Re: For Auld Lang Syne, 2023

Edited

With more and more being announced only via Facebook, it's nigh near impossible to keep track the way I used to, especially as 2023 was a personal mess with a chaotic move and computer issues. But, with that in mind, and realizing I'm likely forgetting worthy folks from Facebook announcements, here are a few more from the Western U.S.:

Conrad Cavallero, 78, raced stock cars for years at Petaluma (CA) Speedway and made visits to other Bay Area tracks.

Greg Klassen, 66, raced pavement late models at Bakersfield's Mesa Marin Raceway.

Lowell Moural, 72, was owner/promoter of Cycleland near Chico, California and did track maintenance at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway.

Darrell McCaulley, 76, raced late models and IMCA-style modifieds on dirt at Rocky Hill Speedway in Porterville, CA, Bakersfield Speedway and Santa Maria Speedway.

Joel Terry, 83, raced super modifieds around the west, but particularly around his Salt Lake City home, racing at the old State Fairgrounds Speedway, then Bonneville Raceway's paved oval.

Eddie Wachs, 87, competed in various road racing series from the 1960s: Trans-Am U2 class and the SCCA 2.5 Liter Challenge Series for small sedans (both in an Alfa), as well as IMSA GT.

I remember the horse racing movie "Seabiscuit" and how the producer's took profound liberties with the known historical facts but I liked the movie.

Slides from the camera of Steve Hammatt

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Steve had asked me to scan these for him in 2011, and then I returned the originals with a CD of the digital copies. But I thought some of you would appreciate them although I don¡¯t believe he ever shared them. I have used some recently acquired software to clean them up a bit, and removed some of the dust spots. They are in an album at?/g/RacingHistory/album?id=292030&p=Created,,,20,2,0,0

This Day in Auto History
1.4.1944
David W. Rodger, Vice President and Secretary of the Federal-Mogul Corporation and an employee of the firm since 1915, died at age 50. The company was founded in Detroit in 1899 by J. Howard Muzzy and Edward F. Lyon as the Muzzy Lyon Company. Muzzy and Lyon went into business together producing mill supplies and rubber goods and formed a subsidiary called Mogul Metal Company where they launched various bearing innovations.
The Muzzy Lyon Company bearings business proved successful and in the early 1900s and became the pair's main concern, with Buick as one of their earliest customers. To solidify their success, the entire Muzzy Lyon Company merged with Federal Bearings and Bushing in 1924 to become Federal-Mogul Corporation. Today the company developes, manufactures, and supplies products for automotive, commercial, aerospace, marine, rail, and off-road vehicles, as well as industrial, agricultural, and power-generation applications.

Ferrari Movie

While on the subject of movies, the Mille Miglia and nits, etc. go on YouTube and search 1953 Mille Miglia and while you are there search 1955 Spa. These two wonderful black-and-white films will never see the inside of a movie theater, but they are the real deal and they are nit-free. (OK, color might be better.)

All the best,

Dave Reese <reesed@...> added the photo album Steve Hammatt's Slides : I had the honor of scanning a package of slides of photos that Steve had taken and sent to me in 2011. At the time I was using a Minolta Dimage scanner, and had limited software to work on these photos. I am now trying to clean them up a bit more, and will post a few until I am all done.

Re: Ferrari movie reviews

OK, I'm fastidious in seeking out details, having had a love affair with the technology and lore of racing ... but feel the nit picking has a purpose in 'improving the breed' of movies, just as any REAL competition does.

?

Hollywood has become sloppy, only putting their green light on "can't fail" rehashes of what's worked before. If it's a car movie ... copy Fast and Furious! If it involves interpersonal relationships, fall back on Reality TV! If it's a love story, copy soap operas! If it's a financial potboiler, copy Wolf of Wall Street!

?

My point is the movies that I love let the real events and drama come out, and not shoehorn them into the tried and true scripts. Movies like LeMans, Rush, The world's fastest Indian, and A Man and a Woman dealt with the real history, letting those unfamiliar aspects develop and capture the audience ... not just rely on knee jerk pratfalls to carry the story.

?

Cheers, Bob

I thought the Ferrari movie was great. Nits can always be picked; I have seen reviews where car guys have complained about the cars in the Mille Miglia racing side-by-side, when in the actual race they rarely did. So when you go, just remember it is a MOVIE for the entertainment of a general audience, enjoy the cars and the scenery and you will have a fun time.

Re: Steve Hammatt

This is truly sad. I have some images on my computer from when Steve mailed some of his old slides to me to scan after seeing some of my slides that I had scanned. I never shared them with others, just with Steve as they were his work although he gave me permission to use them with a photo credit to him. I will always think of him while looking at these images, just as I am so honored to have an autographed photo of Len Sutton on the wall in my family room.?

One hundred twenty five years ago, an editorial in the New York Times made a reference to an "automobile" on this day. It was the first known use of the word.

Re: Ferrari movie reviews

In the last 60 years of auto racing movies, Ferrari seems to have always come in 2nd place. I haven't heard too much about the current Ferrari movie but I can tell you I despise fake computer generated racing or 300mph laps at a race track. Time will tell if I spend the $$ to see it. As of now, I don't think so. ??

Ferrari movie reviews

I consider Brock Yates to be a memorable friend who published a lot of my blatherings, always sought out the outrageous, and lived the mantra, "never let the facts ruin a good story!"

?

I helped stage one Cannonball event and completed three of his "One Lap" ventures. Hollywood corrupted both of those events, and chose Yates' supposition and innuendo filled manuscript to base their Ferrari movie. Nuff said!

The pre-release hype has been astounding, and seems aimed at disappointing the enthusiast viewers, especially the historically focused nit pickers. It looks like the budget was spent on promo, staging and visuals, and beneath the polished skin, you're going to find a stovebolt mill.

?

Cheers, Bob
