Strange... I did use SSB once on VHF with the same gain setting than on NFM (but with amplified mic and low gain). No overdrive there. Ihave V4 with 3.4.1.
I would suggest to switch to the audio level meter (AUD) (short press power button). When the meter shows around 0 to 4dB I had good modulation.
