Re: QMX Won¡¯t turn on
My computer skills aren't stellar so I apologize if this should be a new topic rather than a reply.? I am having difficulty understanding how to connect an external electret condenser mic to my completed QMX+.? I understand that the ring in the jack is connected to both the mic input and through a 2.2K resistor to a 3.3V supply.? It would seem to be as simple as connecting both the mic connection from the mic and the connection to supply power to the mic to the ring on the plug.? My first attempt was with no connection to the supply power to the mic and I found that if I shouted loudly enough I could indeed generate a small RF output, I even made a very difficult contact!? Arranging to connect the power connection to the ring I find that the PTT is engaged when that connection is made.? The mic I am working with is from my junk bin and I am almost certain that it at one time functioned as expected with a TS-940, 850, or 950 radio.? I am preparing to connect an external DC supply to the mic, no power to the QMX+ other than back through the mic itself.? Alternative is to purchase another mic of known specifications bit I would have the same wiring question.? Any direction from those more knowledgeable would be greatly appreciated!? A wonderful project and I am expecting the final card played will yield a wonderful radio.? Thanks to Hans and all those participating! |
#QMX - dim backlight remains when backlight turned off
#qmx
I had posted about this in the past regarding my rev4 QMX (/g/QRPLabs/message/127055) but I still haven't been able to resolve this issue.
?
Essentially, when the backlight is turned OFF in the display settings, the LED is still dimly lit. Could this be a failed BSS123 transistor (Q301)? The radio otherwise functions normally. I'm not sure what else would cause this, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Rev 1 vs. Rev 3 QMX Kit?
Hi Mike, all The SMPS step issue wasn't quite the same thing as the capacitor voltage ratings issue.? The tantalum capacitors used were rated 6.3V. they shouldn't ever see more than 5V. Indeed there is a 5.6V zener with a sharp cut-off as final protection, so I'd be very surprised if the capacitor could ever see 6.3V and exceed its rating.? However, there were occasional field reports of the capacitor burning out (quite literally, tantalum capacitors catch fire). And not in any known circumstances such as sudden input voltage steps. So it seems that even though the capacitor's 6.3V voltage rating probably wasn't technically exceeded, it's still too close for comfort and perhaps some devices are a little lower spec than others.? I subsequently changed to 10V rated tantalum capacitors which are available in the same size package and have not heard of burning capacitors since this change.? Nevertheless if you have a Rev 1 board I wouldn't rush to change the capacitors, as I recall the fires were rare.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Mon, May 12, 2025, 17:38 Mike KK7ER via <groupio=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: QMX+ WSPR
Thanks Geoff I'm aware of this issue which needs investigation and resolution, thanks. It seems I shouldn't have much trouble reproducing it myself. It has been my priority for a very long time to get the SSB firmware done. Now once I get back from Dayton Hamvention I'll have more time.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Mon, May 12, 2025, 18:49 Roelof Bakker via <roelofndb=[email protected]> wrote:

You¡¯re right, of course I meant G not S. Brain fart ? Good catch! Looking closely, it seems the enamel has melted on L101 and measuring with DMM shows 0.0 Ohm compared to 2.0 ohm on L102. (Verified by measuring L101 on an unbuilt board = 2.0 ohm) But how do you replace it? It tested using hot air station without any success, and there is absolutely no exposed solder islands so the soldering iron is of no use. Ideas? Starting to think I would be better off moving all the coils over to the spare board instead ? Regards Jonas 11 maj 2025 kl. 23:52 skrev DH8WN via groups.io <DH8WN@...>: Please check L101. Maybe the enamel is burned (high current in the past) and the winding is shorted. This could be the reason. |

Thanks to W1NC!
As I described in this post, what started as a harmless part exchange resulted in a dead QMX, so I sent it off to Jeff, W1NC.? He not only fixed it, he sent me a detailed explanation of what he had to do to repair the radio.? Total turn around was 11 days door-to-door.? I spent several minutes looking over the PCB before I could positively recognize it as the one I had sent him - he cleaned up all of my poor soldering and even removed all of the scorch marks!
I would definitely recommend contacting Jeff if you get to a point where you can't fix it yourself.? While damaging my radio wasn't a good thing, working with Jeff was definitely a great experience!

humbly thinking that this statement is wrong. Wrong in so many ways... Perhaps I did not include enough detail?
I'm referring to C106 and C107.
The parts supplied in Rev 1 were rated at 6V.
The parts supplied in later revs were rated at 10V.

Re: QMX+ WSPR
So, replying to my own message. I ran beacon mode this morning and it failed within 2 hours when spots ceased.. Power cycling the rig resolved the problem for a while until it failed again around 2 hours later. This time, I did see JD38 reported befor all spots ceased again.
I videoed the screen for a both good transmission and a corrupt (no reports received) transmission. There were differences in the first 10 characters between the good and bad transmission (There may well be further differences. It's tedious to work through the whole 160 characters, but I will do so if it helps?).?
The transmitted characters I recorded were as follows (first column is the corrupt and the second is valid):
?
3 1 *
0 0
2 2
0 0
2 2
2 0 *
2 2
1 1
2 2
2 2
?
Which seems to confirm that the problem lies with the QMX+/QLG3 combination.
Hans, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you solve this.

Re: QMX+ WSPR
Hi all The beacon function in QMX is very old, it originated in the Ultimate WSPR kit, which became Ultimate2, then Ultimate3, then (10 years ago) the Ultimate3S (a.k.a. U3S) see . This is how QRP Labs started. Later, the functionality was ported into the QCX, and eventually QMX.? I suspect the problems are in my QMX firmware, not WSJT-X or WSPRnet.org or anything else.? The issue with WSPR locator squares suddenly changing is on my list to investigate, and one of the developments?I want to make for QMX is a complete virtual U3S which can do everything U3S can do, and more. Band-hopping included, Ken. 73 Hans G0UPL On Mon, May 12, 2025 at 10:35?AM geoff98uk via <g3wpd=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: QMX+ WSPR
I have had the same issue, with a QMX+ and QLG3 combination and have stopped using beacon mode because of it. The setup will typically behave well for a couple of hours before I start to see random JD38 spots and a much reduced total number of spots. A restart of the QMX+ immediately restores normal behaviour, which suggests to me that the problem lies with the transmission and not with the decoding/reporting system.
I didn't realise I could video the screen to record the encoded WSPR transmission - I will try and do that and report back on the results.
I am also in IO91. Is the problem unique to this square I wonder, or if others have experienced it?
