QLG2 GPS receiver - chip set instructions etc
#qlg2
I have ordered a QLG2 module and am reading the data provided by Hans thoroughly to understand how it works and how it is set up (something that it seems a lot of people do not bother to do with? QRP Labs kits!).
One thing which I was struggling with was the instruction data for the GK9501 chip set used in the GPS receiver.? I managed to make some sense using "Google Translate", but it was hard going. With further help from Google, I found an English language version of the document here:? I think the compilers of that document probably themselves used "Google Translate", as the English is a little quaint in places.? (For example, use of the word "star" instead of "satellite".) However, it may be of some use to others trying to get the receiver to do exactly what they want it to! -- Peter Lee G3SPL |

Re: QCX+ T1 Holes Plugged
I purchased a SMD rework device from Amazon after it was recently?reviewed in QST. The focused hot air blast cleared several holes for me with no damage to nearby SMD components. I believe it was less than $40. ?

Re: QCX+ T1 Holes Plugged
I second David Wilcox's suggestion.? I am updating my QCX+ from 20m to 40m and solder wick dipped in flux just wicks all the solder right out of the hole.? After that you can just pull the wire out.
When I replaced the relays in my son's uBitX I tried ?with a solder sucker.? That stuff is also amazing.? After wiping with alcohol, the board is like new. 73, Mike KK7ER |

see if there is a stainless steel needle that is the right size for the hole you want to openThis is a safer method than using a drill bit, which is likely to damage plated-thru holes.? IIRC embroidery needles have a blunt-ish point which works better for this; a too-sharp point can damage the board plating.? Using a melting point-lowering alloy like Chip-Quik will allow lower solder tool heat settings which is easier on the PC board.? So does preheating the board on a hot plate. 73, Don N2VGU |
QCX+ Repair, 700 Hz tone
I just repaired a QCX+ for a friend. It had a loud 700 Hz tone on start up, among other problems. Found another reason for the 700 Hz tone: Mis-wired T1. Took it out and rewound it and all was well. Fortunately, no damage from this. Not sure all the problems, but the large winding was wired in backwards and I believe at least one of the small windings had the wrong sense.
Just an FYI for troubleshooting -- 73, Dan? NM3A |

Re: QCX+ T1 Holes Plugged
Rob,
?I have a couple of stand alone manual solder suckers and they work pretty well. However, it's difficult to line up the sucker and the iron on either side of a board. And if they're on the same side, the vacuum is not nearly as effective. You really need 3 hands and eyes on both sides of the board to do it well. That's where the heated sucker shines: one hand, one side of the board, and one set of eyes.? -- 73, Dan? NM3A |
Re: Balloon over Canada
Some stories claim that you can 'steer' a balloon by changing altitude (without going in to sufficient detail about how that might be done), while not actually claiming that _this_ balloon has those capabilities.

Occam's Razor says it was for local Chinese use and got out of hand, drifted away, or they are poking the US to see how we'll respond. Note that the 'air traffic control flight hold' wasn't because of the balloon, it was because they were scrambling fighters to go check it out. Wonder what the news cycle is trying to distract us from this time? 73, Willie N1JBJ On Feb 3, 2023, at 9:29 AM, VE3KCL <airdry@...> wrote: |
Re: Balloon over Canada
A balloon is not a great platform for spying... it does not go where you want it to go, and is at the mercy of the jet stream. This one is visible from the ground so not very stealthy.? And if they could roll down the window of the fighter jet, a few shots from a bb gun would get it to leak slowly and gently bring it down gently so the government could examine the secret spy equipment.??
The media loves these stories. Dave VE3KCL |
