Until next week, this was Ed Durrant VK2JI for the Central ?????? Coast Amateur Radio club,? 73. ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* ? ? ? Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.
?If you haven¡¯t caught up with Space Weather Woman, Dr. Tamitha Skov, it is worth spending a little time on YouTube to catch her presentations. It is interesting to see the graphics and her explanations make the face of the sun more interesting to us radio nuts. With updates from NASA you get a good idea of what is going to happen over the coming week. ? As an amateur, herself, Dr. Skov, makes sure the hams are told what to expect.
?Now that I have mentioned Youtube, I have been enjoying the ability to watch material devoted to our hobby. The NBN has certainly been a boon to this household. As I catch up, I have found the RSGB Convention lectures worth a look and also, the co-sponsored by the RSGB, TX Factor. TX Factor seems to have an intermittent programming schedule but it is produced to professional standards in a magazine format. ? ?There are other channels that I have been enjoying whilst refreshing my knowledge of the science and technology that supports amateur radio. For the old dog, there is always the opportunity to refresh one¡¯s understanding of a subject and for the novice there is material to start you on the journey into a fascinating pastime. The internet is proving itself to be a useful resource for sharing and learning about amateur radio. I haven¡¯t even started to catch up on podcasts and they are a whole other resource for us to use.
?If you search around there are archives of magazines and text book waiting for the enthusiast to read. Then there are some free e-zines on various aspects of amateur radio and electronics. As yet I haven¡¯t found a definitive teach yourself site that will take you to getting your licence but the app from the Radio and Electronics School, RES, goes a long way to getting you prepared for a Foundation assessment. ? Some people may remember in years gone by that I complained that access to the net was not? readily available, especially in regional and country areas. As the NBN snakes its way around the country, more people, including us, have access to what most households want. I for one am enjoying the ride and can recommend using internet resources for self education and relaxation.

(TARCinc) VK4 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- WICEN ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. Isn¡¯t it wonderful when things come back to normal. The great Christmas choke point has been cleared from the postal services and mail is being delivered surprisingly fast. I ordered a tool from a Chinese vendor on a notable auction site and 9 days later it was in my hands. I ordered a couple of capacitors from a Brisbane based supplier on Sunday and they arrived on Wednesday. Let us hope this is the new future for mail deliveries in 2020. During the week, I was trying to keep abreast of the amateur radio posts on a social media platform and I read some interesting comments following a news release from the WIA President, Greg, VK2GPK concerning the assistance being given by amateurs in the bush fire relief efforts. As you would expect the topic of WICEN was central to the posts and in some ways seemed to heighten my concern over the visibility of this body or bodies from public view. One correspondent was maybe playing devil¡¯s advocate in questioning the need for amateurs in the professionalised world of disaster management. The very point that the amateur service can rapidly deploy, and has apparently, to provide communications when all else fails, as it has during this fire season. This point was made by another person. However, in clarifying the situation about WICEN, as a body in NSW, it was pointed out that it was not part of the WIA and in an almost Masonic twist it was suggested that unless one was involved in the deployments you would be unaware. I know that WICEN in Qld operates differently and seems to be a loose collection of bodies that operate under the banner of the WICEN name with some affiliation to the Wireless institute. Other states have different arrangements still. The point that I tried to make in a recent segment was that as amateur radio involvement in public service is hardly ever featured in our news or publicity it is a bit like the past tourism slogan, ¡°WICEN, where the bloody hell are you?¡± It never ceases to amaze me that people have the time to explain and argue points on social media but are incapable of sending that same material for publication. There used to be a popular saying, don't hide your light under a bushel. All it meant was, if you have something good to show the world, don¡¯t hide it. Now I happen to believe that volunteers should be recognised for their services and the bodies that they represent should be publicised. When it reflects well on part of the hobby, it reflects well on us all. I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hi, I¡¯m Ed VK2JI It¡¯s great to hear QNEWS over the local repeater but what if you¡¯re out of range on Sunday or you¡¯re living abroad for a while? Yes, you might be able to connect into a repeater via Echolink or tune a remote receiver but in both cases, you have to be around at the same time as the broadcast is being sent. Podcasts are a way of you getting the broadcast sent automatically to your smartphone or tablet or PC for free, so that it¡¯s there when YOU are ready to listen to it, even when, later, you have no Internet connection! Why am I telling you about Podcasts on QNEWS Well as of last weekends show, QNEWS is now available as one of these podcasts. If you have an Apple iPhone or iPad ¨C you already have the program (or App as they are called on mobile devices) which you need as QNEWS is published to the Apple Podcasts site which you may know as iTunes, simply search for QNEWS. If you have an Android Smartphone or tablet there are lots of Apps that you can use. A very easy one, that even saves you having to search for Podcasts about Amateur radio, lists all of the major ones in the App ¨C (including QNEWS is called ¡°Ham Radio Podcasts¡± and comes in both a free (with adverts) version and a paid version. Another advantage of podcasts is that they tend to be published a couple of days before the content is broadcast over the repeaters so you can be ¡°ahead of the curve¡± with your mates telling them the news before they hear it themselves! Hey, it¡¯s all good fun and just another way to listen to your QNEWS (Ed VK2JI) FINAL TEXT FINAL Ladies and Gentlemen, in August 2020 to the end of 2020 we are planning a motorhome tour of several months from Cairns along the coast of Australia via Brisbane - Sydney - Canberra - Melbourne to Adelaide (8-10 Weeks) and via Tasmania (1-2 Weeks) to New Zealand (6-8 Weeks) from Auckland via Wellington to Christ Church. I am qrv with Short-wave and 2m/70cm FM and in D-Star. As a radio amateur (my call is DF6FQ) I am interested in technical museums, especially radio-, radar-, short-wave radio museums, communication museums or special amateur radio museums. Are there amateur radio activities in the sense of amateur radio fairs / amateur radio events, also regional during my trip and in the area of my tour? I am also interested in natural science museums. If you have an overview of these museums, please send it to me with the addresses of the museums or dates for 2020. I am particularly interested in military history topics on the 1st and 2nd World Wars, in military history museums and especially in exhibitions or museums dealing with the development of radio, communication, radar and rocket technology from the begin to 2000. If you have an address list of such museums or historical sites, memorials, special exhibitions etc. which are on the route from Cairns to Melbourne or New Zealand in the second half of 2020, please send it to me. So far I only know that a German tank of the 1st World War is on display in Brisbane in the Museum of Natural History . Thank you very much for your effort. For the Foxhunt on Saturday afternoon we need those who are interested to go to website and complete the entrants form, so that we can gauge if we have sufficient numbers to go ahead or perhaps whether we need to get more volunteers to run the event if there¡¯s a big turn-out. There is minimal amount of rule information on the webpage at the moment, more will, of course, be added closer to the event. REMEMBER don¡¯t rock-up and expect to take part if you haven¡¯t registered your intent through the entrance form. Please register! The Saturday night get-together will be at the historic Grand Hotel in Wyong ¨C the invitation goes out to all hams, SWLs and family who are in the vicinity. Full details to follow nearer the day. Are you clearing out your shack? Don¡¯t forget the Car Boot Sales at the field day with all under cover-spots for up to 60 cars. Pay at the Howarth St. gate as you come in from 6:00am. Get there as early as you can to get the best spot to get rid of your "trash" so you have some money to buy your "new treasures" to take home with you. In fact, of any year! The Wyong Field Day at Wyong racecourse on February 23rd ¨C and don¡¯t forget the fun and games on the 22nd! For the Central Coast amateur radio Club this was Ed VK2JI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. It will soon be election time for WIA members and we will soon be able to read the statements that the candidates for election have provided. So elections tend to be a bit ho-hum or most people with the cynicism that carries over from the political sphere inflicting itself on other matters. What I believe is that no WIA member can feel too bored to place a vote for your preferred candidates when you get your ballot paper. What I believe is that we should support the election of the best people to be our voice in the hurley burley that we call amateur radio. The areas that the Board members have to deal with range from local QSL bureaus to international relations within the IARU and World Radio Conferences. As John, VK4JJW, current Director, expressed it on WIA News, we need people who can think for the hobby and who can think independently and who are not in there on a private mission. We want candidates who represent us and not themselves. This is what we should have in mind when it comes to the election and hopefully it will be in the minds of those who put their names forward. When we check the calendar and see the time for nominations to close is on us, we know the ballot papers will soon be appearing with Amateur Radio magazine and the Convention and AGM in Hobart will soon be with us. At the end of the Convention, the newly structured Board gets to meet and elect the office bearers for the next 12 months. When we have to vote for people to run a body made up of volunteer, most of us don¡¯t think of the time that they will put in fulfilling their position. I have seen ignorant comments from within the hobby that Board members get well paid and have junkets at the expense of the members. That is so wrong on both counts. Our Board members are known to dip into their own pockets for many of the tasks which cost them money. Our Board members do not get paid and they are like your radio club executive and the person flipping the onions on the fundraising barbecue, they are some of us, unpaid volunteers who seek to grow this great hobby of Amateur Radio. So all my fellow WIA members, remember it is our good fortune to vote and do our bit for the hobby too. It¡¯s still the largest gathering of radio amateurs in the southern hemisphere and so you can meet-up with friends old and new. 2. Those wanting to upgrade their licence have the opportunity to do so with qualified examiners on-site for all levels of VK licence and for something more exotic, you can even get a US licence as US Volunteer Examiners will also be at Wyong. 3. Something different this year we are running not one but two Foxhunts from the racecourse on the Saturday as part of the ¡°WYONG-WEEKEND¡± along with the FIELDDAY DINNER, Saturday evening, where all are welcome. 4. St. Michael's College Old Toorbul Point Rd from 8am (vk4tfn) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. It rained. Sometimes it was fine and other times the sky allowed the clouds to wash away the soot and the dust that had been accumulating since before the official bushfire season had begun. Down by the water, people had their decorated gazebos abundant with Australian flags and in the parks people ate picnic food and played backyard sports. The odd fisher could be seen casting hopefully into water that had receded to low tide and surprisingly someone reeled in a lonely flapping fish. Australia day was something that brought people out to enjoy the spirit of the occasion and for some amateurs the thrill of using the novel ¡°AX¡± prefix to their callsigns. As the grey clouds sported away the daylight the night drizzled its way in and tired children and weary parents put away the star spangled talismans for next year. There were many different ways of marking the celebration we call Australia Day and I am sure that you have your own special memories. My day started out with catching the Sunday news broadcast on the limited equipment I had set up and then it was time to attend to family matters which concluded with watching activities on the foreshores of the Wide Bay. I didn¡¯t get to grace the airwaves with my call although I kept an affinity for my fellow operators who did. Now before we get all sentimental remembering the day, just think of what some other people got to spend their time in doing. We were letting the light meal settle and catching up with events going to air on the TV when my mind was snapped to attention by a phone call being announced. Now my phone is the least used one in the house and it is special when it alerts me after sunset. ¡°Hello, is that Geoff Emery?¡± a voice, that I didn¡¯t immediately recognise, asked. It was one of our zealous WIA volunteers calling from interstate hoping to catch up with people who could help tidy up Club records on the WIA web site. Hopefully, I was able to supply some suitable contact details and our call ended. The caller left me to pursue his record keeping and I trust he was successful. Now when you ask people how did they spend their Australia Day, I would like us all to remember this phone call. It was Sunday evening on our national day and someone was giving up family and recreational time to follow up details that clubs haven¡¯t updated on the WIA web site. This is where many people go to find a club in their area in order to join the amateur radio family. Please can we ensure that details are correct from now on? I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* TO SUPPLY QNEWS ITEMS:- Send SCRIPT to qnews@... send audio to QNEWS Tips to get MORE out of your weekly newscast on VK4WIA If you would like to submit club news items for inclusion in QNEWS broadcasts, please email your item in text to:- qnews@... There are a lot of interesting things to do on the Central Coast from the beaches to the reptile park and other attractions but this year the CCARC have added some extra possibilities at the race course as well. For the youngsters there will be a bouncing castle and sweet tooth fairy floss, slushies and snow cones. ¡. St. Michael's College Old Toorbul Point Rd from 8am (vk4tfn) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. When we look around at the posts on web sites, video sharing and social media, apart from a few exceptions, the majority of people enjoying this hobby appear to be from a couple of generations ago. December and January saw special activities devoted to youth, Youth on the Air, in parts of IARU Region 1. It appears to have been well received by the participants with continuing activities being prepared for this year and onwards. This is a worthwhile ambition but it still seems directed to a few participants rather than the many who could enjoy joining amateur radio. In an era when the terms STEM and STEAM have been bandied round, it still seems that projecting activities to the primary and secondary school people has not really been addressed. In this part of Region 3, there seems no real intent at providing more than a perfunctory introduction to STEM subjects from outside the education system. Many years ago, even in the time of the Novice Licence Holders, the VK2 Division of the WIA ran a very successful Youth Education Scheme which had the support of the State Department of Education. No doubt there are people listening to WIA news broadcasts now who got their interest and mentoring via that scheme. More recently there have been isolated clubs which have devised holiday schemes to attract people towards electronics and amateur radio. Surely there must be the opportunity to devote time towards bringing a national youth scheme together. In the 21st century we have more material and resources to devise and disseminate via the internet materials structured for young people. Surely our radio clubs haven¡¯t just become the resource of the middle aged and older. Perhaps, later in the year when the new WIA Board is settled, one portfolio could be re-established for promoting STEM by way of amateur radio. From out here where I sit, it would be good to see the Board once again having directors taking responsibility for various areas in ways that members and clubs can relate to. It may be re-inventing the wheel but it was a scheme that seemed to have good success previous years. Around the world, radio users, particularly those whose interest is in HF, are following the announcements on the birth of Sun Spot Cycle 25. Small eruptions continue to appear and the occasional emission is sent our way. People who have enjoyed listening to shortwave broadcasts, used the 11m CB segment or chased DX on the amateur bands and who have a bit of experience in will remember the times when signals from distant stations were regular, consistent and strong. It is the hope of the fervent DXer that those times will come sooner rather than later. Perhaps when we have some time to do nothing but a bit of thinking, it is a brain exercise to try and list all the bits and pieces that go into this hobby and its running. I would bet that none of us come up with a full list. St. Michael's College Old Toorbul Point Rd from 8am (vk4tfn) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. The change of weather has brought some benefits and some issues. The extent of the rain hasn¡¯t reached some of the western areas where the drought seems intractable. The fires which have caused such devastation are largely extinguished but the cyclone running down the eastern coast has caused several rethinks with its minor changes of direction. Let us hope that this is the worst that this season can throw at us and that recovery from fire, storm and tempest is achieved quickly. In the mean time we need to gently remind operators that just because particular mode is available, they must check and ensure that their grade of licence entitles them to use that band or that frequency is available under their licence conditions. It has been reliably reported that digital modes are being used on bands for which people are not licenced. It is our responsibility to check that we are operating within our licence conditions. As a further assistance to operators, the ACMA has updated its web page called ¡°Amateur operating procedures¡± ( acma.gov.au ) with plain language explanations of many of the subjects you will cover in sitting a regulations assessment. It is not only a great help to people wanting to study for a licence but there is a nice tab at the bottom of the page to print it for future reference. People who are familiar with the UK licence will appreciate the option to print out terms of their licence in plain language. This is a much appreciated return to easier understanding and the ACMA is to be congratulated on this effort. One thing that has sparked some discussions has been the release of the discussion paper by the WIA. People have taken on the issue of call signs and the relevance to location, licence grade and compatibility with software. This is a healthy state of affairs when people can look at options and perhaps come up with improvements and even disagree with preferred position. I must confess I have been somewhat bemused at some comments which suggest that that paper is the actual survey which is yet to be released. Maybe it is honest misunderstanding or maybe it is deliberate mischief but rest assured, we will see survey which promises to rigidly apply proper statistical method to ensure a valid outcome. Dale was a long-time member of the WIA, Cairns Amateur Radio Club, The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. and was a foundation member of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club Inc. Dale was very active for years in 6 metre DX, establishing a number of distance records and was a Nominated Assessor for both the WIA Exams Service and the AMC-AR Exams Service. Dale had served in South Vietnam, with 1 Australian Field Hospital based at Vung Tau AS triage/intensive care medic after doing his basic training at Singleton. 1734666 his service number and Vampire his unit radio call. Dale¡¯s interest in 2 way communication started with this Army service One of his duties while he was there was to monitor 2 way communication between dust off helicopters at the First Australian Field Hospital triage centre, listening at the dust off pad, known as Vampire, waiting for the call ¡°Vampire, this is dust off 7 incoming, your location with 1 KIA, 2 WIA on board. Then he would activate the emergency sirens to call staff down to triage. During this time Dale found it interesting listening to fire support missions being conducted by the US Air force. On return to Australia Dale was based in Darwin, where he travelled extensively around the Northern Territory on MIL-RECCIES. He assisted the Army signaller to set up HF radio where they would listen to Melbourne footy on Radio Australia where ever they camped. On Honourable discharge from the Army Dale joined the Cairns Fire Brigade where part of his duties were working in the communications room, responding to 000 fire calls. At the start of the CB boom in the mid-seventies a group of firies started using 27 MHz radio locally. When they applied for their licences to operate there was a hold up in Canberra, the local radio inspector said simply ¡°to use the initial of your name¡±, so therefore Dale¡¯s first legal call sign was DMC. Dale¡¯s interest quickly developed in Amateur Radio; he studied and sat for his novice licence in 1978. Dale¡¯s interest developed into contesting, emergency communications, DX-ing. Dale was appointed the FNQ District CREST coordinator and was involved in several emergencies in the Cape York District including one CB operator suffering a heart attack whilst camping at the Jardine River. One memorable occasion when Bill Jessop VK4FET cut his head badly with a chainsaw at Wondecla. Dale coordinated the ambulance to collect him. Dale was an assessor with the Australian Maritime College based in Tasmania. Dale holds the Australian 2m VK/ZL SSB Distance record in combination with ZL1CN. Recently Dale had started experimenting with DMR. St. Michael's College Old Toorbul Point Rd from 8am (vk4tfn) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. One of the things that many of us find really challenging is standing up and giving a speech or presentation. Most have us have been through the experience of being microphone shy when we have been new to amateur radio. Speaking to a group in the form of talking to a motion or giving a lecture to our club can seem like a big hill to climb for many of us. Yet we readily share details over the air but doing it face to face is the challenge. When I was in school, one of my teachers decided that I could give the vote of thanks to the guest speaker for our monthly special assembly. I didn¡¯t know what to say or how to say it and what came out was mess of words which brought about unintended laughter, much to my embarrassment. So ended my public speaking career, at least for primary school. As I settled into high school, my English teacher performed a military volunteer selection of you, you and you type and I found myself preparing a short speech for an after class talk off. Sort of pimply faced reality TV before we even had colour TVs. As it was a form of homework, I felt obliged to take part but I knew which one of my classmates was the winner. Well I got that wrong didn¡¯t I? I was off to represent my school in zone finals and then then the State finals of this competition. What little tricks I picked up along the way has helped me when I have had to stand up in front of a few people or an auditorium are 1. Be yourself. I am not a humorous person who can spin a good story or do a stand-up routine in front of an audience yet I can get across a message. 2. Know what you are talking about. People get turned off when the person up front rambles and just remember, if we have been invited to talk, people already know you have knowledge to share with them 3. Find a person in front of you that is responsive, even find several people who are clearly listening and talk to them. You can find the pace of speaking by seeing how quickly they respond. This can be a big help in a large hall when sound can get absorbed and reflected around the room. 4. When you find those people who are responding, do what you do one to one, look them in the eye, hold their attention without making it appear rude. Remember Rule 1¡¡.be yourself. If you can be funny tell a joke to illustrate a point because your enthusiasm for your subject will carry the audience with you. There is no fear of this conference being cancelled due to corona virus! Even though we did have 130 cruise ships stop in Hobart over the 2019/20 season!. The WIA Annual Conference 2020 is only two months away and is shaping up to be one to remember. Let¡¯s have a detailed look over the next few weeks of the activities on the Sunday 10th May 2020. Sunday is packed with half day options. The first option we will cover this week is a trip out to the Grote Reber Museum and Radio Telescope at Mount Pleasant - about a 20 minute bus ride into the Coal River Valley. Grote Reber was the father of radio astronomy, being the first person to build a "big dish" antenna for the purpose of mapping the sky at radio frequencies. He discovered many discrete radio sources, and he mapped the band of bright radio emission from our Galaxy, the Milky Way. Reber came to Tasmania in the late 1950s because of its unique location at high magnetic latitude in the southern hemisphere. He spent 40 years studying low frequency emissions with telescopes he built himself, first in partnership with the University of Tasmania School of Physics, and later on his own at Bothwell. His accomplishments are remarkable, not only in radio astronomy but also in electrical powered transport, in carbon dating of aboriginal settlements, and in the genetic patterns made by growing bean plants. His creative vision had no limits. The museum has exhibits that show Reber's telescopes, his life's work, and his many other interests. A unique feature is Reber's original radio shack, the control building for the radio telescope array at Bothwell, which is installed at the Museum with Reber's original radio equipment in place. The museum also shows the radio frequency spectrum with graphic illustrations and physical demonstrations of electromagnetic waves. The radio sky is shown, with matching illustrations of galaxies as seen in the radio and optical spectrum data acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope. A feature of the Museum is a Virtual Reality Theatre, provided by the Swinburne University of Technology. The museum will show entertaining and educational movies and demonstrations in three dimensions. The tour takes about 1.5 hours. This is a very unique and one off must see museum about a fascinating radio pioneer. groterebermuseum.org.au/ Next to the museum is the University of Tasmania 26m radio telescope that is used for research and you are able to get up close and personal with the dish! Next week Danni VK7FREQ will run through some of the other tours on the Sunday. wia.org.au/joinwia/wia/2020agm/ events.wia.org.au/event/wiaagm2020/ discovertasmania.com.au/about/climate-and-weather bestwesternhotelhobart.com.au/ spiritoftasmania.com.au/offers/wia-annual-conference-2020 See you in Hobart. 73, from Justin VK7TW and the WIA Annual Conference Organising Committee ---------------------------------------------------------------------* CLUBBING ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Caboolture VK4 - Caboolture Radio Club HamFest July 11 (vk7jea) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (J) CENTRAL HIGHLANDS AMATEUR RADIO CLUB The Theresa Creek Campout will be happening from Friday 29th until Sunday 31st May 2020 at Theresa Creek Dam 22 km southwest of Clermont. St. Michael's College Old Toorbul Point Rd from 8am (vk4tfn) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. I have been seeing reports from stations around the world that little by little the promised improvement in operating conditions from the Sun Spot Cycle 25 might be happening. It could be the welling excitement that is making stations hit the airwaves and make CQ calls. It might be co-incidence that other stations were monitoring the HF bands and responded but it might be the atmospherics for amateur radio are slightly improved. Why not see if you can get some QSOs in your log book? At the moment the Australian Health and Government are preparing for a possible pandemic announcement as a result of the novel coronavirus spreading through more countries. This could have even further effect on commercial supply chains than the stringent controls the Chinese government is using to control the spread of the virus. So many of our goods, foodstuffs, medicines and fuel are imported so we could not only see field hospitals trying to plug the gap for beds but non-delivery interfering with normal commerce in this country. It might already be too late for current orders to be delivered in the near future should this emergency be proclaimed. The hobbyists¡¯ sources of parts from south east Asia is already suffering and white goods retailers are advising that certain products will not be delivered until next year. It would be nice to know the future and to plan accordingly but it seems enough for the moment to see green grass instead of earth and even lawn mowing seems less of a chore and more of a beautification project as the warm weather and rain do their work. Still, in my part of the world, the high humidity is difficult for people and the best ambitions are thwarted and jobs wait for cooler and drier times. I am trying to fathom the limited advice and wondering what preparations are needed for a possible disruptive health scare not known to the world since the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918. I trust this passes and things come back to normal and the world resumes turning on its normal axis. Here we are approaching autumn in the great south land and in the northern hemisphere they are celebrating the start of Spring. It is the symbol of the changing season with the animals appearing in the landscape that gave us the amusing expression, ¡°He¡¯s as mad as a March hare.¡± If the weather is suitable you really won¡¯t have to be mad to go out in it with the John Moyle Field Day in the diary for this month. Getting the gear out and operating from a portable location is regarded as experience that can be used at odd times if the circumstances require. So how about clearing your calendar for some not so mad March madness and blow the proverbial cobwebs from your operating skills. If you are so inclined, do a bit of research into who was John Moyle and why we have an event that celebrates his legacy in amateur radio. We continue this week with information about some of the other Sunday ²¹³¦³Ù¾±±¹¾±³Ù¾±±ð²õ¡ We covered the trip out to the Grote Reber Museum and Radio Telescope at Mount Pleasant last week, this week we cover the Mawson¡¯s Huts Replica Museum. This museum is located down on the waterfront on the corner of the Morrison and Argyle Streets and is run by foundation volunteers many of which have been South to the icy continent. There is a wonderful replica of the spark transmitter used in Antarctica to relay messages via Macquarie Island to Hobart and you will be hearing about the effect of this technology in Professor Leane¡¯s wonderful keynote presentation at the Saturday night Conference dinner. The Museum was built to raise funds for the ongoing conservation of the historic building at Cape Denison in Antarctica which were used as the main base for the 1911-14 Australiasian Antactic Expedition (AAE). The museum is a replica in every sense of the word. Heritage carpenters, who worked at Cape Denison on the conservation of the original huts, took hundreds of photographs and measurements which were faithfully used to create the replica. The baltic pine cladding and flooring was sourced from the same region of Scandinavia as the material provided to Mawson in 1911. This material was imported by the same Melbourne merchant that supplied the original expedition over 100 years ago. It is run by the Mawson¡¯s Huts Foundation whose vision is to ¡°inspire current and future generations by conserving and communicating the legacy of Sir Douglas Mawson¡¯s expeditions, other Antarctic Pioneers and Australia¡¯s Antarctic heritage¡±. The tour takes about an hour. mawsons-huts.org.au/ By the way, the Museum backs onto the Lark Distillery shop front and therefore if time permits and you like to sample some award winning single malts or gins! We also have a very special raffle prize which is a wonderful full plate book of Frank Hurley¡¯s beautiful photography from the early Antarctic expeditions. In the course of a year we get to hear many regular voice on the news broadcasts and a number of less familiar ones. The members of ALARA bring a different nuance to the news and sometime we even hear young people when JOTA comes along. Now I have commented that often we see a collection of mature people at our gatherings but we also we also have a number of younger people joining and enjoying the hobby. As time goes on, the news that we record is distributed in different formats for different platforms and different audience segments. For me, an important group of potential listeners are those people in the younger age groups, the ones that have driven the uptake of video streaming and the now ubiquitous podcasts. So many people now have home studios for audio production and from what I see, quite a few amateurs are using studio type audio equipment in their shacks. We talk about training people to ready them for a life in the learning streams we call STEM/STEAM. What I would like, what I hope for is that some of these people who can speak to other young people would join the WIA broadcast team. You may be looking to try your hand at podcasting or even entering into old fashioned radio but you have the opportunity to experience producing and recording material for fellow amateurs. Equipment may be just computer from a phone, tablet or desktop. An external microphone such as the hands free on your phone or a gaming type headset will get your audio ready for email. Your usual app for preparing emails or word processing will let you prepare those interesting scripts that people enjoy. We in the news team like to encourage others to join us and there is a wide range of skills amongst the people whose voices you hear each week. Bye for now and 73s from the Redcliffe and Districts Radio Club VK4RC. ------------------------------------------------------ Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. As I think we may be getting overwhelmed with all the stories concerning corona virus, I also think we must consider the tasks that are ahead for us as members of clubs and as individuals. As whole countries have gone into lock down and events where people congregate are being cancelled it is the right time to consider what actions we should be taking too. We know that the nasty little virus can survive on surfaces once it is breathed out by people who are infected. Apart from the use of soap and water to thoroughly wash hands with the alternative of hand sanitiser there are things like ensuring surfaces are cleaned. This is not only food preparation areas but all surfaces that people might touch with their hands. Seating, desk tops and door handles are all items that deserve, rather demand the disinfectant spray over. Maybe we can ensure that boxes of paper tissues and waste containers are strategically placed around areas where people meet. Maybe we can follow the example from the White House and space the seating at arms length to limit chances of cross infection. As the figures from overseas suggest the people who are the most susceptible to covid-19 disease are the age group over 70. People with compromised immune systems are also of great risk and these are matters we should consider when planning our gatherings, meetings and other events. The positive in the situation is that if we are required to self isolate, providing we are in good health, otherwise, and in good spirits, a fortnight locked away at home is an opportunity for doing things like operating, completing projects and indulging in some unobstructed amateur radio luxury. If the indications from China are correct, many of the delivery issues should soon be lifted and production returned to normal as the impact of the virus wanes in that community. As we endure a strange phenomenon called a pandemic, some of us may be able to enjoy some fresh operating times. We can trust that those we love and care about remain safe and healthy as we do our best to protect each other. I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you? |

I have lived through sun spot maxima and sunspot minima but this is the first time I have had to live through a pandemic. With events and venues closing around the country and around the world it seems that we are fortunate to have created a space where we not only protect ourselves but can indulge ourselves in a favourite pastime. The severity and the brutality with which this health issue has been dealt with is going to effect the world for years to come. The businesses that will close and the people who will lose their jobs are what the US military dub as collateral damage. The way in which the business will continue and countries will recover will probably remind us of the austerity following the end of World War II. With that apparent barrel of gloom, we should remember that we are on the beginning of Sunspot Cycle 25 and for long wave and short wave operators this bodes well for interesting and enjoyable conditions improving in the future. Should we have to perform the ¡°self isolation¡± routine, it will be like slipping into our favourite comfortable clothes and relaxing as the meme on social media has put it, ¡°amateur radio practising self isolation for years.¡± That is to say, the area we designate as the shack predates the man cave of more recent times and the shack is a place of familiarity and stimulation or what we want it to be at any given time. I certainly haven't heard the hooves of the four horsemen of the apocalypse and I certainly haven't seen signs of an impending cataclysm regardless of the state of supermarket shelves. What we need to remember is that scientific knowledge has never been in a better position to conquer this microbe and some of the brightest minds are already following leads on how to limit and then defend humanity against covid-19. This is part of the reason that we pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics as learning tools to improve the world and conquer threats. We hobbyists have the luxury of chasing DX, learning more of how bits of our stations work and amongst all that, making observations about how the world works as far as the electromagnetic spectrum is involved. Some of us will have to make the sacrifice of staying out of the daily grind to treat an illness or wait until an all clear is given. How hard will it be to turn the rig on, and with a clear conscience, play radio? This is an opportunity and as the mental health experts tell us, involvement in activities that we enjoy can prevent becoming stressed when life seems hard. Keep well and until next time¡. Keep well and until next time.. The world has been changing every day and more people have to live with a new reality. Maybe you are still working, working from home, or are self isolating or like lots of people following a basically normal routine but staying away from people as often as possible.
?One thing that seems to be taking hold amongst some amateur operators is the formation of small local nets which allow people to check in and let others know they are engaging in a hobby that lets them also check on friends. There are reports in the general community that people are getting more stressed, mentally, as these rapid changes occur. One noted mental health expert made the observation that people are not just anxious but some are afraid. Anxiety is worry ?about what might be but fear is because of what is real.
?I think this idea of supporting each other is part of what we grew up with, the Aussie spirit, if you like. Before we become too glib, people around the world are doing these kinds of things as they find ways to be supportive as well as locked down.
?What we can promote is the social distancing that radio gives and what a safe and clean pass time it is. The way we operate on air is generally more welcoming than many of the things I see on the internet would suggest. A regular net provides a marker in peoples¡¯ routine that they can use to go about their day. A regular net also takes some of the communications stress away from the internet whilst it remains analogue. ? ?We as individuals can start a net to serve our own region. It is probably best to limit the number of call-ins so a clear amount of time can be devoted and the whole thing doesn¡¯t become unwieldy. We don¡¯t have to be a great contester giving 5 & 9 reports at 3 every minute. We just need to be someone who can operate a radio in a friendly and conversational manner. There don¡¯t have to be repeaters as simplex will work well on most commonly used bands. Sometimes all that is needed is a simple CQ ¡°my area¡± to get it started. Other means can work to spread the word and get people joining.
?Rules, well there shouldn¡¯t be too many other than to ensure people get logged in and get to speak before the net ends. If they wish to continue afterwards, that is good too. ? ?If there is anything that we can do during this COVID-19 period, it is to keep ourselves healthy and find the best enjoyment or relaxation we can. Just like different programs to support our military veterans, we can support our fellow amateurs doing what we enjoy.

The new normal is descending like a summer fog shrouding the world before COVID19 in a vapour of memory. The world has changed and the broadcast news and speaking topics centre around the changes to what we can safely do and the numbers of those who no longer have to care. The world will be a smaller place as more people leave it and it will be a different place for those of us left. These are the givens as our leaders in so many fields race to find solutions to issues that are real and modelled by some arcane pieces of software. The best knowledge that so many have is that gathered daily and entered into the models. Like the weather forecasters, the best knowledge is that yet to come. The certainty is currently that slowly the store shelves are refilling with the necessities of daily living and even those things bought, shipped or squirrelled are coming back. We have food and shelter and for the most, income and for visitors, living amongst us, when their saving have gone the prospect of destitution. This is just to remind us that the solutions are not perfect and improvements can be expected to come in the future. So as we all adapt to this new normal, I have noticed a few items which may titillate the restricted lifestyle of a radio amateur. If you enjoy YouTube you will be pleased that the Radio Society of Great Britain has released talks from the 2019 annual convention. If you enjoy the homegrown, our own prolific writer and video maker Peter Parker, VK3YE, has new material for us to enjoy as well. This past week there have been reports, not only from VK-land but North America and the United Kingdom that some nice openings are happening on 10m. We can have some armchair learning with video-casts and some excitement playing on the HF bands. From Townsville, there was a nice story about the local amateurs preparing to resurrect the ANZAC spirit for this years ANZAC Day commemoration. On April 25, there will be no marches and gatherings this year but we, the radio operators can join in activities which show our past has not been forgotten. Brush up on the CW and learn how to tune up on AM and join the activity, this year. If all the posts that I have been seeing are an indication, there are going to lots of spruced up shacks and stations as a result of the pandemic lockdown. If conditions continue to improve, we will have an amazing start to the 25th Sunspot Cycle. I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think....how about you? When you are living the great social isolation and you seek a little excitement there is no better way than taking the ride-on mower out of the shed and putting the mind on autopilot. One of the news broadcast team was enjoying the cyclical thrill of rotating his yard, this past week, when he was brought cruelly from his reverie. Around the hour mark of smelling freshly hewed chlorophyll, the steed not only gave off exhaust fumes but started belching flames like a barbecue that has was doused with water. It was a close encounter with the local fire brigade who performed the final rituals and left a black patch of earth and blackened metal remains of an afternoon disrupted. I can safely say the photographs were good in telling the story and the rider is safe and looking for an old fashioned scythe to finish the lawn whilst waiting for a replacement herbivore. (Gee thanks Geoff! Photograph attached and I should have asked YOU to write my insurance claim - HiHi..Graham VK4BB...Editor.) Now however, if you are looking to sit an amateur radio assessment under the new pandemic restrictions, the Australian Maritime College has released the details for remote supervision. At the moment, you must be at least 18 years old and have photographic ID. To see the whole details go to the AMC website and look under amateur radio. In the past year, the meeting app, ZOOM, has gained popularity in allowing several people to take part in on-line meetings. It has been shown that ZOOM is an efficient tool with the usual caveat that the internet speed must be adequate. Lots of radio clubs have started replacing the now banned face to face meetings with the convenience of cyber technology. Last week numerous reports were published showing that ZOOM meeting videos could be video bombed or saved and posted to other sites. In other words, there are possible serious security issues for users who do not follow the security instructions that come with the app. The ZOOM publishers have issued updates and it is an easy matter to now establish password access to a meeting. As our need to remain isolated is going to remain for the next few months, at least, it makes a lot of sense to ensure we can enjoy the best means of contact for social events whilst keeping the content private. For once in our lives it is important to read the instructions. Whilst COVID-19 casts a wide shadow over the world, the reports are that more stations are appearing on the bands. This is good for the hobby and if we maintain the usual courtesy in our on air activities we can be assured we all enjoy a pastime like no other.
