Tyrell wasn't first!

Peter Helck art of the 1907 Christie Grand Prix car.? Christie added the extra outside front tire for barnstorming dirt oval tracks in 1908.

from Lee Stohr

After an exciting century of technical progress, ALL racing has dribbled down to over regulated, arbitrary, cookie cutter racing ... not only the machines, but the tracks and the drivers!

Eddie Pullen was a very highly regarded driver in his day — top driver for Mercer. Mercer was based in Trenton, NY, where Eddie was born.

Re: 100 years ago tomorrow

David,?

Unfortunately, the article had no more details.? What I sent was what was published.? Have you tried to find him in historical newspapers, like or .?? Two other possibilities are to check out the Glendale library to see if they have subscriptions to searchable?newspaper archives that you can access.? ?Additionally, a lot of libraries have reciprocal agreements.? Maybe Glendale has an agreement that would give you access to the Los Angeles library, which may have the services mentioned above or may have access to the?Los Angeles Times archives.

Good luck and let us know if you find some information on Eddie.

100 years ago tomorrow

I just found a "100 years ago" article in a current newspaper:

"On Feb. 24, the Beverly Hills Speedway hosts its final race. The speedway is torn down as property values in Beverly Hills skyrocket."

Ascot Park Gardena Lives!!

Thought I would share again with the group some historical materials I still have from Ascot Park Gardena, California. In early 1991 I saw a report on ESPN a report that Ascot was really about to go away for ever so I drove over to Ascot, climbed under a fence and proceeded to go through an emotional withdrawal experience. There was still some discarded? drink cups lying around so I scooped up some of the track. I also got some concrete and a small section of grandstand. Ascot existed for 33 1/2 years. It's been gone now for 33 1/2 years. There is no reason to go and visit the area now as it is a giant flat auto insurance auction yard. No evidence that a race track was once there. All I have is the Skippy Peanut Butter jar filled with clay and concrete, and seat #22 from an unknown row of grandstands, and the memories .
