(vk4acc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. In my part of the world it is out with the wet weather gear and the forecast suggests that about ? of the state will have the same experience. It seems that our weather watchers are working within a new attitude where the administration wants the body to be known as ¡°the Bureau¡± instead of the diminutive ¡°the BoM¡±. With the hegemony of thing from the United States it is likely that such a change would suggest our meteorologists could be confused with G-men in suits and packing handguns. I like the ease of referring to the BoM and to speakers of Aussie English there is no adverse reflection on the body and no confusion as to the body. For many radio operators in the southern hemisphere, the Bom provides a very useful space weather service. If you haven¡¯t caught up with it use your preferred search engine or follow the link in the text edition of the news. You will find these materials suit our use much better that reports generated overseas. Sadly the reports started coming in of severe atmospherics during the mid week and the storm activity is expected to last another few days yet. Whilst propagation has been reasonable on HF the noise has been influencing peoples¡¯ choices of activity and modes. If you enjoy listening during times when antennas need to be disconnected, then we are fortunate to have access to plentiful remotely operated SDR receivers to follow operations on air. Then you may be able to access nets on systems which allow internet linking but always ensure that your gear is as protected as possible from nearby static surges. Connections to mains power, telephone lines with metal conductors can all bring the dreaded release of the magic smoke that keeps our electronics working. Replacing modems, computers and other equipment is not a good use of time, in my opinion. So having resigned myself to not going on air during the current weather there is the old fashioned option of using wet weather to catch up on my reading. This has been the long standing standby of people when hoped for activities get cancelled. Find a comfortable nook, select something interesting to read and have some food and drink at hand and enjoy a relaxing period of just catching up without feeling stressed to be doing something else. Too often, people forget what reading can provide as entertainment and instruction. It doesn¡¯t have to be knocking over a potboiler, it can even be browsing the manual of a new piece of gear and fiddling with the controls to see if the instructions are correct. It can be going over some detail of a mode you would like to try or it could be magazines that take the mind to the great outdoors. The idea is to let the mind go free and enjoy a break from routine. It is up to the reader to decide if they want a musical background but whatever you do enjoy the experience. For those who have issues with too much rain, please stay safe.
