Hi all SSB firmware was released into beta on 17-Mar-2025 after 9+ months of development. Many thanks to everyone who bravely helped test it and patiently provided their feedback and observations. There are now quite a few YouTube videos, forum reports and other social media mentions about on-air successes with QMX SSB. Now that it has been at least 6 weeks in beta and I believe most of the issues have been resolved, it's time to promote it to an official version. I have called this version 1_02_000 and published it on the QMX page http://qrp-labs.com/qmx where I have also published the updated operating manual, which grew from 111 pages to 134 pages. The main changes are: SSB (obviously!) including CESSB, TX Equalization, Mic AGC, VOX, Pre-distortion and and and... Addition of up to two more USB Virtual COM serial ports (up to three total). All of the hardware tests such as RF and SWR sweep, and Diagnostics, are now available on the LCD too. New CAT commands for LCD contents, S-meter, AGC-meter, Power meter, SWR meter, SSB source Complete list (relative to 1_00_027 the previous official version): SSB modes added (USB and LCB), with CESSB, TX Equalization, Mic AGC, VOX, Phase pre-distortion and more Rationalization of menus, grouped into CW, Digi and SSB submenus (now Keyer and Decoder are submenus of CW) Added up to two more USB Virtual COM serial ports (configurable) LCD versions of AF, RF, Image, LPF, Test ADC I/Q sweeps (miniature graph on LCD) New function PA mod. test to check operation of amplitude modulator Diagnostics screens are now available on the LCD interface too Now remembers previous menu location on ALL menus regardless of nesting level Add way of forcing factory reset, press Menu (left) button during power-up Change TX color in diagnostics screen from red to blue, to avoid confusion since red things are errors Added CAT LC command to retrieve LCD contents Added CAT commands SA (AGC meter), SM (S meter), PC (Power meter), SW (SWR meter) Added CAT command SS (get/set SSB input source) Bug fix: PTT P did not work properly Bug fix: Incorrect PA voltage display on the Diagnostics screen 73 Hans G0UPL http://qrp-labs.com https://www.buymeacoffee.com/g0upl

SDR with the QMX
26
Hello, I am interested in enabling the IQ and displaying the information on my PC. I know it's possible but I have never attempted it. What SDR software should I try (I run both Windows & Linux) Has anyone done this? Please share your experience Is it simply a matter of enabling IQ in the Digi menu and pointing to the sound card from something like SDRPlay? Thanks in advance!

QMX+ Front PCB to large for enclosure
6
Searched but did not find anything - Completed the QMX+ build and was assembling into the case when I found that the front panel PCB will not fit into the case. The case is 96mm inside. The case is 99mm between the grooves The front metal panel is 106mm at the widest point The front PCB is 105mm across. Basically I am trying to squish 105mm into a 96mm opening. Not going to happen. Photos are attached -- Since it is completely built, should I try and Dremel 10mm off the front PCB? TIA Michael, KG5UMH

QMX 40-10?
8
Is it possible to build a QMX that would cover 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12 & 10? I¡¯d much prefer that instead of 60-15. Don W6CZ

Pacific Antenna mic used on new QMX+ not working?
7
I just built the Pacific Antenna electret mic kit to use on my new QMX+ with updated firmware to operate SSB...following the instructions in the QRP-Lab's manual to wire the mic connector, when I key the new mic, it transmits what I believe is a two-tone test signal! So, it keys the rig with RF output but somehow the QMX+ transmits a two-tone signal always...any thoughts what's going on? Thanks and 73 ed

QMX+ Build - No Power on Diagnostics screen (pressing T)
27
#power
#test
#troubleshooting
I have corrected all the issues with my enameled torroid soldering joints, so those look reasonable now on all bands. That said, I have no power whatsoever when pressing "T" on the diagnostics screen. I am using 3 cell LIPOs charged to 11.9vdc (checked after charging with multimeter) for power. T501 wound for 12v. - Initial startup was at 7v, just to be safe. No issues or magic smoke so slowly raised voltage to 12V with no issues. No pops or anything else. - Checked T507 by removing and testing, then reinstalling. - Removed and rewound T501, RWTST, to eliminate concerns of over twisting the wires. - Rewound T401 and checked for continuity on the 3 pairs, then installed it. - T502 has continuity and the correct amount of wraps. - The dummyload I am using is one I purchased along with the kit. Assembly was enjoyable and it measures 49.5 ohms. When I press "T" I get 0.0 power. I checked the SWR protection set it higher, and restarted the radio, but still get 0.0 on the diagnostics screen. I then turned the SWR protection completely, then restarted the radio and still 0.0. The power transistors DO get slightly warm, but not suddenly. From what I can tell, everything is as it should be, but I'm still getting no power to the dummyload. I have no actual antennas yet, but should have one completed in a couple hours. I checked several patch cords (between radio and dummyload) and they all are working correctly, but still no power. What should I be checking now? Is there a test procedure for this specific issue? There has to be others who have encountered this before... Thanks again, btw... Ahand59

QMX+ appears dead after firmware update
3
Hi all, I had just completed the build of my QMX+ today and was very pleased that on first power up it sprang into life and appeared to be all functional. I then saw at power up that the firmware revision was 1.00.27 so I had downloaded the 1.02.000, extracted the file, then connected the unit to the PC. After entering the firmware update the screen went blank as expected and a USB drive appeared on the PC showing the eeprom and the QMX file. I then copied across the new file which appeared to go ok but nothing after that. I waited to see if it would come back after a while but nothing. At this point I disconnected the power and reapplied it, attempted to turn on from the front panel but no response. The unit now appears dead. I built this unit as a 12V version and am running it on a bench PSU set to 11.5V. Before I did the update it was drawing around 130mA. Now, after connecting the power and pressing the power on button, although there is no display the unit is drawing around 180mA but otherwise is dead. Any ideas what could be at fault or what could be checked? Ian

SSB Audio/Mic Issues
2
I built the K6ARK mic per the specs listed for the QMX/(tr)uSDX etc including using the recommended high sensitivity (-24db) electret condenser and the mic works fine when transmitting on my (tr)uSDX however when transmitting on the QMX I'm getting an unintelligible signal. I have ran the mic gain utility via terminal which shows the correct levels, however upon transmit on my factory assembled QMX I still can't seem to get satisfactory transmit audio. I've also tried a factory reset. Any ideas? TIA de W?YEM

#QMX rev 3 - High Band
2
#qmx
So I finally got around to build my QMX High band after looking at it on a shelf for the last year. I thought thing had gone pretty smoothly and appeared to be so with the initial power on. I built it for 12 vdc, but used a bench power supply set at 8vdc and saw about 170 milliamp draw. I did the firmware upload and then I couldn't get the display to work. There was only 1.6 vdc on the 3rd pin of the side closest to the display. No other pins had voltage. I turned up the voltage on the power supply to 11vdc, but did not see an increase in amperage, in fact it went down to about 70 milliamps. I was even able to use the jumper to re-initialize it and saw the same readings. So I started taking voltage readings around the board. The 2x4 (S302) and saw this Top row (closest to LCD) Pins 1 - 0vdc 2- 10.8vdc 3- 3.2vdc 4- 3.2vdc Bottom row 1-2.9vdc 2- 3.28vdc 3- 3.25vdc 4- 3.25vdc Then I started to poke around some more on the power supply boards, and I believe I must have been a little sloppy taking some voltage readings, because now it won't power on at all. I can see the amperage increase to 10 milliamps when I try to turn it on, but it immediately goes back to zero when I release the encoder. Which makes me think I damaged something in the power hold circuitry, so I suppose I'm buying replacement power supplies, but I'm hesitant because that won't fix the original problem it just gets me back to where I started. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

PTT over CAT - WSJT-X vs fldigi
4
#fldigi
#QMXplus
#ssb
#wsjt-x
I just updated to the new SSB firmware on QMX+ Rev. 3 and was hoping to try out MSK144 mode in WSJT-X. (Probably not enough power to be heard by anyone, but still.) I have found the PTT over CAT control to be inconsistent when in USB mode. Usually the first TX works and then the rest briefly trigger then un-trigger PTT. (DIGI mode still works just great.) Looking at the CAT monitor doesn't show anything odd (no early RX; sent) and it's not triggering SWR protection or anything. PTT over CAT in USB mode in fldigi---also using Hamlib, same Kenwood TS-480 config---works fine. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that WSJT-X is sending either 'TX;' or 'TX1;' depending on the configuration; while fldigi is sending 'TX0;' which for some reason is more reliable in convincing the QMX+ to transmit. Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions or ways to convince WSJT-X to send 'TX0;' instead? TNX 73 de Tim AF0CQ

PSK31 with QMX + Digipan
15
Hi all, just some hints how to configure QMX and Digipan. QMX: - SSB Menue: Mic AGC ON; Input: USB; MIC Gain 50; Compression 0 USB Gain: Adjust for 50% power on idle PSK Signal. (I am using USB Gain 5) - VOX: ON - CESSB: ON Make sure your antenna SWR is ok. If "Protection" is on it might stop your TX. (Its not the fault of Digipan, hi) DIGIPAN: Set your Serial port (where QMX is connected), no RTS/DTR as we are using VOX. Soundcard: Type: "Computer soundcard"; Input/ Output: "digital interface QMX"; sample rate: 11025 Thats it. Ready to make first PSK contacts! Good DX and hope to work you in PSK. 73 Mat DF2OF

QMX Supply Voltage
7
Based on the large red warning on page 4 of the QMX+ assembly manual it is clear that Hans intended us to power the QMX (and presumably the QMX+) from 9V and tolerates us modifying the rig to operate 12V at our own risk. It is also clear from the discussions I have been able to find that most people opt for a 12V supply (along with various hacks and bodges to actually run it from 13.8 V or more). Given that, for a real world battery I'm going to need a buck/boost converter to get a stable supply that won't kill the rig 9V is just as easy to get as 12V (Assuming I go for a buck/boost converter rather than the three diode bodge) Given that a hardware choice has to be made early on in the build process I'd rather not have to change this at a later point so would like to pick the right option from the start. Has anyone had issues with running either 9V or 12V that might make one a preferred choice over the other? I've seen Druck converters recommended but here in the UK the choice seems to be limited just one buck converter and that needs a 1.5V overhead so would need a fully charged LiFe or Lead Acid battery to exceed the 13.5V I'd need to supply to get a 12V output. If I go for a 3S LiPo battery the voltage range is between 9 and 12.6V (3V-4.2V per cell) making 9V operation or a boost converter essential. There are other devices on eBay that claim to have both buck and boost capability but I have no idea how noisy they'd be.

50W Amp for QCX
9
I plan to build two QCX+: one 20M band and one 30M band. If I also build a 50W Amp for QCX with the 20M band low pass filter am I right to guess that this 50W Amp will work well in agrrement with the regulations about harmonics with the 20M and 30M QCX+ without any need for other filters? 73 - Pierre - FK8IH

QMX Example of mic input noise with no mic attached?
3
Can anyone provide an example of how high the mic input noise level is in the terminal tool with without the mic attached in firmware 1.0.2? I see 3 grey bars in the mic test with the gain set to +50db, which looks significantly higher than Hans' from the manual. I'm trying to determine if I have an internal noise issue with my unit.
