Re: Should I be disappointed?

No, not really. I expected 5 watts EVERY band and have fiddled and diddled with windings and spacing and chanting in strange languages to get what you got which was not that much different than anyone else.
?
The BIG difference for the QMX+ for me was rewinding T501 with the Really Weird Twisted Sister as I should have in the first place.
?
You got a good unit for 25 to 50 extra bucks! I love? building this stuff but the people who build them for Hans do a pretty good job for not much moolah.

Oh, no. 3.3 W compared to 5 W means only 0.3 s steps lower.

Re: Should I be disappointed?

I guess I should have had 3 watt expectations when I ordered. C'est la vie.

Hello Rico,
?
you may follow .
Without success screen shots from Terminal QMX QMX_plus Terminal - Hardware tests are helpful. The results may give us a glue where to search for problems.

Yes, lots of problems like yours have been solved.

You may have to wait a while, maybe the diagnosis experts here are taking a break for Christmas..
(You probably will find someone with the same or similar problem to give clues if you look back at earlier posts.)

Re: QMX short over antenna jack #build #qmx #solder

Rico,
All good suggestions for you in these replies. Don't look at this as an expensive mistake; it is a great learning opportunity to learn troubleshooting. Another approach is to get in touch with someone from your local ham club or group. I am sure someone there can give you assistance. In any case, it is very likely that your problems are solvable.?

Good luck and have fun learning!

And Merry Christmas!

Re: Should I be disappointed?

Those look pretty good. Remember this is a QRP rig. The slightly lower output from what you expected will only make a difference in your mind, and will likely help preserve your finals.

List of features:

3-5W output at 12V supply (can be built for 3-5W at 9V supply)

Did I see any figure less than 3 Watts?

I'd say you got what is says on the box.
In any case there is less than 2dB between 3 and 5 Watts.

Re: Ultimate 3S overvoltage damage!

I fitted all three to mine John. My U3 isn’t currently on the air due to a rearrangement of my antennas, though previously it has provided years of continuous service, it is just coming up to 11 years old. I remember that the GPS chip required some careful soldering, as this was before Hans developed a dedicated GPS module. 73 Nick G0OQK

Re: QMX short over antenna jack #build #qmx #solder

Have you got a multimeter Rico?
A visual inspection of the solder joint is not sufficient in this instance if you are having problems. Set your multimeter to the resistance mode and check for low impedance across each coil. ?The measurement should be equal to that of the meter leads shorted together. My preference is to check on the coil side of the circuit board on the plated through holes where the coil wires pass through. This avoids the possibility of touching a bare wire end, that has not been properly soldered. ?Checking carefully means actually taking measurements in my opinion. Due to the large areas of ground plane acting as a heatsink, more care and attention than on other boards you may have soldered is required. 73 Nick G0OQK

Re: QMX Mid Band Rx issue

Thanks, Stan,
?
Using the refrigerator, I have confirmed that it is heat-dependent.? At 40 degrees, it took ~10 minutes to settle down. At 70 degrees, about 20 seconds.
?
I wonder if there is a batch of QMX's with improperly soldered PCM1804's ? The thought of replacing the 1804 seems daunting, but I may look into a low-cost rework station.

Re: QMX short over antenna jack #build #qmx #solder

Tnx Todd,
?
I’ve checked the soldering after I fitted the coils very carefully because I knew those are delicate.?

Interesting is the fact that the sound coming out of the little guy doesn’t change at all whether there is an antenna connected or not.?
But since I’m not good in electronics I’ve got no idea what to look at.?

There are modifications for encoder mechanic you can do to get more slide filling.

Other rotary encoder for QMX and QMX+?

Hello
?
I am using a QMX and QMX+, but do not like the encoder to tuning the band up and down.
Every step is a grid.
Is there a replacement possible for the rotary encoder to tune the bands like on a K1/K2?
