Upcoming Motorsport Memorabilia Show featuring Open & Road Racing Items

Motorsport Memorabilia Show featuring Open & Road Racing Items

For those in the Chicago, Milwaukee Madison area.

The North Lake Drive 100 MPH Club is hosting our first annual Motorsport Memorabilia show featuring open wheel and road racing items on Saturday February 24 at the Delafield Brewhaus, scheduled from 10am to 3pm. Vendor spots will be $30 per 8 foot table and $50 for 2 tables. So please contact us via FB messenger or at szautke at gmail.com .? If you would like to participate. It's a $5 entry fee for spectators/buyers will get you a wristband to come in, have some coffee and donuts, purchase a few items, run upstairs for some lunch, and come back to see what you missed. We would love to see you support the club, tell your friends and then come and join us!

?

What is the North Lake Drive 100 MPH Club?

The ancient origins of our Club can be traced to an event that occurred on an early Summer evening in 1953 where a chance encounter at Buddy Beek’s bar on Milwaukee’s east side between Bugatti collector Dave Uihlein and Packard restorer Bob Klaus led to a discussion regarding Dave’s Type 57 Bugatti. The discussion then led to an agreement to take the Bugatti which was garaged a short distance away at Dave’s mother’s home on N. Lake Drive for a “ride”.

What followed was hardly a “ride.”

It was instead an epic high-speed run north along Lake Drive as the straight-eight supercharged Bugatti with open exhausts shattered the evening calm as it hurtled northward toward Bayside at speeds in excess of 100 mph. Soon other sounds were heard – anemic siren sounds emanating from several Shorewood Police cars (‘48 Studebakers), as they took up the chase in a futile effort to curb the speeding racer.

As word of the Uihlein-Klaus escapade spread, a group of High School students at the old Milwaukee Country Day School were so inspired by the event that to honor and immortalize it they formed the North Lake Drive 100 MPH Club – open to anyone, who in the presence of another member could reach a speed of 100 MPH on North Lake Drive without being arrested. The downhill stretch of the Drive between School Road and Montclaire Avenue with its absence of access streets, soon became the preferred and safest section of the road for those who sought to qualify for Club membership.

Early qualifying and founding members included George Brumder, Doug Anderson, Tom Mac Arthur, Fred Madison and Weasel McClay. Others soon joined and Club membership reached 12. During the early 1960’s meetings were held periodically at Beek’s east side bar but regrettably interest in the Club waned and in 1963 it was folded in to the Lower Lake Drive Athletic Association – a popular Lake Park touch football and tennis organization that had been recently formed by Lee Durand.

When the Lower Lake Drive Athletic Association was disbanded in the mid 1970s, due to declining membership and lack of interest, the NLD100MPH Club entered a long period of dormancy.

Happily this dark age for our Club ended in 1989 when the organization was resurrected at a meeting at the University Club of Milwaukee attended by a group of enthusiasts that included: Bill Porter, Ron Schneider, Ron Scoma, Harold Zimdars, Tom Mac Arthur, Michael Macintosh, Bill Schley, Bob Birmingham, and Dick Eisenmann. At that meeting Bill Schley was selected as “Presider” (the Club has no officers) and David Uihlein was named Honorary Chairman.

?

The intervening years have seen phenomenal growth – far beyond what the founders envisioned – with current membership now in excess of 250 and growing steadily.

Today meetings are held twice a year, in spring and fall. Membership is open to anyone who has raced, races currently, has a connection with auto racing, owns, collects or simply enjoys racing cars.

?

Thank you for your time.

Tom Kinney

Not sure if it was posted on here. Sadly Tom Kinney whom those that attended the old 'revived" Bench Racing Weekend in Indy in the late-1990's and 2000's may remember Tom? who sadly passed in April. It was mentioned in the NI500CC Newsletter (National Indy 500 Collectors Club).

Thomas "Tom" Jay Kinney, 73, of?https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/local/indiana/evansville-area, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Heritage Center.

Tom was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 7, 1950 to the late James "Artie" and Marvel Marie (Travis) Kinney. A lifelong resident of Speedway, he graduated from Speedway High School in 1968 and attended Ball State University. Tom worked for Carrier (United Technologies) for over 40 years as an air conditioner assembler. He was a race historian and an Indianapolis 500 enthusiast. He wrote several articles and contributed to three books detailing the historic achievements of 1920s race car driver Frank Lockhart.

Tom is survived by his sister, Julie Schraeder (Todd) of?https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/local/indiana/evansville-area. He was the beloved uncle of Casey Schraeder (Brooke Campbell) of Mt. Vernon, IN and Jimmy Schraeder of?https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/local/colorado/denver?and great-uncle to Kaydee and Sean. Tom was preceded in death by his parents. A private celebration of Tom's life will be held at Browning Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the staff at the Heritage Center and Holiday Village for their compassionate care.

Hey guys,

There is a large racing auction coming up next week that I am involved with. Thought some of you might be interested. Even if you are not a collector there are some amazing items to view and read about. I have about 900 lots from about 20 of my clients consigned in the auction.

?

Here are a couple of my favorite items:

Lot #3555 1942 Lucky Teter Thrill Show Lakewood Park Poster

Lot #3207 Johnny Rutherford's 1965 USAC Sprint Car Champion Jacket

Lot #3708 Jerry Unser Proclamation Pieces

Lot #3100 1954 Bobby Grim IMCA Sprint Car Trophy

?

It has been a blast seeing and researching these items. The owner of the 1915 St. Patrick’s Day Grand Prix did not know Barney Oldfield won the race.

?

Enjoy!

Re: For Auld Lang Syne, 2023

I only found out today via another forum, that John Krebs passed away March 16, 2023. He was 72. John was a stalwart in NASCAR's Western series, and had been around racing pretty much his whole life as his father, Art, was a long-time NASCAR official. Before his time in the Western series, John ran Southern California short tracks, like Ascot Park, Orange Show, and for a time, Cajon Speedway.

Allard (off topic)

Attached is a photo of an Allard owned at the time by Bill Vance.? Mr. Vance owned a Chrysler/Plymouth dealership in Topeka, Kansas.
My father, Roy Still, was a mechanic at the dealership and is shown in the photo under the car.?
Roy was also the mechanic for the Allard.
Mr. Vance replaced the original Cadillac motor with a Chrysler hemi motor and drag raced the car.?
This car eventually ended up with E. Dean Butler, one of our Racing History members.

Please excuse me if I have posted this photo before or if it is off topic.
