Flux-cored solder?shall be either composition SN60 or SN63 containing flux?types R or RMA, or equivalent. For all soldering applications where adequate?subsequent cleaning?is not practical, only solder containing flux type R shall be used. Solid solders (no flux) for use in?solder pots shall?be of the same composition.? 2. High Temperature. For soldering operations where connections are to be?subsequently reheated, the use?of high temperature solder alloy is permitted (e.g., SN96AG04A). The type of high temperature solder and the connection requiring the high temperature solder?shall be specified on the engineering?documentation.? 3. Variations. The use of any other solder compositions and forms (including type RA?flux) shall require the approval of?the procuring NASA Center prior to use.? 6.12 Liquid Flux 1. Types and Usage. All fluxes used for tinning and soldering operations shall?conform?to ANSI/J-STD-004. Process documentation shall describe the types of fluxes, where each is?used, and the necessary?precautions. 2. Rosin Flux. Flux types R, RMA, or equivalent shall be used. For all fluxing?applications where adequate subsequent?cleaning is not practical, only type R, or equivalent, flux?shall be used. Liquid flux used with flux-cored solder shall be chemically?compatible with the?solder core flux and with the materials with which it will come in contact. 3. Variations. The use of any other flux?compositions and forms (including type RA?flux) shall require the approval of the procuring NASA Center prior to use. The request for?approval shall include detailed flux removal, cleaning processes, monitoring requirements, and?cleanliness test methods. 6.13 Solvents and Cleaners?1. The solvents or aqueous cleaners used to remove grease, oil, dirt, flux, or other debris,?shall be selected?for their ability to remove both ionic and nonionic contamination. The solvents or?cleaners used shall not degrade the materials or parts?being cleaned. A list of approved solvents?and cleaners is provided in Table 6-1. Mixtures of the approved solvents may be used. Solvent?containers shall be properly labeled. Refer to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for proper?handling of solvents or cleaners. |

It may seem like a lot of money but a stereozoom binocular microscope with boom stand, 10X eyepieces and an LED ring illuminator will almost give you superpowers compared to an eye loupe or headworn magnifier.
I do microelectronic design, assembly and rework of RF/microwave modules (among other services) for my clients and that is what I have found works for me.? 8x total is about right for most work.
I bought this one 5 years ago, it has served me well and it will outlast me: ?
Definitely stay away from monocular USB microscope/displays, their monocular vision and low resolution and dynamic range (both color gamut and brightness) make them poor choices, at least all of the ones I have tried.?
You really need good depth perception and !BRIGHT! shadowless illumination for soldering, etc. tasks.??

Hi there,
Does your rig put out full power? And in the terminal diagnostics is it reporting as both transmitting near enough to 5w with a low (near 1:1 ) SWR into a dummy load? Can you run through some diagnostic screens and post screenshots here please? Focussing on LPF sweeps for a few bands, as well as BPF sweeps too. Also the Test I/Q. And Image sweep would be useful too. Run these tests into a 50 ohm dummy load if you've got one, and if you don't it won't be putting out enough to cook a couple of 100 ohm 1/4w in parallel at those tests.?

Yes, definitely good quality rosin core solder. I do keep a small bottle of liquid rosin flux because I add it to the desoldering braid when needed. I have an old Radio Shack 50 watt adjustable soldering iron. I run it at the full 50 watts on these kits. I would look for something like it to replace it when I need a new one. Another indispensable item, at least for me, is a binocular magnifying headset.??

You don't need a boatload of equipment. Also note focus is through hole construction. Don't need paste, just quality solder. I see plenty of nice enough gear out there. Definitely temperature regulation. Some swear by Hakko but others may be good enough. You may want a stand magnifier. All this should easily be in your budget.?

Oh I built my K2 with a plain soldering iron, but I suggest a modest investment in a soldering station.?

Also the CW audio sample sounded saturated like excessive gain/volume
was being used.? The other was the SSB example had significant

Short answer: No, you should definitely NOT be disappointed.?
20,17,&15 meters share an LPF. Playing with the turn spacing on those toroids will let you peak a different band. So you can get more out on 20 m, but probably at the expense of 17, and/or 15 m.?
That said, I routinely do POTA and SOTA activationswith 2.5 W ( QMX mid band built for 12V, powered with 9V.) I usually have a pile up on CW. When I run it at 12V (5W), I can't tell any difference in QSO rates or reports.?

Soldering Station Recommendations
Retiring after decades in the software world, I'm now returning to the hobby of my youth, ham radio. I purchased the QMX+ kit and look forward to building it. ?With the great documentation from QRP Labs, YouTube videos, and support on this group, I expect that I will have few if any problems. ?(Fingers crossed!) I need to update my soldering station and I see a lot of relatively inexpensive equipment on Amazon. ?I'm willing to spend a few hundred USD, but not much more than that at this stage. ?Looking for magnifier/lamp, work holders, iron (brand, watts, temp control?), fume hood, etc.? If anyone has any passionate recommendations, or even just solid recommendations, I'm all ears. BTW: ?I see that lead-based solder is still available for purchase (I thought it was banned years ago). ?What kind of solder should I use on the QMX+ kit? ?What thickness? ?Rosin core or not?? (The QRP Labs build instructions don't mention soldering materials.) Also: ?Separate rosin paste dispenser/brush? ?99% Isopropyl Alcohol? ?Anything else? I have a reasonable amount of soldering experience, but that was long before the RoHS era. ?I want to build the QMX+ boards the right way with the right materials and equipment. why are you distracted? 5w or 3w or only 1w... qrp is qrp... if you actually have 3.3w or in maximum 5w .... where is the difference and problem??
keep calm and just enjoy your qrp- rig... otherwise you have to buy a icom-yaesu-kenwood... may an additional pa too ... think about?
