Re: New Project?

How about just investing in a good old Boat Anchor radio. eBay would be a good place to start.

Hi Everyone.? Having just successfully built a QDX, with a QMX "on the way", I have a question for Hans and the Group.? The QRP-Labs radios are all fantastic, and Hans is a certified genius.? I would love to build a transceiver, similar to the QMX, but instead of EMP susceptible integrated circuits, step back in time a bit and use vacuum tubes (valves).? Re: QMX+ Built and working.... Then Not working!

I highly recommend the QRPoMeter (kit) .? It has a 3dB pad to protect your radio while tuning and showing accurate SWR.? It also has a good dummy load and reads out accurate power.? The display is great.? Only negative is it cannot read power into the antenna, just in to its dummy load.

Re: New Project?

Buy yourself a WWII vintage valve transceiver set.? ?Three strong men can probably get it all up the stairs but the floor may give way.? ??

Remove and dump the contents of the chassis and replace them with a QMX+ and a UV-K5 both wrapped in tinfoil and the same for a couple of large battery packs.? Add a bottle of your favourite sprits and close up the cases ensuring an EMP proof seal ...? ?
You now have the best of both worlds?

FS QLG3 New In Box, Never Opened

Folks, a few weeks ago I was assembling my QMX+ and thought I had messed up my QLG3 module, so I ordered a replacement. Shortly after placing the order I realized that I could repair the damage done. Unfortunately it was too late - the replacement had shipped. It is sitting here on my desk, in the un-opened box it came it. A new one from the factory will run you $21 plus shipping (either $25 or $15).
?
I will sell this one for $26 shipped anywhere in the USA. Please contact me off-list if you are interested. PayPal family & friends preferred.

Re: Integration of QMX with QLG2 GPS Receiver module kit ??

Hello Kevin

QLG2 could be wired to a 3.5mm plug and connected externally to the QMX+ Paddle port in the same way you'd use it on QMX.?

If you want to install QLG2 inside then assuming you'll take care of the mechanical aspects, the wiring would also not be difficult; you'd want to re-configure the jumpers on the QLG2 (according to its manual) to provide 3.3V logic level outputs; then just wire 1pps and TXD to the corresponding pins of the 1x5-pin header that the QLG3 plugs into. You could also power QLG2 from the 5V rail, or remove it's regulator and power it from the?3.3V bus.?

I have a QLG2 lying around. Since I acquired the QMX+ from you at Hamvention, I thought about using it Inside the QMX+ as it has a lot of unused space.

I realize the QLG3 is made for the QMX+ but thought maybe the QLG2 could still be used. I also realize they are different units so the pinouts would be different.

But are they Too Different to be used in this situation? Just a wiring fix and maybe a case modification?

Re: Qdx via iPhone

Hi Onur,
?
when I open vox, the phone's microphone will be used, right?
The RX/TX audio streams between iPhone and QDX/QMX are always purely digital via the virtual USB sound card that's implemented by QDX/QMX firmware. So you won't be able to hear anything. The VOX here is about TX and it's on QDX. What it means is that with VOX enabled, if QDX detects the USB host (iPhone or PC) is sending an audio stream to it, it will start to generate FSK from the audio stream. I'd suggest review the "Design" section in the QDX assembly manual.
?
As for the troubleshooting, I'd suggest using your PC as a mock iPhone to test your QDX. Below are the steps.
  1. Base a baseline, make sure your QDX is fully working with your PC.
  2. Functionality wise, a PC is no different from an iPhone, with the exception of CAT control. In your WSJT-x configuration, disable CAT for the radio completely. Without CAT control for band/freq and PTT, your WSJT-x behaves exactly like iFTx on your iPhone. Now the only things you still have is the digital audio input and output streams via the virtual USB sound card.
  3. Launch the terminal application to configure the default frequency and turn on the VOX.
  4. Success check: after power cycle your QDX and restart WSJT-x, you should still be able to receive and transmit FT8 just like before. You won't be able to change band/freq though because CAT is disabled.
  5. If step 4 is successful, you can be sure that
    • You QDX is working fine on both RX and TX
    • It has also been configured for iFTx properly
    • The USB cable is now known good
  6. Connect a USB keyboard to your iPhone with that Lightning to USB Camera adapter. You should be able to use the USB keyboard to type on iPhone now. If not, that adapter is not working properly.
  7. Now connect your QDX using the known good USB cable from steps 1 to 4 and launch iFTx. I don't really see how things can fail at this point, if iPhone is unmuted and the output is set to max.
will it be enough to make a cable between the OTG cable and the Qmx?
I don't quite get what does this "make a cable" mean. It should be a normal USB-A to USB-C cable. There's no analog audio involved, so there's no need for any special cable. Good luck with your QDX and QMX!

Diagnostics
?
I had an issue with the 2 buttons as I soldered them on the wrong side of the board and had to remove them. I later checked R 301 and 302 and the switches seemed to work.? I have not installed a paddle yet.

Michigan QRP Club Zoom Chat Report 7/18/24

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

We had 10 folks attend the Michigan QRP Club Zoom meeting last week where the topic was keys.

Pete WK8S
Ed AB8DF
Ernie W3ETE
Stuart M0SGV
Dave N8SBE
Muhsin TA1MHS
Rick K8MBA
Jeremy KD8ZZJ
TBD TA1HMG
Casey KC9IH

Keys
Pete showed pictures of his keys. Not good with straight keys any more. Muhsin showed his first key and the history behind it. Dave¡¯s first QRP was a bulldog built with paper clips. He also has Bencher paddles, Kent paddles, and Bengalis. Ed showed his straight keys and paddles which included J38, Bencher straight key, NORCAL paddle kit and Kent paddles. He uses a Bengali Simplex as his daily paddle. Stuart showed a bunch of keys. He has way too many. Rick is a single lever guy. He talked about his single lever paddles. There sure are many different kinds of keys and keying style. Lots of interesting stories. Favorite QRP rig will be the topic for next week 25 July. Stuart sent in a poem about Morse code:

If you can keep your head when all the buntings
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can read through abnospheric crashes .
With signals fading down to near "R-2";?
If you can send and not get tired sending
And when you stumble, make a neat erase;
If you can read without the old complaining:
"His bloody Morse is just a damn disgrace";?
If you don't fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds worth of IMI's
And if you always use correct procedure,
But still don't talk too much, nor look too wise;?
If you can live with buntings, jeeps and stokers
And tolerate both Pusser's rum and stew;
And copy when reliefs are in their hammocks
And never miss a group with every spew;?
If officers and Chiefs and drunken Yeomen
Can heckle you and still your nerves won't fray;
Then you're a damn good sparker, son - you've made it!
You're earning every penny of your pay. . . .?

At the end of the meeting we did a quick survey with those in attendance.
Who uses what kind? Survey below:
Straight -?
Paddles Iambic - 4
Paddles single lever - 1
Side Swiper -?
Cootie -?
Single lever -?
Other - 1

Please join us Thursday (and every Thursday) at 4PM Eastern for the Michigan QRP Club weekly QRP Chat where the main topics will be QRP and other ham interests. It's fun, it's easy, and it's free. You only need a computer, a smart phone, or a tablet that can connect to the Internet. OR if you can't be close to any of those you can join by audio with any standard phone. Just follow the directions below. No software needs be loaded or installed. Anyone can join and non members are welcome. Details are here:

Re: Qdx via iPhone

Thanks Zhenxing.
?
I did the installation exactly as you described, but unfortunately no activity was seen on the screen. I can try again by changing the cable and adapter, but I need to be sure of this; when I open vox, the phone's microphone will be used, right? If so, shouldn't it be a quiet environment?
?
From what you described, working with mono band and sound would not be something I would prefer.
?
I have a Qmx, I haven't soldered it yet. If I'm going to use my Qmx, will it be enough to make a cable between the OTG cable and the Qmx?

Re: Qdx via iPhone

Thank you Gary.?
I used it at home for a long time with a pi 3 and then a pi 4, as you described. I wanted to try my luck because it was portable and I didn't have to deal with too many devices.
