Hello Evan,
many thanks for your hints.
?
I measured the voltages at the parts you mentioned:
Q4: Gate 7.29 V? (TX 7.34 V)
? ? ? ?Source 14.24 V (TX equal)? (I saw with a loupe that Drain is not connected to pad, I think intentionally?)
R10: 7.29/14.24 V
R11: 0.24/7.29 V
L1: 0.99/1.01 V (TX plus 0.1 V)
L2: 0.24/0.26 V (TX plus 0.1 V)
Q6: Gate 0.24 V
? ? ? ?Drain 0.0 V
? ? ? ?Source 0.0 V (TX 0.14 V)
?
Evan, what is ment by "being open" of R10, L10 or Q4?
?
Thank you and 73 de Roland

Thank you for your vote of confidence. I retired in 2015 after 44 years of showing up for work (meaning family practice in northern Michigan). And someone even paid me for showing up. In reality I never worked a day in my life. Every job I had I found a way to make it fun. Ham radio made it enjoyable even in the trying moments. Doing research in this area (seeing what one’s brain wants to see) would be a neat research topic and I am sure someone has gotten their PhD researching it. Last night my grandson was searching for a certain part in a mess of Lego pieces. I looked and didn’t see it either. Then I moved the bunch of pieces around on the table and the hunted piece just jumped out at both of us. Sometimes a different set of eyes or different lighting or just approaching the search from a different direction or angle makes a difference. Time does too. Coming back tomorrow everything looks different with a rested brain. Just did a Google AI check and it came back with a very good description of this tooic. My wife has a different set of eyes and brain connections. She would have made a good detective. She can walk in a room, do a quick look, and leave and describe every feature. But she is “interested” in what is in someone’s new home, furniture, or whatever. I see a room, a place to sit down , feel the temperature (I am always cold), and the person I am visiting. Just re iterating: we see what we are looking for or are interested in. And the darned grocery companies. They occasionally change the color of the box and that throws me off. Or move the product to a different shelf or aisle. Really throws me off. And the big disaster one night. A new Chinese radio (back 10 years or so before they discovered how cheep it was to provide polarity protection). Late at night. Connected the battery power. RED is positive +++++ isn’t it? Unless the vendor at the swap who sold batteries put a red price sticker at the negative - - - - pole. Magic smoke and smell produced. Ha! Happy New Year to all. Hope I made some laugh or at least smile. Remember when we were kids? We laughed and smiled so often. My observation is that many of us now find that the stiff tired muscles in our body, especially our faces make it much more difficult to do the same now. It takes practice. But it spreads like a tired yawn. And makes everyone involved feel better. (Seen in a family card game last night.) Smiling is GOOD MEDICINE! Be the REASON someone smiles today. Re: Solder
Hi Daniel,
?
fully agree. The higher temperature requirement can be problematic.
When I'm soldering connectors I also open my secret drawer with the remaining 60/40, to avoid melting structural parts.
Nevertheless, lead free is now my main solder.
As I mentioned above this required a reasonable soldering station (and gave me a reason to buy one) and some trials for a good solder.
Furthermore you have to close your eyes at the checkout when ordering fresh Sn95,5Ag3,8Cu0,7...

Re: QMX 60-15M kit order?
Hello Brien Powdered iron cores, nor ferrite ;-)? ? But everything is here now, no more problems, and we are preparing all the pending orders that were waiting on T37-6 or sticky feet. I updated the status page with this information.? There were 162 pending orders, we started catching up on them yesterday, and it will take a few days to clear the backlog.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Thu, Dec 26, 2024 at 5:56?AM Brien - KE7WB via <ke7wb=[email protected]> wrote:

Perhaps, but the two low band QDX's are doing fine with about the same number of hours and using the same antenna, etc. on 20 meters. |
As far as I know the first group buy is closed, participants paid their shares and are in the process of getting their kits.
?
The best way is to contact Cal (AD8Q) and Stan (KC7XE) by email.
?
You can find more group buy discussion (although it is quite outdated at this point) in this thread:

The fact thast you've now smoked two radios I would be very concerned about some fault with either the power supply, antenna, swr meter and/or dummy load. |
QDX Died shortly after arrival
#qdx
The 12v QDX HB that I ordered pre-built arrived Monday the 23rd of Dec. It is replacing the rev. 5 QDX HB that I bought pre-built in May '23 that has developed an aversion to heat - it stops TX after it gets warm. I think a SMT component is lifting as nothing seems to be an issue otherwise (Jeff Moore looked at it three times).
?
I tested the new one into the dummy load at 11 volts (how I operate these) and confirmed nice power out on all bands with 3.7 watts on 10 meters via "tune". On FT8 into an antenna at an SWR of 1:1.2 I was seeing 3.4 watts out. It worked fine for two hours the first afternoon and another hour the next afternoon when I noticed the power out rose to 4.0 then dropped to 3.8 on one CQ call.
On the next cycle the magic smoke escaped, JTDX offered to reconfigure because the radio had disappeared, and I saw that the QDX was drawing the max of 1 amp at 5 volts from the Drok buck/booster supply.?
?
I cannot see what burned nor where the smoke came from. I can smell the smoke stronger on the top of the board than on the bottom this morning. I tested the Drok with the QDX LB and it is working fine. I then connected the smoked QDX HB to the Drok and it again hit the amps limit of 1 and volts dropped to 5.?
?
I am rather disappointed in the three hour life of this new QDX and don't know where to start looking for the short/fault - source of the smoke. I submitted a support ticket today, but hope no one is reading them now! |
