Dave was a very active RadioAmateur, a dedicated member of Lions International, a foundation member of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club Inc. and for a while a member of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. Dave was a very accomplished musician and it didn't take much to convince him to belt out a tune on his trusty guitar at amateur radio field days and social events. Dave's Celebration of Life was held on Monday 19th September 2022 at Mountain View Chapel, Guilfoyle Tablelands Crematorium, Atherton. Dave's service was well attended by family and friends plus a strong contingent of TRECians. Dave's dedication to duty with fun and his virtuoso musical skills will be extremely missed. Vale Dave West ex VK4DK & VK4ADW, Silent Key. (VK4ZZ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* CLUBBING GLADSTONE AR CLUB "Radio_Active". Mark VK4XMC ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. This past week has seen perhaps the biggest series of media events that the English speaking and international communities have witnessed with the coverage of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The fluidity of the coverage is a credit to the planning that has been continuing for some years but the technology has been amazing to witness in its results. For older members of the community memories remain of the cinema footage at the beginnings of the second Elizabethan era and then have progressed through monochrome TV to what we saw, this past week. For all of us with an enthusiasm for things electronic we have witnessed major progress in the field. As an aside, there was a certain confusion caused by messages put out that the AX prefix might be used as a memorial to Her Majesty. It was noted that this was contrary to our rule book, the LCDs and an inference was drawn that compliance action was not priority by the ACMA. Apart from the fact that pirate operation would invalidate any claims for contacts submitted for awards it was the fact that the spirit of our pursuit was being called into disrepute that worried many operators. We should not encourage the breach of the regulations under which we are licenced. It can be hoped that no supposedly sanctioned breaches are advertised in future. As a service we strive to be correct in our operations and not place our Regulator in an embarrassing position. For people who have been around some time, the CB heyday was back in the 1980s and many people got their first experience of personal two way radio communications in that time. One group of people who saw benefit in radio were the many who suffered chronic illness and disability. No longer were they depending on the telephone, the landline, for outside contact but with simple commercially available equipment they could enjoy conversation with numerous other people and on HF this could be local and international DX. So where are we today? Are we reaching out to spread the word to people who were once ¡°shut in¡± and displaying what our selection of the radio hobby can offer? It occurs to me that within the terms of NDIS and Homecare packages, good arguments can be presented for funding equipment to sustain social contact and hobby interests. Surely there is an entry point for amateur radio and CB to again become popular recreations in the digitally connected world. Yes, there are plenty of means of messaging via video, audio and text but there is that other perspective that radio brings, the capacity to meet spontaneously. Further there is the mind stretching that learning about radio brings which is quite different to games running on a device and there is the satisfaction of trialling various forms of experimentation. Yes I am biased in favour of radio and amateur radio in particular but isn¡¯t it something to share around? I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* 2022 Social Scene VK4 - Nov 5 Tannum Sands Gathering with Gladstone ARC (vk4zz) VK4 - GOLD COAST HAMFEST Nov 13. @ Country Paradise Parklands TO SUPPLY QNEWS ITEMS:- Send SCRIPT to qnews@... send audio to QNEWS Tips to get MORE out of your weekly newscast on VK4WIA If you would like to submit club news items for inclusion in QNEWS broadcasts, please email your item in text to:- qnews@...
