Hi Dean
I am not sure exactly sure which Mercer my grandfather drove, but the special Mercer factor racer sounds right.? Unfortunately, I do not have the block number picture, but i did get a chance to see the car up close.? it is owned by George Wingard, who invited my dad, brother and I to come see the cars.? I attached a picture of my dad standing next to the car that had my grandfather's engine.? You will notice the faded 21 on the grill.? George explained that as he was restoring the car he thought it was number 21 (the driver's name escapes my memory).? Something caused him to rethink his conclusion and that is when he researched the block number based on his collection of over 50,000 historic racing pictures.? He told us that he found a picture of my grandfather standing next to his car (another picture I wish I had) with the hood open that the engine visible.? He tracked down the negative of the photo at some museum or historical archive, blew it up and could see the block number, the same number that was on the engine he had.? He then changed the car to number 4.? I also attached another picture of a different car that George told us he thinks is one my grandfather drove.
Thanks for your stories.
