Re: What is on your work bench ?

Dust, dust and more dust.
But soon that will have to be removed to allow the QDX its day.

Re: QDX: Anyone else having a problem with image rejection? #qdx

Hi all

There are two different things that generate unwanted signals on RECEIVE (not on transmit):

1) Unwanted sideband cancellation. Where the amplitude of the I and Q channels mismatch, or the phase shift is not 90-degrees, the unwanted sideband (normally lower sideband) is imperfectly canceled. This is shown?on the AF sweep function in the QDX terminal applications.?

2) Image: QDX digitally implements a SUPERHETERODYNE receiver having a 12kHz IF, and then a phasing-method direct conversion receiver to get SSB audio. There will be an image response at 12kHz the other side of IF, i.e. 24kHz from the reception frequency. There is no tool in the QDX terminal applications to view the image rejection.?

Both of these imperfections can be quite substantially reduced by software in the QDX SDR. I did not implement any kind of corrections to compensate for these errors. My reasons for not implementing these were:
  • It was evident to me that the imperfections were at a quite low level and the receiver works extremely well.
  • I was already 18 months behind on my anticipated release date for what had been supposed to have been a "small project" (famous last words). The boards and parts had been sitting here in a box patiently waiting, all that time.?
  • I did not want to risk any funky software to make these corrections, at that early stage
  • QDX has an easy firmware update procedure, so I knew that later, I can code these compensations and I can issue a firmware update.?
I'll certainly implement the corrections, when I have some time. It's the same code on QSX too and I did it, I just hadn't fully tested it and it's tricky.?

Thank you for the reply, very helpful!

I can't duplicate it, but the image problem seemed *possibly* intermittent once today.

Right now the QDX is happily running solar-powered remote to the shack, I'll do more testing later.

Re: What is on your work bench ?

I got a QDX in the first round, so didn't go for a second one. I'm working toward building a PSSST-20, myself. There's a groups.io group by the same name if anybody is interested. I also designed and had made some prototyping boards that you all might enjoy:

Details here at my site, including a YT video and a link to download the Gerbers or order some from PCBWay.?

But, I need parts before I get the PSSST-20 built. I also have one of PH2LB's crystal tester kits that I just finished last night and am learning to how use for the sake of building my own crystal filter. Fun stsuff!

Re: YouTuber who wants to review one but impossible to get

I also have no problem with people buying more than one, if they are either going to be built right away for the benefit of other hams or used in a group building project. Hans is not yet offering assembled QDX, so the only way that somebody who is incapable of building the kit can get one is to get a fellow ham to do the building.

I DO object to people buying the scarce kits to put on the shelf unbuilt or to flip on eBay. I haven't heard any credible reports of people doing those things.

They did have a shot, same as everyone else who tried to order. Sooner or later the kits run out, and no matter how many hams got one, or more, the guy who didn't will cry foul, and scream "unfair!". It's just how the world works, and any attempt to rig the system will fail to provide "fairness". If you limit the number of kits people will just go right back in and try ordering using another name, etc. I'd rather the multiple orders get in and out of the way and not clog up the server for other people. These days I suspect that expressing pity for someone would be considered a bad thing becasue it could be seen as condescending or patronizing. But when someone actually self identifies to a description like this one it's just sad ... patheitic even.

In this situation help can't be offered so the best thing to do is to figuratively look away and walk on past (i.e. as noted ignore their posts).

I couldn't care less if someone ordered 20 kits, they took the same chance as everyone else in the ordering process.

Hans went out of his way to make it as "fair" as humanly possible by announcing the sale date and time well in advance. The only way to make this unfair is to give certain people an advantage over others. That would not be "fair".

Sorry, I usually don't get in on these discussions, but I'm a bit fed up with complaints of unfairness everywhere I look lately. If you'll all excuse me now I'm going out to buy a lottery ticket. If I don't win I guess I'll just file a complaint about fairness with the lottery commission.

Well, as Hans pointed out, it doesn¡¯t make a lot of sense to have multiple QDXs since it¡¯s a multi-band rig.? I¡¯m hoping those who ordered multiples were simply ordering for others or perhaps gifting them.? I¡¯m pretty sure I can find room to put my QDX in my camping go-kit; just need to remember to grab it before I go!

Agreed though it would mean more work on what sounds like an already overworked small company.? I don't understand buying multiples when so many want a unit and there are so few available.? Reminds me of the toilet paper shortage last year and the images of people with shipping carts stacked high as others were struggling to find a single package.

They might have had a shot if everyone had limited themselves to one

They did have a shot, same as everyone else who tried to order. Sooner or later the kits run out, and no matter how many hams got one, or more, the guy who didn't will cry foul, and scream "unfair!". It's just how the world works, and any attempt to rig the system will fail to provide "fairness". If you limit the number of kits people will just go right back in and try ordering using another name, etc. I'd rather the multiple orders get in and out of the way and not clog up the server for other people. But that's just my not so humble opinion.

I didn't see it as a knock against Hans. He has gone over and above. My gripe is with those who purchased more than one for whatever reason. When a supply is so limited it just comes across as a bit greedy.? I was able to get one but so many who took the time to come to the site at the opening of the sale didn't. They might have had a shot if everyone had limited themselves to one.

I've been moving my shack from an upstairs bedroom to a downstairs one and building new benches. I just finished putting together a Mercury IIIs amp and have several couplers to build. Rewired the new shack for dedicated 120 and 240 service. Added weather-head routing with surge protections into the shack. Six or eight other SDR radios on the shelf including several QRPLabs kits.
