SWF Solar White Flares !!

Hi all,

New ! SWF, SolarWhiteFlares, is at V1.5 !
A new function cleans the residual whitish zones due to processing and deconvolutions in the core of the flares ! See animation on the SWF page !

Hot glue comes loose if you wet a paper towel in isopropanol alcohol and push/massage it over the entire glob of glue. It will come loose at the glue¡¯s mating surface so it doesn¡¯t melt the glue; it simply pops loose in one piece.

?

You need to use epoxy for this which unfortunately is quite permanent so you need to use some large C clamps? (harbor freight has them very cheap) to fixture the sight to the OTA with the clamps. Get it aligned then clamp in place. Do not over clamp it because once the clamps come loose, if you have them clamped down super tight, the alignment will be off. So try your best to only clamp it tight enough so that it doesn¡¯t move. Once you KNOW it¡¯s aligned properly, then use the epoxy. You ought to watch a couple videos before you use it so you understand exactly what you¡¯re going to do before you do it. Depending on the type of epoxy you use, they have different set times. Some are as low as 60 seconds, others are 24 hours so select something that¡¯s not going to set up too quickly.

?

Wait for other replies before setting off on this. Good luck and keep us updated.

Subject: [LX200-Classic] Problem with broken base of ETX125 finder

?

Hello,

I'm looking for ideas ...

?

As you can see in the photo, the base of the finder broke.

?

I had previously managed to glue it back together and align it correctly using a good dose of hot glue. I had done the alignment during the rather long cooling time. Everything was fine until a very hot day when the ETX was in the sun ... The hot glue softened completely and the finder came off again.

So I can't use this glue with such a low melting point.

I spent a lot of time to successfully remove the glue! I needed a cutter by bending the blade, my fingers, a cloth, a wire brush ...

?

Do you have any ideas for making a more solid repair taking into account that the rough alignment is not easy but must be quite correct all the same from the start to be able to use the two fine alignment screws ...

?

Thanks,

Sylvain

Re: Problem with broken base of ETX125 finder

Good evening,
The RDF is fixed again with QuickSteel epoxy paste!
It was easy.
After a good kneading, it heats up. It's time to glue.
I aimed at a minaret clearly identifiable by its green lighting at about 1 km that I placed in the center of the ETX field and I tightened the mount fully.
I applied the paste around the broken base of the RDF, I applied it well against the tube and a few minutes later, I placed the red dot on the minaret and held in place with rolled fabric.
After 20 minutes the paste is hard as metal and the RDF is very well glued to the tube.

Success!
Here are photos, before and after black nail polish...
Best and thanks for help?!

So when did they start fitting that kind of finder?? I have one of the very early models when it came with a dreadful tripod but? a very nice right-angled finder that sits right beside the main eyepiece.? I can almost look through one with one eye and the other with the other eye.

I hope you managed to get yours mended, Sylvain.

Hi everybody !
Thanks to all !
During that time I found this nice video comparing the brands

BTW a question on the red dot finder : is it possible to adjust the brightness of the dot with the Autostar handle ?
My ETX tube has the red California on it. There is no knob on the RDF.
I did not find this info.

Thanks !

It does have a setting time of less than 5 minutes so you¡¯ll need to get everything aligned quickly.? To a trial mix to judge working time before tackling your scope.

Hi Sylvain,
Good. The idea is when you have it all in place you have a short time to do the aligning and then leave it to set properly.

I am pleased to share the free and lightweight program GOESFLUX (version 0.55) which is now available for download on my website:?

This program will allow you (while using minimal resources on your PC) to:

  • Instantly see the value of solar activity transmitted over the Internet
  • View a dynamic list and record all these values with their timestamps (Local Time, Universal Time, Corrected Time) in text files with no duration limit, which are easily editable
  • Define an activity threshold that triggers an alarm, which can be heard throughout a house, helping you not miss a period of high activity (Flare) without constant monitoring!
  • Watch the color graph of the activity build up during the session.

*** Control of the FireCapture and SharpCap programs was abandoned because the slight time lag between the event and the reception of Internet data meant that some very rapid flares were not recorded. It is now recommended to consider unattended observation sessions with this in mind:

  • Continuous recording of the Sun on an external SSD, with numerous one-minute sequences

  • A 2 TB SSD can allow continuous recording for an entire day if a not-too-high FPS (20-50) is chosen and the field is centered around the sunspot.

  • The price of 1 TB and 2 TB SSDs has significantly decreased and will continue to drop!

  • FireCapture can autoguide on a sunspot for hours or even a day if the sky is clear.

  • Warning! Use a programmable power switch on the telescope¡¯s power supply (cut off around 1:30 PM) if a meridian flip needs to be done in the early afternoon to avoid blocking. In this case, reverse the autoguiding movement.

  • Quickly determine (thanks to the lists) which sequences to keep and which to discard without reviewing them individually.

Future developments aim to automate this sorting process (file deletion) in real-time to allow the use of smaller SSDs or to record at higher FPS.

Who knows, if cloud passage is well managed by autoguiding, this might be included in the sorting process someday :)

I hope you will enjoy using this program (it runs from morning to night at my place!)

Clear skies!
