Re: Air Head Composting Toilet

Thinking a thicker starboard base might be a better choice . . .? 3/4" maybe . . . for greater support.

The LIQUID TANK?mounts on its own L - Shaped brackets, but also has a compression fitting into the upper AIRHEAD commode URINE exit. The tank needs to be supported, thus the use of STAR BOARD base.
The exhaust hose will fit nicely through the original hole used for routing the waste to the holding tank.

Holding tank will be plugges with 1 1/2 inch quick caps - as recommended by Steve Brodie at the PSC Factory:?

I will post more photos during installation! But looking forward to endless problems with the GROCO HF Pump....

Updating (10-25-2023) NOTE: the FERNCO QUICK CAP is actually QC 1.68 .
See:??for sizing! At first Supply House thought the QC-101 was miss marked; but the FERNCO website has a sizing chart - which provided the correct size for this endeavor!?

Re: Packing gland material?

I usually refer to that as the stuffing box! Another senior moment!

Re: Packing gland material?

Ah that packing gland! Sorry, all my PSC boats have been migrated to PYI Shaft Seals!

Those who continue to use the stuffing box, generally go with the Teflon impregnated cord¡

Re: Packing gland material?

This video shows what I was thinking is involved, I may have used the wrong terms, I mean the stuffing box and the flax or newer material that goes between the two nuts.

Re: Packing gland material?

Lisle,
NOTE: While changing the gland, the Factory also recommended swapping out the DELRIN bushings? at the top and bottom of the rudder shaft - they were definitely in need of replacement.

I have the Sheel Keel and here is a photo of how I had to lower the rudder shaft to change out the packing gland.
I am not sure, but I recall I also had to possibly take tension off the steering quadrant .....

Here is a photo of the rudder position required to change out the gland. If you think about it; there is an emergency steering? access port in the cockpit and the rudder shaft is engaged there.

Wheel and full keel.?

I thought it was possible to lossen the nut and repack with new material, didn¡¯t realize it would require substantial work you describe.

Thanks,

Re: Shore power inlet

There was a really good article on stranded wire used in non cramping terminal devices.

Wire strands compress and then vibration causes the strands to shift and gradually loosen.

A ferrule is a crimped-on copper terminal that provides a solid end to the wire for clamp-on terminals in battery chargers, AC inlets , etc.

Those are the steps necessary to change the packing gland.
It is the reverse order to reassemble.

Do you have the deep keel or the Sheel keel? Boat has to be up high enough to drop the rudder.

Lisle,

I replaced the packing gland in Intuition (1990 PSC 31) in 2017.? Acquired a new Packing Gland (Hose) from Pacific Seacraft factory.
If memory serves: it required removing a thru bolt from steering arc and rudder shaft. Removing the supporting bronze shoes and dropping the rudder shaft low enough to affect the gland exchange.

Re: Alternator Upgrade

Jus an update on the alternator upgrade: I have purchased a Balmar? Series 60m dual foot, 100 AMP alternator (J10 Pulley)? with the Balmar 814 external regulator.
Also purchased the Balmar/Altmount surpentine pulley kit for our Yanmar 3GM30F; will be installing in the spring.

Shore power inlet

Just wanted to remind everyone that the shore power inlet needs to be inspected on a regular interval. The stranded wires are subject to corrosion and heat build up.

One thing I have become aware of is the need to install FERRULES on the stranded wire before clamping into the shore power receptical. This aids in reducing loosening of the wire in the receptical due to vibration.

Packing gland material?

Greetings,

I would like to tackle maintenance on my packing gland on my PSC 31 while she¡¯s on the hard and was curious if others have experience with this and specifically what packing material is recommended?

Thanks for your consideration,

Lisle

PSC31 located in southern Florida

Just curious if anyone has a PSC31 located within ~150 miles of Tampa/St. Pete area they wouldn¡¯t mind giving me a quick tour of? I¡¯ve been looking for an opportunity to see one in person. Thanks!!
