Many thanks for the info there Iain, really appreciated, I think I'll risk an M then & see how it sounds, I had heard they had a "bid" socket, but what that actually was & what practical use it could be I had no idea, but if there's no obvious drawback compared with the std 351 I'll get one ordered.

The practical reason is that the modified sets have wider audio bandwidth
through the BID 300 socket - sufficient for 9600 baud packet and other wide
data modes.
The interest reason is because they were designed as a portable alternative
to the RT353/DMU secure speech combination used in landrovers, for the
Royal Marines primarily. As such they are rarer and have associations with
a particular unit.
Whether the modification/refurbishment to make a 351 into a 351M makes them
younger sets or reduces their reliability I'm not sure - my only in-service
failure of a 351 since I got my sets was a 351M so far.
