Re: Windlass and rode

REMEMBER SAFETY: any time you are working with the chain, never get your fingers between the chain and anything! It will take your fingers off in a heart beat! Let your windlass do the work! Also remember that you never use the windlass to take you to the anchor, you power up either with your engine or sail power.

Re: Windlass and rode

If it is a Gypsy built for both rode and chain, there will be a gripping surface on the Gypsy for the rode. Try letting the chain out and slide the rode into the groove, the windlass should bring the rode in until it hits the chain; then immediately start bringing in the chain. Get the manual for the windlass out, if it is a combination ride/chain Gypsy it should also specify the size and type of rode it is compatible with.

Not sure about type of gypsy. ?Looks like the rode would be loaded on the drum. ?Picture attached (from Polar Dream YouTube)

Re: Windlass and rode

Stu,

Is your gypsy a chain / rode gypsy? And do you have the rope spliced directly to the chain, if so your windlass should route it directly into the anchor locker.

BTW the PS 31 is not a Creelock model though it was designed by Bill Creelock. The Creelock models are canoe sterns?

Re: Windlass and rode

Stu,
I use the rule of thumb “50 ft plus double the depth”. ?(Usually). ?200 ft of chain is heavy and expensive.? I compromised and installed 120 ft of chain and 50 ft of rode.? Along with a Mantus bridle. ?- no regrets so far. ?
