I have to correct my last post. Audio on SSB VHF was a little distorted. I did listen to the recording again.
Also I found out that the gain setting does not work on NFM. So the same could be for SSB

The MA X9814 mic amp in my project has AGC. I did not choose this one, but it was sent to me, because the other one was not available.

Strange... I did use SSB once on VHF with the same gain setting than on NFM (but with amplified mic and low gain). No overdrive there. Ihave V4 with 3.4.1.
