but the faintest memories of the man himself. But they certainly know who he was. Rather than wallow in the family’s bereavement, Ms. Brownson operates in two lanes—one the Dan Wheldon story, the other that of his survivors. The interviews with the Andretti drivers, with owner Michael?Andretti, with racing great Scott Dixon and with Dan’s father, Clive, are all terrific; the footage of Ms. Wheldon is nothing short of intrusive at times. But, as is made very clear, she’ll do anything for her boys. The Lionheart Tuesday, 9 p.m., HBO?Mr. Anderson is the Journal’s TV critic.

Re: Eddie Pullen
Hi Dean
I am not sure exactly sure which Mercer my grandfather drove, but the special Mercer factor racer sounds right.? Unfortunately, I do not have the block number picture, but i did get a chance to see the car up close.? it is owned by George Wingard, who invited my dad, brother and I to come see the cars.? I attached a picture of my dad standing next to the car that had my grandfather's engine.? You will notice the faded 21 on the grill.? George explained that as he was restoring the car he thought it was number 21 (the driver's name escapes my memory).? Something caused him to rethink his conclusion and that is when he researched the block number based on his collection of over 50,000 historic racing pictures.? He told us that he found a picture of my grandfather standing next to his car (another picture I wish I had) with the hood open that the engine visible.? He tracked down the negative of the photo at some museum or historical archive, blew it up and could see the block number, the same number that was on the engine he had.? He then changed the car to number 4.? I also attached another picture of a different car that George told us he thinks is one my grandfather drove. Thanks for your stories. David Small Glendale CA |

Re: Eddie Pullen
开云体育Hi David:I ran my 1912 yellow Mercer 35-C at Monterey about 2004 — not certain of the year. My car might have been the one you saw. But I thought your grandfather mostly drove the very special Mercer factory racers, not the better known Raceabouts. The factory race cars had engines larger than the Raceabouts. I do not think the Raceabouts had engine numbers — at least I never saw one on my engine. My car DID have a transmission number and a separate chassis number. The title for my car used the transmission number. I wish I had never sold it — a fabulous car. I ran mine on the motorways in England and passed just about everything in sight — would easily run 85/90 mph. The problem was stopping it. The car had only rear wheel brakes and a transmission brake. The rear wheels were so narrow that the wheels would lock and the car would barely slow down. I once caught the grease around the transmission brake on fire from the heat — had to quickly lift the floor boards and put the fire out — no damage. E Dean Butler\ Broughton Green, UK ?
