These days I suspect that expressing pity for someone would be considered a bad thing becasue it could be seen as condescending or patronizing. But when someone actually self identifies to a description like this one it's just sad ... patheitic even.
In this situation help can't be offered so the best thing to do is to figuratively look away and walk on past (i.e. as noted ignore their posts).
