Facebook QCUIAG group

Hi,
In addition to io, we now have a Facebook QCUIAG group.
It is a closed group and so far a number of QCUIAG members have joined.
If you are on Facebook, please join QCUIAG there.
If you are not on Facebook, or don't use it often, QCUIAG is a good reason to join and it could be the only part of Facebook that you use.
Discussions and images have already begun to be posted.
If you have a website or astronomy blog of your own, then please post that on the? Facebook QCUIAG group.

Hi Sylvain, and all,
Rare poster, long-time lurker. Modified a Toucam, back in t he days. I work mostly with a Canon Powershot SX50 with the CHDK modifications, these days, which, I think, not only qualifies, but deserves more attention within this group.
????????????????????????????????????????????????????? -P-

Thanks I have found the group

Hi Peter,

I'm glad to see that you are still looking at modifications of cameras─good QCUIAG tradition.? I can look up the SX50 but what is the CHDK modification?

I too modified the old Toucam, one bit the dust when the USB chip failed, but the other one, with modification and cooling still works although I seldom use it these days as KCCDTools doesn't work on my modern computers although the old Philips software does.? One strange thing I discovered is that the trick of raising the colour saturation to 100% to show up differences in lava composition doesn't work with my Imaging Source DFK camera nor (I think) my DSLR. I don't understand that─presumably something to do with the colour filters on the chip.

BTW there have been at least 21 others who have joined QCUIAG here since we did.? I don't do a lot of QCUIAG-type work these days but do experiment a bit with different optics.? I wonder what the others are doing.

Best wishes,
Peter

Hi,
I am currently testing two cheap CMOS webcams for mainly lunar imaging, and working with my partner Nicola (she is a brilliant programmer) on AstroDMx Capture for Linux. More details and discussion on the QCUIAG Facebook group. Please consider joining, it is a great place to discuss things and post results. You don't have to use it for any other purpose if you don't want to.

Re: Signing in

Hi Peter,
??? The CHDK mod. is actually a "firmware" mod. to the Powershot line of Canon cameras. In effect, what it does is allow one to access and control many aspects of this line of cameras to a much larger extent than the manufacturer "built in". For instance, the basic longest exposure is 15 seconds, but, via the CHDK system, I can expose for anywhere from seconds to hours, giving me access to phenomenal deep-sky objects, with everything from wide-field to 1200mm telephoto, all through a single, dedicated lens system.
??? Take a look at the system via Wiki, and here's a sample photo I took a while back of an Iridium flare, using the long exposure feature and a fairly wide-angle lens setting...

??? Do I have your attention now?

It is obvious you are not interested in CHDK users.

I was on the Yahoo Group for 6 years. I am deleting myself from this group.

Wow, Jonas!
??? Thanks you for posting this wealth of information. I'm an avid CHDK user, but it has been a few years since I checked in on things there.
??? I will vouch for the fact that it is a great leap forward in Unconventional Imaging, for those that are willing to invest in? the line of cameras that are supported. To be able to take pretty darn good, single-frame deep exposures in color, with good hAlpha sensitivity, and, if willing to spend the time to stack and process a collection of images, or to take time-lapse, or even motion-detecting photos through a lens system that can go from wide-field to telescopic is truly new ground.

Hi Jonas,
??? I see you've listed AstroKam. Are you using it, or just mentioning it? I've been trying, sporadically, to get it to link up with my SX50s, with difficulty. But I'm an avid user of CHDK, primarily in astrophotography, and love it. I use the cameras in regular mode for all of my birding.

Focal reducer with SW 150mm F5

Hi everyone

I thought to get a slightly bigger FoV with the Skywatcher Startravel
150mm/F5 scope. It is already a fast scope, and initial experiments with my
collection of a 31mm reducers were not promising: stars turned into seagulls
and worse.

I took a punt on the 2inch Orion 0.8x Imaging Focal Reducer - it works quite
well. Here is a shot of two galaxies NGC147+NGC185 (Green filter, 4x120s,
minimal processing). Not a great pic, but a great density of stars - and
they are pretty well behaved over the entire frame.

Here is an RGB of M31, which shows a usefully bigger FoV compared with my
previous efforts. M32 and M110 are both in the frame. I have tried to bring
out the inner gas clouds circling the core which are usually burnt out.

SW 150mm F5, 0.8x Orion Imaging Reducer, Atik 460EX mono. Darked and
flatted in Dawn, stacked and initial stretch/gamma in Registax5, processed
PSE10
B filter - 43x60s
G filter - 37x90s
R filter - 102x35s
Total 9480s

Here is a brighter version:

I took a few sighting shots of a couple of other targets, looking forward to
the winter season:

Here is M45, G filter - 13x300s, total 390s. I have been trying to catch
the dust clouds in M45 for years with my old 8bit imager, and never managed
it. Here they pop out in the 16bit Atik - just shows how important ADC bit
depth is:

And M42, G filter - 13x120s, total 1560s. The dynamic range of the camera
is impressive - on the unstretched raws the trapezium is not burnt out and
clearly resolved.

Simon

Re: Signing in

These little Powershot cameras are absolutely amazing. LiveView on PC and remote PC control including lens zoom. I have 2 cameras I got secondhand. I use my SX230HS with the CHDK intervalometer for all night meteor watch. My SH530HS with its amazing 50x zoom lens is able to just about match my 1100D/Nexstar 4SE combo.

Displaying images of equipment and results

Hi,
I would like to encourage everyone to join the QCUIAG Facebook group even if you use Facebook for no other purpose.?
There you will be able to display directly, your results, and be able to engage with other members in discussion about yours and their work.
Clear skies
Steve
PS Many people have a negative reaction to Facebook in general, myself included. However, it does provide a suitable and easy forum for the display and discussion of QCUIAG's work. Moreover, there is absolutely no need to engage in any other Facebook activities, so why not?
