TARC Club

theTARCinc has a meeting recess from the December Social Meeting
until the Management Meeting on Tuesday 7th February.

There will be other activities happening though, including the
January Ann Renton Memorial Ladies Net, the Sunday Morning WIANews
2m Net, the Sunday evening North Queensland Net on 3605.4kHz and 2m,
the Tech on the Air Net on the last Tuesday of the month plus the
Australia Day Long Week Family Radio Camp amongst other things

keep your eyes glued to this dispatch and your ear glued to the
news transmissions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well that was good to hear from the Townsville Amateur Radio Club and
Gavin, VK4ZZ.
Now, to all the clubs and particularly those that seem to rely on Gavin to
get their
happenings and news out to the folk in the North, how about you ALSO send
and record
your activities for QNEWS? This is a standing invitation to get the news
out. Can
this be your special activity for 2023?

Well it has been a terrific week but hardly one that many along the coast and
especially Mackay would want repeated. The rainfall has been beyond most
±è±ð´Ç±è±ô±ð¡¯²õ
imagining and the disruptions to life in the north of the state has been
quite
severe with so many items not reaching the shelves of the grocery stores and
supermarkets. The irony is that, in my area, an upgraded and now flood
proof section
of the Bruce Highway has been officially opened during the last week as we
received
the tail end showers from the monsoon system which has caused the damage,
inland and
to the north.

I wonder how many people are geared up to enjoy the Australia Day contest,
an event
that is relatively new on the Australian amateur calendar? All being equal
and if
the gods of weather favour us, the conditions will remain good for all
participants.
For clubs it isn¡¯t too late to organise some activities to coincide with
the holiday
and the contest and for some clubs it will be the opportunity for a good
social
get-together to start the year off. For the parents, it has been a flurry of
activity making sure that everything is ready for the start of the school
year. Is
that the sound of normality I hear settling over the world again?

One change that happened during the last week was the reduction in the health
traffic light status, amber has gone to green. After claiming the 4th wave
of the
COVID pandemic has now receded and an estimated 80% of Queenslanders have
already
been infected by the virus, the Chief Medical Officer conceded that no one
knows
what the continuing progress of the changing virus will bring. Now I only
raise the
matter as when I see photos of club events, I am reminded of the high
membership of
elderly people. We oldies are classed as being in a vulnerable group and
so it
remains right that when we organise meetings and events, we should ensure
safety for
our club members. BBQ¡¯s are a good thing as fresh air is the most healthy
place to
inhabit and properly ventilated meeting rooms are next best.

From what I am seeing, Old Sol continues to ring the changes in the space
weather
with large flares causing radio blackouts and sun spots appearing and keeping
propagation a combination of good, bad and amazing. Here¡¯s hoping
Australia Day is
wide open for us.

And remember all you clubs north, south and over the face of Queensland we
are
waiting your reports here on QNEWS.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Howard Stephenson VK4HS has become a Silent Key, not only to the
Ham Radio world but to his wife, 4 kids AND 8 grandkids.

This on January Six 2023 at Yeppoon

Howard VK4HS had been a member of RADAR CLUB ROCKHAMPTON for many
years.

He had an interesting career working around the world for the World
Health Organisation. He lived in many countries and used Amateur Radio
to keep in contact with the rest of the world before he settled in a
beaut spot in Yeppoon.

Many spoke to him on air. However new comers did not meet him at
meetings as he was not able to drive at night.

Howard Stephenson's funeral service was Friday 13th 4pm in
Rockhampton

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

When we take the time to reflect on our history, it is quite amazing the
progress
that we have experienced during the last hundred years or so. We have seen
the rail
network expand and contract around the country. Years of work altering the
terrain
to allow the steel horses to negotiate country have been extended and a
lot have
been closed as people used the independence of the motor vehicle instead. The
telegraph and telephone followed, in part a similar trajectory of
development to the
railways and we are seeing the transfer of technology from wires to glass
fibres.

I remember, as a child, going to houses that had no electricity and people
were
fortunate if they sported some form of home lighting plant. These days
there ²¹°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù
many places where reticulated electricity isn¡¯t available and we are
living through
the transition from centralised generation to local and home sited plant
which
produce electricity and also store it for later use. Imagine if we still had
telephones with rotary handles to call the exchange operator and we were
using a
device which was permanently tethered.

As we come towards the remembrance day that we call Australia Day, it is
more than
just some pomp and ceremony, more than some party events and more than we
radio
amateurs changing our callsign prefix. Australia Day, regardless of the
trappings of
colonialism, marks the time when the settlers of this land brought their
individual
colonies into unity as States in our Commonwealth. Sadly the times were
not as
enlightened as we feel that we are and restrictions and ignorance of facts
meant the
early years were not the inclusive country in which we now live.

In the time that our federated country has existed, we have seen music
storage go
from sheet music through disks and CDs to streaming services. The
nostalgia has
brought a renaissance in vinyl, CD and the analogue enthusiasts are even
restoring
reel to reel machines. Information still comes on printed paper but
typically is
focused on digital storage. I am thankful that those silly small data CDs
are no
longer coming and manufacturers are reverting to printed user manuals.

There is so much in our history which directly touches the recreation we
pursue and
it is interesting to think about what used to be and what we have today.
Are the
services on which we depend more reliable than what they have replaced and
how can
day to day items be improved to give greater economy, for instance, by
lasting
longer in this disposable world. In the time that most of us will have
lived, we
have seen the demise of the consumer electronics service industry and the
loss of
skilled people because the trash and recycling are more convenient and
cheaper than
fixing things.

These are things that I feel we should ponder as January 26th approaches
and when we
need to dispose of the empty tinnies and bottles on the day after, do we
just bin
them or recycle them to live another day? A bit of reflection is sometimes
good for
the soul.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

The sounds of summer are upon us with chirps and cracks and croaks from
insects,
lizards and amphibians providing a chorus each night and some days, where
I live. On
the other hand, those of us who enjoy shortwave listening and operating
are having
to tolerate or move higher in the bands to escape the noise of summer storms
illuminating the display and distorting the signals on the lower bands. In
it¡¯s own
way, radio brings changes to our patterns of operating to remind us of
different
features of seasons and space weather. We spend our enjoyment of amateur
radio in
familiarising ourselves with the world around that the average user of
electronics
may never recognise.

The tropical monsoon is deluging large parts of the state in the north and
the
weather patterns have kept reminding many of us that we have been
experiencing a la
Nina event and more rainfall is prone to run off or increase the depth of the
flooding in areas that are looking to recover and return farming land to
useful
production.

At the other end of society, events in the wider world are starting to impact
production of items from pharmaceuticals to radios with Yaesu announcing the
cessation of production of two models of transceivers. Materials necessary
for the
self administration of some pharmaceuticals are not available and the
ubiquitous
silicon chips have been depleted to the stage of extinction with
manufacturers
announcing the end of production of some older variants. With disruption
of supply
of fuels and chemicals, this year may bring some interesting changes to
our life
styles as manufacturers attempt to keep plants operating and stocks of
component
items flowing though the production cycle.

Of course, the sunspot cycle, our eleven year tease, manages to sustain
the thrill
of shortwave DX with contacts being made on digital and analogue modes.
From what I
can see, 10m and 6m have been opening well and many reports have been made
of more
numerous use of the WARC bands also.

The VHF and UHF bands usually provide some surprising openings around this
time of
year and there appears to be interest in working SSB on two on a more
regular basis.
How about some of you experimenters giving us a heads up audio report on
QNews?

Most of us would be aware of the announcement during the past week, that
the ACMA
has approved an increase of 5% to the fees charged by the Australian Maritime
College. It has been pointed out that this is below the annual inflation
rate of
just over 6%. This means that getting items done by AMC under the Deed
with ACMA
will draw more of our precious play money out of circulation, this year.

And on that mildly sobering note I will wish everyone a Happy New Year,
once more
and sign with the usual, I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I
think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Happy Birthday to the Commonwealth of Australia which was born on this day in
1901.We have a holiday for the New Year and the birthday party in 3 and a
bit weeks¡¯
time. I trust we all enjoy the summer and the holidays and manage to
squeeze in some
operating and maybe contesting as well.

Just before the Christmas break, the WIA lodged its response to the Class
Licence
Discussion Paper with the ACMA. With lots of detail and questions as to the
protection our service can expect under the proposals, the reply will be
eagerly
awaited by the amateur community. As others have pointed out the Citizens
Band
Service has been operating for many years with effectively no regulation
under a
class licence. This came home to me during the past week when the continuing
breakthrough I was hearing on the UHF road channel, 40, turned out to be
some very
young children playing with what I can take were low powered hand helds.

Fortunately, at the time, there were only a couple of users who were
strong enough
to over-ride the interference thanks to the FM capture. In other
circumstances this
misuse of the channel could have had more serious consequences. We all
probably saw
that some of the flood effected areas south of Brisbane have set up safety
networks
using UHF CB and in the TV story that I saw, people were using handheld
radios with
all the limitations that they carry.

It is a shame that these items can be purchased as stocking fillers and
allowed to
be used as toys by unskilled children. Like it used to be thought proper
to teach
children their street address and telephone number, it now seems important
that they
be taught the basics of good radio procedures.
The fact that the ACMA hides behind the reasoning that they »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù have the
resources
to protect spectrum just perpetuates the misuse. Like lack of policing
dangerous
driving allows the unwary to place themselves and others in danger, the
failure to
regulate the airwaves has the potential to cause loss of life also.

If funding is the issue, then this is an issue for our Federal politicians to
address. As spectrum users and electors it is our right to take the matter
to them.

So whatever the festivities we have to ring in the New Year, isn¡¯t it
amazing how
much worth we place on an event that celebrates the arbitrary selection of
a day on
which to commence the calender which eventually gave us the variant that
we use
today. It is one great historical lottery that makes January 1 the
rollover day of
the calendar. Still it won¡¯t lessen the celebrations and beach rituals for
the
Aussie masses or even take anything from the Scots and Hogmanay. Whatever
we all
enjoy today, let it be safe so that we can enjoy it again in 12 months time.

Before I leave, a big shout out to the publicity folk in clubs:- We are
looking
forward to including your story in QNews throughout 2023.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

I trust that all our wishes for this Christmas are coming true and the
feelings of
happiness and togetherness that we seek are around us all. As behoves the
occasion,
Merry Christmas from the QNews team.

After clearing the wrapping paper and spreading out the nibbles and
drinks, the
traditions of the season will fill the space for so many of us. For many
this year
will be filled with memories of those people who are no longer with us and
for a
number they will spend today alone, not in the bosom of a supporting
family or
friendship group.

It is important for us to remember the basis of the holiday we are
celebrating and
the traditions of caring and sharing that the Christmas message carries.
It is
something that has transmuted into a largely secular happening with less
people
attending the church services and more taking significance from the
togetherness and
enjoyment of usually beautiful weather and the summer sun.
For me, acknowledging the religious message gives a poignancy which the
adopted
trappings of trees and Saint Nicholas are meant to enhance. The rush to
spend and
surround the gatherings with paper and tinsel as gifts are unwrapped is
just a
commercial manifestation of our society and not the be all and end all of
as a time
to think about those we care about and the world in which we live.

Christmas marks the beginnings of valiant sporting events with cricket and
sailing
high on the list and backyards and beaches ringing to the efforts of the
young and
not so young with everything from shuttlecocks to plastic bats.

In many towns and cities, special Christmas meals are given to people who
²¹°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù
well off enough to go to more up market venues or have the joy of family
and friends
amongst which to dine. For some the deep and abiding pangs of loneliness
will reside
in their hearts as they spend this time alone. It really is the right time
for us to
reach out and ask the question, ¡°R U OK?¡± with sincerity and hopefulness
that we can
make a difference for another person.

So as we move to enjoy the cold cuts of meat and the Christmas pudding, I
would hope
that we can extend the feelings of the Season throughout the coming year
and make
the sharing and friendship that we seek in amateur radio part of our lives
for 2023.

If you are listening and you feel the need, remember that there is someone
to share
your feelings with on Lifeline on telephone 13 11 14. The number again is
13 11 14.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

This is QNEWS.

News? What do we mean by news and how does it effect us all?

When we look at the meaning of the word, ¡°news¡± it tells us that we have
something
which is novel to us. It may mean it happened within hours for the daily
services or
it could be quite delayed if it is something published quarterly, for
instance. When
we think back to the time of the sailing ships, newspapers made a
circuitous journey
of some months to arrive at destinations where settlers passed the papers
around
after reading.

What I am seeing is that news is something which is relative to our
circumstances.
Similarly news may not always be retrospective but can be the announcement
of future
events in order that people can make provision to pay attention to a
coming event
when it arrives. Just as there has been a macabre fascination with the
death notices
on the rear pages of the daily press, news can be anything that is
important to the
reader, listener or viewer. The strip cartoon features or the form guides
can be as
important to some followers as the banner headline of the front page.

Now having set up what I think we accept as news, let me look at what it
means to us
radio amateurs. The internet provides many facilities to improve our hobby
from
space weather projections to clusters showing stations heard. We also get
the more
mundane but no less important material from our clubs and regulators on
web sites
and social media and between podcasts and video there is such a plethora
of material
that we can immerse ourselves in entertainment and educational material
without ever
turning on a rig. Still for the great unknown followers who wish to engage
with us
as interested students of our crafts there is one medium that has an
immediacy that
no other has. That is the collection of items that compose the news as a
compilation, as a paper a broadcast or a video stream.

Now here we are close to the Christmas holiday period and the slogan rings
in our
ears, ¡°¡¯tis the Season for giving¡±. This can be so much more that a pitch
to lighten
our pockets of superfluous money, it can also be the spirit of bringing
the news to
more people. Just think, if you are aware of a worthwhile project that is
being
developed, a club supporting and activity by providing funds or equipment, an
amateur who has a particular bent towards a part of the hobby; these are
all matters
we can describe as news.

Each week, the news is compiled and broadcast and we so often hear that
such and
such has happened or so and so has achieved this award but we »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù get it
on the
news. Now I accept that we have demands on time and resources but most of
us have a
pocket recorder, in the shape of our phone. The majority of us have 24/7
internet
access and we all have the opportunity to make this weekly news so much
more by
giving us your contributions.

I hope you and yours have the run up to Christmas that we all deserve.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well it must be near the time of goodwill to all men as the household has
received
its yearly card from the local politician with Christmas wishes and a
fridge magnet
calendar. I am ever so grateful for these reminders as it would be so easy to
overlook the admonitions to spend, spend and spend more money with the TV
news
seeking to set a goal for us to collectively reach. Well I »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù know
about you but
I do know one household that will be enjoying a simple celebration and
looking
forward to the visit of family.

The weather gurus have seemed to get the forecasts right lately and the
temperature
has hit levels which can be quite uncomfortable when combined with higher
than
normal humidity. The outside is quite unrelenting in establishing a high
level of
discomfort and I have seen a couple of incidences of sunburn which have
convinced me
to remain in long sleeves and pants. The health warnings are quite clear
and for
this collective of people, we need to ensure that proper precautions are
taken to
avoid not only sun stroke and sunburn but also dehydration. Although the
caution is
quite pertinent to our more senior, it applies to the very young equally.

There is the temptation to flaunt our ability to endure in spite of what
nature
dictates and with the large amount of the State under heatwave warnings in
the last
week and resumption of the hot weather in the coming week it is ever so
important,
whether we are enjoying holidays away or doing our usual things from home
that we
take the warnings seriously. I can identify with people being frustrated
because I
have mentioned before that I have a list of things to be done and most of
them are
jobs in the backyard. Maybe it will be kind to me and I can get on with
some that
are niggling at my conscience for lack of action, if the weather stays good.

During the week, I had the good fortune to meet up with another amateur in
the local
area. I was following up on an item I saw advertised and which will
improve the
station when it is installed. It was great to sit in the shade with a nice
breeze
coming from across the bay and have a good old fashioned eyeball ragchew.
We soon
found we had similar experiences and we both got involved in the hobby
around the
same time, although I was the slower off the mark in that regard. What
could have
been a five minute deal elsewhere was an enjoyable conversation of sharing
that went
on for over an hour when time caught me out.

It is one of life¡¯s pleasures to enjoy meetings like this which are, to
me, so much
more in the spirit of amateur radio, than the quick ¡°you¡¯re 5 9 and look
forward to
our next contact¡± engagement that seems to be popular on air. Amateur
radio may be
enjoyed alone but it blossoms when shared in company.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Around my part of the world, if you haven¡¯t got the outside chores done
you will
have to hold off for some days. Mowing grass when the ground is sodden is
not on the
agenda and all good amateurs will have done their summer preparation for
rain, wind,
storms and the like. With 10metres and 6 metres crating some excitement,
in the past
week, it is good news that we can sit inside the shack and enjoy the fun
without
worrying too much about the effects of the weather.

We just can¡¯t take things too easily with a couple of low pressure systems
effecting
the coast and a watch on the northernmost one in case it decides to turn
nasty in
the Coral Sea. The expectation was for the coast of the country to receive
around 11
cyclones this summer.

I hope that your Christmas events ²¹°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù too much upset by inclement
weather as
clubs and workplaces share the festive spirit of the Christmas season and
parents
and grandparents prepare for the traditions of Christmas Day. Perhaps the
current
climate is a warning to be prepared for different conditions this year, I
»å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù
know. But ever cautious we perhaps should be looking for alternative
venues for the
cold meat and fruit pudding and custard if we have plans to share with the
ant
colonies out doors. The winds that whip sand in your face and the rain
that washes
away the enjoyment of the happy gathering are points for us to consider as
possibilities.

One of the many concerns for the radio using community is the influx of
untested and
uncertified electrical and electronic festive decorations. The electrical
noise that
radiates from modern household attachments such as solar photo voltaic
systems is
currently being enhanced by the plethora of flashing and blinking
decorations people
adorn their living areas with. It maybe a gift to the radio hobbyist world
if when
we come across particular devices that do not radiate that we record the
details in
a data base.

I see that our WIA has said the ACMA is under resourced and that is a
major driver
of its efforts to institute the class licence system. So many have been
pointing out
the poor resourcing and lack of activity in dealing with EMI for several
years. It
is little wonder that many radio amateurs are sceptical of the claim that
ACMA will
continue to act in the prevention of interference to the amateur service.
However it
doesnt take much reading to realise that spectrum regulators around the
world are
regarded as inept or negligent in this part of their defined duties.

Maybe I shouldn¡¯t worry about what goes in the mythical stocking or what
is under
the Christmas tree but just pray that the genie of the eather grants my
wish and
gets rid of the damned interference because our regulators certainly won¡¯t.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hi, this is John Seamons, vk3jls, from the National Inwards QSL Bureau.

I'm directing this message to all the VK4 amateurs, and the VK4
affiliated radio clubs.

For personal reasons, the VK4 QSL manager has recently resigned, and
we are now left with no VK4 QSL manager to receive and distribute the
VK4 QSL cards. The National Bureau currently is holding some 3,000
cards for VK4, but we have no-one to send them to.

I am calling for any amateur, or Radio club in VK4 who is willing to
undertake this WIA volunteer position to help out your fellow VK4
amateurs, who are patiently waiting to receive their Bureau QSL cards
that are stuck in VK3 land.

We currently have a number of States and Territories where the sorting
and distribution is undertaken within radio clubs, and this may be a
great option to help ease the workload within the State.

If anyone is interested in helping out their fellow amateurs, please
contact me for any further details, or any questions you may have via:-

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Last week was a brain fade as I prepared this segment and I introduced it
as if it
was for this week. Thankfully our ever vigilant News Editor, was on the
ball and
managed to not only detect my error but also tidy up the mistakes as well.
Thank you
Graham.

One of the things about amateur radio is that it has a history of re
purposing
equipment as well as restoring old gear and we have a mixture of gear
working the
airwaves from fully thermionic to fully software defined radios. However,
we see in
the western countries, in particular, the demise of the repair industry
for consumer
level electronics and along with the repairmen has gone much of the
sources of spare
parts for older gear. Although it was always technically illegal for the
appliance
operating citizens band user to even take the covers off rigs, we should
perhaps be
thankful that many have moved on from the era of the golden screwdriver to
become
competent at fault finding, repair and modification.

I raise this as from time to time I see plaintive posts from people
seeking help in
rectifying problems with brand name radios where there is no longer
suitable repair
facilities nearby or even within the country. The solution is for
referrals to go by
word of mouth to get service for equipment which is built to a level far
beyond the
competency of the average amateur to diagnose and repair.
We now live in the world where many a backyard repairman has become this
³ó´Ç²ú²ú²â¡¯²õ
benefactor.

This takes me to another point of interest and that is the second hand
market where
vintage and veteran gear seems often to attract a premium price, at least
in the
mind of the seller, that the time since manufacture multiplies its worth
regardless
of numbers made or cosmetic condition and functionality. Some of the
public sites
are the worst of offenders in this regard and the profiteering is really
obvious to
the old hands and a trap for the newbie. From what I have seen, CB
equipment is
often the worst items to purchase from these online sellers.

In the run up to the summer gift giving, if you are in the market for
getting radio
gear, particularly from the second hand market, I suggest that you check
with your
local radio club as many clubs dispose of gear for members and silent
keys. You will
normally find that the gear has been checked for functionality and it is
priced at a
fair price for both the seller and the buyer. If you are looking for new
equipment,
you may have left your run too late with many disruptions and delays in
supply to
retailers.

And now to finish; I received my latest Amateur Radio magazine during the
week and
an important notice is included on the back of the address label page.
Nominations
have been called for the WIA Board and I ask that people who feel they can
offer
assistance in this office, complete the nomination paper.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Stores are already bursting with festive colours and signage with trinkets
and food
stuffs packaged for Christmas. How the days have lengthened as the
temperature has
risen, certainly in my part of the world. Now is the time to be collecting
sunscreen
and insect repellent and all the other essentials for that break of
continuity we
call the ¡°holidays¡±.

In the past week, as most of us would be aware now, the Wireless Institute
survey
into the response to proposed class licence system was released. I for one
have
logged on and completed the survey which is in total just 24 questions
long. For
amateurs who ²¹°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù members of the WIA, you are invited to log on and
register and
complete this survey. It is a major change in how our licensing and
governance is to
be conducted and the more comprehensive and representative the final
submission is
to the ACMA, the greater benefits will accrue to us all.

I »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù represent the WIA in an official way as I am just one volunteer
but in the
next two weeks before submissions close, it would seem appropriate for as
many of us
as possible to submit our thoughts on the matters that are under
consideration.
There is definitely no requirement to support any recommendation of the WIA
Committee in this survey and there is ample provision for people to
disagree and put
in their own ideas. What I suggest is that clubs can assist in helping
their members
in lodging their own ideas or indeed support a considered club opinion by
completing
the survey. Whether it is a matter of contesting call signs, high power
operation or
other items such as reciprocal licensing, it is now the time to advise the
ACMA via
a method which reduces double handling of submissions. Let¡¯s make this
survey an
early seasonal present to the radio amateurs of VK-land.

I also have a request to listeners. As the year draws to a close can we
remember our
fellows amateurs and let the people who are in the large club loosely
known as
shortwave listeners know what is happening in your area. A quick greeting
or a
longer piece of audio will let the SWL contingent better understand how
many people
follow the weekly news broadcasts. Make it a Happy Christmas this year by
lodging a
message on QNews. Details of how to lodge story content is listed at the
bottom of
the text edition.

So keep safe and enjoy the gatherings and band conditions.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

I was fortunate that in my area the clouds stayed away and the spectacle
of the
Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse could be watched in it full brilliance. I note
that many
people failed to get the front row seats that we had and now have to wait
another
couple of years for a new performance in the heavens.

It seems that the solar indices are suggesting we can expect more good radio
conditions on the upper high frequency bands and people have been enjoying
good DX
on 17, 15 and ten metres. It seems that 20m has been quite active and the
lower
bands are starting to reflect the start of summer with storm crackles
behind some
very good signals. If the forecasters are correct, the coming week is
certainly
going to continue the storm activity, particularly in the central areas of
VK2 and
VK4 with systems likely to sweep up the east cost of the continent. In the
inland
areas, there remain possibilities of continued floods so it is that we
live in
interesting and difficult times for many people.

As Christmas rushes down the calendar we should be checking the listings
of the
contests that happen over the summer period. With interesting modes of
propagation
during these months, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a good opportunity
to take
part in some of the activities. Our sunspot cycle can assist on the
shortwave bands
and the summer conditions assist in gaining contest point on the VHF
bands. Apart
from the festivities that the season brings, it is also good time to play
radio when
these events align for us.

I have been watching some of the postings from people using the new QRP
SDR radios
which produce from milliwatts to maybe 10Watts on a good power supply. So
many
people are enjoying automated or near automatic contacts using various
digital modes
but old fashioned analogue contacts are proving to be quite possible again
with
negligible power. For the Foundation operators, this is perhaps an
incentive to
seriously try HF contacts with conditions favouring those who get on air
and call.
These flea power rigs are being used for POTA and similar activities where
carrying
a full blown station to the site isn¡¯t warranted.

I watched a video posted by Kevin, VK4UH, some months ago where he showed the
benefits of the available ¡°aluminium¡± brazing rods in joining various
metals we
amateurs seek to use. I have a project at the moment which would benefit
by firmly
joining some stainless steel items together. I opened a packet of thin
rods which I
have and lit the propane torch for a trial. I can now attest that these
magic pieces
of wire do in fact nicely adhere to stainless steel and I can go ahead with
finishing that part of the project.

These so called aluminium brazing rods are available from many online
sources both
from overseas and locally. If you need something joined for strength and
electrical
continuity I would suggest spending a small amount and getting a pack of
rods and
watch a few tutorials on using them from YouTube.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?
Maybe it is the time for reminiscence and nostalgia but isn¡¯t it
interesting to
reflect on the journey we take in our life and particularly our
recreation. It is a
thing that has gripped my mind since I was in the literal short pants part
of my
schooling and coming to grips with the unseen mysteries of the world. The
wireless,
as it was then popularly known, was an instrument of value in households
and usually
the only unit for the family to use.

It was getting the initiation into the magic of the crystal set, which a
long time
previous had been the simple way of having wireless at home, that set me
on the path
towards amateur radio. To my young mind, the connection to the electrical
outlet
seemed more important than the wire which was partly hidden along the
picture rail
in the room. With the crystal sets it was the wire, usually brought in
from outside
where it could be stretched out longer and higher, that became as
important as the
mysterious 240Volt connection. From there it was progression through
library books
and borrowed magazines and gathering pocket money to make my first receiver.

However my story is unique to me and your story will be vastly different
but the
destination has been along a shared road of learning, perhaps building,
and gaining
the knowledge to get the prized paper, known in the jargon as the ticket, the
licence that allows us to operate an amateur radio station.

Through the convolutions that life brings, I enjoyed listening and sometimes
building things electronic but years past before I got that ticket and I
confess it
was nervous excitement that I felt when I set up the rig and put out my
first call.
Like, perhaps the majority of people today, I started on 2m FM. Today the
cost of
cheaply manufactured handhelds is such that most people can afford a radio
before
they save the cost of the assessments and licence fee. I had witnessed the
introduction of the Novice Licence and the introduction of CB and my
ambition then
became to work on HF.

I have since seen the Novice Licence morph into the Standard Licence and
the coming
of the Foundation licence and the internet has become more necessary than
a wired
telephone to the average person. I listened to SSB come to the amateur
bands and now
we have digital systems linked via the internet and just as the first
satellite sent
out HI in Morse we have geostationary satellites that are multimode
repeaters and
engineering students cut their teeth delivering lunch box sized satellites
to the
International Space Station and other launch vehicles which further their
education
and often encourage hams to engage in the experiments too.

I have memories and mementos of my time spent engaged in this pursuit and
each of us
will be able to identify with that. The aging pieces of equipment, the box
of QSL
cards and perhaps some log books will contrast with the newer and smaller
rigs
showing the progress from valves through analogue solid state and now to
the joys of
software defined radios.

Yes my friends our journeys have and will take us along way and as we pass
along the
friendships we make will illuminate our memories for ever.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

News of a Silent Key, Nick Watling VK4YT

Radio Amateurs across the world are coming to grips with the news of
the loss of one of the most knowledgeable tech ops in the field of
heritage and military radio equipment.

Nicholas James Gregory Watling VK4YT (and formerly VK2AWT, VK4AWT,
VK1NW and VK4WT) went Silent Key in Cairns on Saturday 22nd October
2022 following recurring bouts of illness.

RAAF Service Number O15612 as a pilot with final rank of Squadron
Leader with DFC awarded for Gallantry in Vietnam on 31st October
1968, Service as a pilot with QATB Aerial Ambulance out of Cairns,
Service as a pilot with Royal Flying Doctor Service Cairns Base on
retirement as Chief Pilot, once retired 7000+ hours on watch with
Cairns Coast Guard and all the time building a wealth of knowledge
about all manner of transmitters and receivers, sharing that knowledge
with hams and museums across the world and getting some really tricky
bits of equipment on air. For many, he was the go-to person when
they had an equipment conundrum.

Nick was a member of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club, a
former member of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club, a former
President of the Cairns Amateur Radio Club and participated in
events with the Tablelands Radio Group.

When travelling Nick was a regular on the Travellers Net
aeronautical mobile and did the occasional 2m contact from the
radio shack with big wings.

Many hams in the North were intrigued with the descriptions that
Nick transmitted using equipment he had refurbished on-air during
the yearly AM and CW on ANZAC Day events. His activities spurred
many other hams to get heritage and military equipment on-air.

We have lost a colossus in Amateur Radio.

Vale Nick Watling VK4YT, Silent Key

This is Allan VK4HIT with news from Ipswich and District Radio Club.

JOTA/JOTI is the annual event in which Scouts from all over the
world connect with each other by means of amateur radio and the
internet. This year the club loaned its IC-718 and FT-7700 for the
week-end. James VK4FCAV reports various contacts were made via HF,
VHF and Echolink. Plans are already underway for 2023.

JOTA/JOTI also serves to promote amateur radio to new audiences with
the hope than some join amateur ranks in the future.

This year¡¯s club Christmas BBQ lunch is booked for Saturday November
26 at Kholo Gardens in Ipswich. It¡¯s byo food to cook on one of
several BBQs in the park. No bookings are necessary, just turn up
from 10am.

A reminder the club holds two evening meetings at the clubhouse each
month. A social get together on the second Monday and a business
meeting on the fourth Monday with both starting at 19:30 hours.

Weather permitting the next WICEN event is the Mount Glorious Trail
Run on November 13 while The Pinnacles is on the rescheduled date of
December 11. It will start one hour earlier to take advantage of
available daylight. If you can support any of WICEN events by
volunteering at checkpoints, please email ipswichwicen@...

Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well it is rather obvious and good manners say that one shouldn¡¯t state
the obvious
but the past week has been interesting with the weather systems bringing
storms and
lots of rain around the VK4 area. The south and central areas have had the
threats
of flooding abate only to see the Northern Rivers area of VK2 succumb to
the heavy
rainfalls.

The hail that made thinking almost impossible as it clattered off the iron
roof was
a new experience in this location for us and the thunder and lightening have
provided spectacle but not necessarily the thrills.

Whilst this has been going on, the bands have been both good and bad and the
electrical activity has raised the radio noise levels above the poorly
suppressed
hash from myriads of cheaper and non certified bits of domestic
electronics. Still
the nightly DX seems to continue in spite of the abundant storm activity.
Such is
the way with short wave activity and we should benefit with more regular
DX on the
higher end of HF as we traverse the current sun spot cycle 25.

Amongst the update emails from the ACMA was one this week announcing a
beta version
of a new access site for clients to check details and perform routine
operations
such as pay licence fees and update contact details. Although I have
registered to
receive the update emails, to use ACMA Assist, it is necessary to have an
account
which can be set up online. If you already have a digital ID it is a
simple process
but using other documents such as a driver¡¯s licence this process is
simple to do
and complete the process. As an aside, you have the option to download the
Australia
Post app and save your digital ID to you phone.

This is a step in the right direction for any one with internet and who is
an ACMA
client. Hopefully this service will ultimately work as efficiently as
those we read
about serving overseas amateurs and maybe it will provide incentive to
modernise the
largely manual licencing process that we currently are forced to use. With
the spate
of successful hacks of major private sector IT services, it is heartening
to know
that government sector systems seem to have better on-line security and so
that
shouldn¡¯t be a reason to delay improving client IT services.

The time is moving on to when responses will need to be ready to go to the
regulator
concerning the Class Licencing proposals for the Amateur Service. Although
the WIA
committee is hard at work, it will benefit the whole cohort if as much
thought goes
into this as possible. Just as the changes almost 20 years ago have helped
grow our
numbers, the outcomes of this will define our pursuit for years to come.
Please give
it your best shot.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

In my part of the world it is out with the wet weather gear and the forecast
suggests that about ? of the state will have the same experience. It seems
that our
weather watchers are working within a new attitude where the
administration wants
the body to be known as ¡°the Bureau¡± instead of the diminutive ¡°the BoM¡±.
With the
hegemony of thing from the United States it is likely that such a change
would
suggest our meteorologists could be confused with G-men in suits and packing
handguns. I like the ease of referring to the BoM and to speakers of
Aussie English
there is no adverse reflection on the body and no confusion as to the body.

For many radio operators in the southern hemisphere, the Bom provides a
very useful
space weather service. If you haven¡¯t caught up with it use your preferred
search
engine or follow the link in the text edition of the news. You will find
these
materials suit our use much better that reports generated overseas.

Sadly the reports started coming in of severe atmospherics during the mid
week and
the storm activity is expected to last another few days yet. Whilst
propagation has
been reasonable on HF the noise has been influencing peoples¡¯ choices of
activity
and modes. If you enjoy listening during times when antennas need to be
disconnected, then we are fortunate to have access to plentiful remotely
operated
SDR receivers to follow operations on air. Then you may be able to access
nets on
systems which allow internet linking but always ensure that your gear is as
protected as possible from nearby static surges. Connections to mains power,
telephone lines with metal conductors can all bring the dreaded release of
the magic
smoke that keeps our electronics working. Replacing modems, computers and
other
equipment is not a good use of time, in my opinion.

So having resigned myself to not going on air during the current weather
there is
the old fashioned option of using wet weather to catch up on my reading.
This has
been the long standing standby of people when hoped for activities get
cancelled.
Find a comfortable nook, select something interesting to read and have
some food and
drink at hand and enjoy a relaxing period of just catching up without feeling
stressed to be doing something else. Too often, people forget what reading
can
provide as entertainment and instruction. It doesn¡¯t have to be knocking
over a
potboiler, it can even be browsing the manual of a new piece of gear and
fiddling
with the controls to see if the instructions are correct. It can be going
over some
detail of a mode you would like to try or it could be magazines that take
the mind
to the great outdoors. The idea is to let the mind go free and enjoy a
break from
routine.
It is up to the reader to decide if they want a musical background but
whatever you
do enjoy the experience. For those who have issues with too much rain,
please stay
safe.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Since we last were together the Bureau of Meteorology has released its
summary for
the expected Spring and Summer weather. If you have missed it, I would
suggest you
have a read and digest the rather chilling prognostications. Up to 11
cyclones
around the coast is just the start. Being familiar with what may be in
store will
help us each prepare for weather outcomes in our area.

Just on the topic of preparation, as the warmer weather seems to be
stretching
itself to cover the land, we should have ticked off the list of
maintenance items
for our stations and be able to sleep soundly knowing antennas will stay
erected and
surrounds are safe from flying objects or flammable items if we are liable to
experience bush fires. A suitable container should have the basics for an
emergency
evacuation should that be possible where we live. Here we need to follow the
recommendations of the emergency services to protect ourselves and one
item that
some may overlook is ensuring a minimum supply of food for 3 days is
available to
take if you have to evacuate or enough to over the normal period of
isolation from
severe weather in your area.

It seems awkwardly funny to be listing these precautions because so many
people take
themselves and families on holidays and spend large amounts of effort in
planning
the adventure. The main difference is that we need to add the fact that in
uncertain
situations we have to prepare for the future. Money, food, fuel,
identification
papers and other documents such as bank cards and insurance details needs
to be
available in case the worst ever happens. Here I can speak from experience
with once
having had my house burn down. Apart from the emotions surrounding loss,
you then
have to face dealing with establishing your identity and getting records
replaced.

I wonder how many of our clubs are preparing for the summer season when
there are
contests and good weather, we hope. Is there the possibility of engaging
with the
local community during this period when schools, colleges and uni are in
recess. It
is a strange time with the spread of 7 day shopping and in some places,
extended
hours trading. Some people get to travel and others are tied to their
usual income
source. Grandparents can be overwhelmed with visiting youngsters and
families can be
embroiled in the festive spirits in December.

For people enjoying the spirit of JOTA/JOTI there has been an opportunity
to canvas
the interest of participants in possible holiday period activities. At the
other end
of the age spectrum many club and activity groups will be taking a break
during the
mid summer as well. Is it worth checking if people from those areas would
like to
experience some ham radio activities? Now is the time to check these
things out and
prepare as already the retailers are promoting the tinsel and fattening
foods that
we associate with Christmas.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

It is almost a liturgical expression that summarises the situation for radio
operators, this week. So it is in the heavens above as it is on the earth
below. No
doubt we have all been paying attention to the weather forecasts in the
past few
days with currently about one third of Queensland inland in the south and
west under
a flood watch. The Sun is also being interesting with various holes
throwing flares
which are threatening radio blackouts. As the United States, Puerto Rico
and the
Caribbean countries deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian the warnings
have been
put out to first responders, in particular, to expect possible radio
blackouts.

As our local authorities remain on alert for possible widespread flooding,
the
caution that I suggested previously seems all the more pertinent for
amateur radio
activities in the outdoors. Whether we are solo or in company we need to
be able to
ensure that at the end of the day we have a safe road home.

I must confess that the discussion paper released by the ACMA sits by my
bed as I
try and absorb the details of the expected Class Licence provisions for
amateur
radio. As we have been alerted by Roger, VK2ZRH, the WIA is already
working via its
committee system on the analysis of the paper in order to frame the
response. In the
coming weeks I would expect to hear more on this subject on WIA
NationalNews as a
stimulus to members and clubs for their own discussions. For many years
there has
been a move by the regulator to institute a class licence for our Service
and for
many years there has been a reluctance for amateurs to acquiesce. Although
not an
entirely done deal yet, the change is coming and it is important that we
do not lose
the protections the ITU places around the self instruction hobby we know
as ham
radio.

I would hope that people are giving some of their free time to consider
what is in
the discussion paper and club members take their thoughts and comments to
their
meetings. You will note that the ACMA has made mention of how it will view
submissions from constituents and it does allow for input of individual
ideas as
well as from organisations. I suppose we could say, it is time to give
some time to
thinking and to share the outcome to advance the hobby.

If some of the scores that have been claimed for last week¡¯s OCDX Contest
are an
indicator, the bands were good not withstanding the radio blackout that
happened
towards the end. May good conditions be with us still.

For everyone facing the inclement weather and to those on standby to
assist, I trust
the coming days ²¹°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù too stressful and you all remain safe and secure.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

This is Allan VK4HIT with news from Ipswich and District Radio Club.

Ipswich WICEN coordinator Robert VK4KHW reported at last month¡¯s
business meeting that the Lake Manchester event went well and
thanked all volunteers who assisted with radio communications.
The number of runners was down on previous years. The Pinnacles event
which was to held on September 25 was cancelled owing to weather
conditions affecting the course. At this stage it may not be
rescheduled. The last event Ipswich WICEN will support for this year
is the Mt Glorious Trail on Sunday November 13. Please contact
Robert on email; ipswichwicen@... if you can help with manning
one of several radio checkpoints.

In other club news, training officer Greg VK4GJW will start a new
Foundation licence course from this Tuesday October 4 with proposed
exam dates being around December 4.

On November 14, a social night at the clubhouse, a flowerpot antenna
building workshop will be held. You are welcome to attend and learn
how to construct and then take home a cheap dual band antenna ideal
for portable and outside work, such as WICEN events.

And finally, the club has welcomed three new members ¨C
Kerry Black VK4KDB, David Zeibarth and Kelly Thompson.

Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

There have been many stories created around the lines ¡°It was the best of
times. It
was the worst of times.¡± You may know the reference if your English
classes covered
the literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. None the less, I
thought
it an appropriate point to make this week.

The weather pattern has been bringing storms with the resulting crashes from
speakers when tuned to HF but propagation has been providing good DX. The
southern
hemisphere is moving into the summer pattern of radio signals coming in on
different
modes and there are contests coming to enjoy. The earthly weather is
forecast to be
wetter and possibly wilder than the norm so field day activities may be a
mixed bag
for this period.

During the week we have had figures from the financial world showing us
that major
currencies are falling in value, share prices managed to drop and for
those of us
depending on providing our own transport, fuel prices have jumped higher.
All these
indicators suggest we should be tightening the purse strings whilst the
financial
regulators struggle to tame the inflation demon. However, it depends on which
currencies give us the best benefit which may determine our buying
patterns for new
equipment and travel. At the moment, I understand that the local dollar
has hit a 40
year low but conversion rates favour spending in New Zealand. It is all so
interesting but I remain confused about what the situation will be when it
is time
to place presents under the Christmas tree.

The availability of money for personal expenditures such as radio
equipment is a
consideration for us personally but for the club planning activities, it
is also.
With fuel prices increased, hiring transport rather than each operator
travelling
separately will probably the most efficient means of getting to events. The
logistics of transporting equipment is another matter to add to the planning.
Perhaps there will be cause for people to revive onboard entertainment
other than
allowing the mobile phone attention deficit disorder to prevail.

Venue choices for contesting and field days may need to allow for not only
inclement
weather but also dangerous conditions as we approach the tropical cyclone
season.
Being able to travel and stay safely also suggests that the return journey
is able
to be accomplished as well. The nice hilly vantage point that is reached
by shallow
water crossings may have to be substituted for a less advantageous site
that gives
shelter and a safe way home instead.

For many things, suitable alternatives can be found like using a country
hall that
allows for people to use camp beds or sleeping bags as a substitute for
the 4x4 trek
and sleeping under the stars. Sharing fuel and hire costs for a mini-bus
can be more
effective than everyone making their own way to a site and doing as much
planning on
the travel plans as the station layout can make the whole event more
efficient.

It can be the best of times and doesn¡¯t have to be the worst of times and
I¡¯m Geoff
Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

News has been received that long time member and former
Secretary and Treasurer of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club,
Dave West ex VK4DK & VK4ADW & VK4ZMD of Atherton went Silent Key in
Atherton Hospital 8th September after a two year battle with
Parkinsons Disease.

Dave was a very active RadioAmateur, a dedicated member of
Lions International, a foundation member of the Tablelands Radio and
Electronics Club Inc. and for a while a member of The Townsville
Amateur Radio Club Inc.

Dave was a very accomplished musician and it didn't take much to
convince him to belt out a tune on his trusty guitar at amateur
radio field days and social events.

Dave's Celebration of Life was held on Monday 19th September 2022
at Mountain View Chapel, Guilfoyle Tablelands Crematorium, Atherton.
Dave's service was well attended by family and friends plus a strong
contingent of TRECians.

Dave's dedication to duty with fun and his virtuoso musical skills
will be extremely missed.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

This past week has seen perhaps the biggest series of media events that
the English
speaking and international communities have witnessed with the coverage of
the death
of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The fluidity of the coverage is a
credit to the
planning that has been continuing for some years but the technology has
been amazing
to witness in its results. For older members of the community memories
remain of the
cinema footage at the beginnings of the second Elizabethan era and then have
progressed through monochrome TV to what we saw, this past week. For all
of us with
an enthusiasm for things electronic we have witnessed major progress in
the field.

As an aside, there was a certain confusion caused by messages put out that
the AX
prefix might be used as a memorial to Her Majesty. It was noted that this was
contrary to our rule book, the LCDs and an inference was drawn that
compliance
action was not priority by the ACMA. Apart from the fact that pirate
operation would
invalidate any claims for contacts submitted for awards it was the fact
that the
spirit of our pursuit was being called into disrepute that worried many
operators.
We should not encourage the breach of the regulations under which we are
licenced.
It can be hoped that no supposedly sanctioned breaches are advertised in
future. As
a service we strive to be correct in our operations and not place our
Regulator in
an embarrassing position.

For people who have been around some time, the CB heyday was back in the
1980s and
many people got their first experience of personal two way radio
communications in
that time. One group of people who saw benefit in radio were the many who
suffered
chronic illness and disability. No longer were they depending on the
telephone, the
landline, for outside contact but with simple commercially available
equipment they
could enjoy conversation with numerous other people and on HF this could
be local
and international DX.

So where are we today? Are we reaching out to spread the word to people
who were
once ¡°shut in¡± and displaying what our selection of the radio hobby can
offer? It
occurs to me that within the terms of NDIS and Homecare packages, good
arguments can
be presented for funding equipment to sustain social contact and hobby
interests.
Surely there is an entry point for amateur radio and CB to again become
popular
recreations in the digitally connected world. Yes, there are plenty of
means of
messaging via video, audio and text but there is that other perspective
that radio
brings, the capacity to meet spontaneously. Further there is the mind
stretching
that learning about radio brings which is quite different to games running
on a
device and there is the satisfaction of trialling various forms of
experimentation.

Yes I am biased in favour of radio and amateur radio in particular but
isn¡¯t it
something to share around?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

There are the times when I sit t the keyboard and the mind is bubbling
with ideas
flowing to the surface and breaking out into the light. Other times, the
thoughts
are there but the means of expressing them are subdued and I have to coax
them out
like shy young pets that need the confidence to show themselves. This is
the issue
that publicity officers for clubs may have and they start to feel
inadequate that
they really can¡¯t present the news of their club adequately. I find that
starting
the piece I wish to prepare seems the best way to get the thoughts into a
coherent
flow and then the ideas go on the paper with the necessary polish and tidy
up before
the recording is made.

One of the things that I have had to get my head around is that the way I
speak, in
part, determines the flow of words as well as their choice. What I am
saying is, if
you are preparing an audio or video recording which is scripted, »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù
forget to be
yourself. Telling a story or making an announcement is always going to be
best done
as naturally as possible unless it is something formal which can be read
as it
appears on the page.

In the recent past, I made mention of the possibility of the recurrence of
a la Nina
and the faltering of the Bureau of Meteorology to declare one. Well the
matter has
been settled and the various levels of government and departments and
agencies are
releasing warnings to get us to prepare for the possibility of higher
rainfalls
during Spring and Summer. This year, we are being reminded that the soil
is still
water logged from the past two wet periods and the likelihood of flash
flooding is
increased with the runoff not being able to soak in.

An important reminder is being put out for us to think about our
neighbours and to
check that they are prepared too. Without lessening the seriousness of the
flooding
disaster that is taking place in Pakistan, that country is providing a
clear lesson
on the outcomes of rain water that can¡¯t get away. With amateurs committed
to local
bodies which provide community support, perhaps it is an area where radio
clubs can
offer a little as well. Being able to ensure those around us have the
necessary
means to get help if it is needed is very important in critical situations.

Perhaps your club can touch base with your local Council Disaster Management
Committee and offer assistance with communications. Perhaps some refresher
talks on
emergency communications for members and having some of the local first
responders
talk to members could be worthwhile in your area. Knowing who to contact
and how to
give support through participation in our hobby and via local service
organisations
can give the satisfaction of giving help when it was needed.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

It is with great sadness, that the Bayside and District Amateur Radio
Society announces the passing of *George Turner VK4HGT*

George passed away suddenly on Friday September 2 having reached the
age of 101.

VK4HGT was a well respected member of the Club who had joined BDARS
in the early years of the Clubs formation, having started his
interest in the hobby with Citizen Band Radio back in its Hay Days,
George was a somewhat late starter into Amateur Radio having only
gained his Foundation License at the age of 74 and upgrading to
Standard Level at the age of 91.

That alone could show you how tough and determined George was.

To say George had led an interesting life would be an understatement
to say the least. At 101, George Turner was one of the only surviving
veterans of the 39th battalion that served in the Kokoda campaign in
Papua New Guinea, having recently attended a ceremony on the
Gold Coast, marking 80 years since the Kokoda campaign.

At the recent Kokoda ceremony, George stated;

"I was only about 20 when I was up there. I got to 101 ¡ª lucky
wasn't I"

"I was a truck driver ¡ one of two truck drivers ¡ the other one was
sergeant by rank. He got killed in the first bombing raid. He was
sleeping beside me at the time, about six feet away."*

George was very generous with his time, always willing to help with
Club activities back in those early years. He was a friendly and a
likeable bloke as well. For many years he was the voice behind the
microphone on the HF Traveler¡¯s Net across Australia.
Operating Daily with other relays to ensure the safety of other
Amateurs travelling around Australia and being there to provide
support should it be required. He was still doing this at the age of
101 until very recently.

George was also active on the 2 meter band via the local repeater
and could be often heard talking with his friends and his son who is
also a local Amateur Operator. George would often be seen riding his
scooter to the local Coffee shop for his daily outing. George was
still very much independent , still living on his own and enjoying
life and his radio.

George will be greatly missed.

Vale George Turner - VK4HGT

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

A big shout out to the various people who are posting to web sites and
social media
accounts with content showing all sorts of club activities. I wonder if
you have a
few minutes more in your week that you could put a small segment together
for the
state news bulletin? Often what I see is written in a way that you can
record the
audio directly to your phone and the text just has to be copied into an
email.

The reason that I mention this again is that there are listeners to the news
broadcasts and we »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù get to see them reflected in the call back
numbers. Then
there are the people on their own who »å´Ç²Ô¡¯³Ù belong to clubs or who are
unable to
attend meetings and they like to know of what is going on around the
ridges. There
are lots of things happening but we ²¹°ù±ð²Ô¡¯³Ù getting to learn about them
perhaps until
they have concluded with the bi-monthly publishing schedule of Amateur Radio
magazine. A spot on the news broadcast tells every listener how vibrant this
activity really is.

Our News Editor, Graham, VK4-Baker-Baker will be only too pleased to
receive your
segments and if they can become regular so much better. Check the details for
lodging material on the WIA web site and the end of each bulletin or email

qnews@...

One of the stories of the past week has been the release by the ACMA of its
prospective work schedule for the next 5 years. The obvious areas of
interest for us
are the transitional changes from spectrum to class licensing. We have
already had
some previous notices from the regulator of the way it views the changes
for the
Amateur Service and we should see the culmination of the regulatory
framework in the
coming months.

The other area of importance is the preparatory work for the next World Radio
Conference. This is really the Olympic Games of the regulatory system with
contingents from around the world and most countries attending. The idea
is to reach
agreement on standards and spectrum usage so that harmful interference is
minimised
to users in adjacent areas. It has been the position that Australia has
been able to
have amateur radio operators attending as part of the official contingent
at these
conferences. It has also been the responsibility of the amateur community
to fund
the expenses of those delegates. This is something to be kept in mind for the
future.

Maybe there is the opportunity for clubs to use the locally sponsored sausage
sizzles to raise funds to ensure our voice is heard in Geneva at the next
WRC. I can
remember listening to calls for donations from individuals during state news
broadcasts from long ago. More recently I can recall requests for support
in the
printed material arriving in the letter box. Perhaps now is the time to
think of
funding our delegates as a way of ensuring the growth and participation of
our hobby
here and world wide.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?
