tube is dropped, what a pain
ADAM BIRNBAUM
Well the torque tube is dropped. I'm taking a little popsicle break before
I climb back under and start the reassembly and thought I'd give an update. What a hassle. The rear flex plate sleeve was seized onto the rear splines of the drive shaft. The tranny simply would not budge of the shaft. I ended up dropping the front, and used a breaker bar to pry between the rear flange of the torque tube and the front of the converter housing. This exposed the sleeve, which I heavily doused with penetrating oil, and lightly tapped a flat head screwdriver into all three chuck slots of the sleeve to try and spred the sleeve apart and loosen its grip on the drive shaft splines. Using two jacks, a cooler, and a milk crate I was able to get the tube pretty much in a straight line with the tranny, and yanked forward on the tube like crazy for about 30 seconds. She finally let go. I'm tempted to use anti seize on the reassembly, but I'm concerned that this might contribute to slippage in the driveline and the dreaded thrust bearing failure. The torque tube is definitely shot. I'm relieved that the Porsche shop's diagnosis was correct. With the tube out, and spinning the drive shaft the rear bearing is definitely making a grating noise. The rebuilt tube is dead silent. It's interesting the effect the torque tube has on the sound of the bad bearing. I have a whole new understanding of how those bazooka sub woofers work. :) Admittedly, its a killer closing this thing back up with the front converter bearing staring right at me, but I was committed on doing a quick repair so I could race. No time for this "while I'm there I'll replace" stuff. Converter bearings and seals will have to wait for another day. I'm glad that I'm at the half way mark, I may actually get some sleep this week. :) -Adam |
Adam's band to play June 24th
Adam Birnbaum
Okay, by popular request here are the details:
My band Dreamcatcher, is playing at Delmonte's Sports Bar and Grill at 9:30pm on Saturday night. Delmonte's is at 100th and Pacific Ave in Tacoma. Take I-5 to Hwy 512, which is a little south of the Tacoma Mall. Hop on 512 East, toward Puyallup. Take the Pacific Ave Exit. You want to go north on Pacific Avenue, so I think you have to take the clover leaf. If there is no clover leaf, turn left on Pacific Avenue. Delmonte's will be on the right about 10 blocks down. Cover is $3 at the door. If you would like more info about my band, our website is at www.DreamCMusic.com. We just completed an 11 song CD which I must say is pretty cool. The music has three part harmony, acoustic guitar, bass (me), and drums. Very easy to listen too. See ya there, I'll be the one with (torque tube) grease stains on my hands. -Adam |

I guess if I really want to push you over the edge I could let you know that I'm also training to take my second degree black belt exam in October. (Any other martial art practitioners out there?) Can you say "time management?" I also have a very wonderful, supportive, and understanding wife. As far as the tranny rebuild, I guess since my tube arrived two days early, I don't have any excuses do I? :) -Adam ---------- From: midlman@... |

Hey Ray,
Thanks for the kind words regarding the event organization, etc. Really, its my pleasure to set these things up, and it doesn't take too much time once you get the ball rolling. As far as the cost factor is concerned, I really want to keep these events affordable and within a budget of about $50 whenever possible. I don't ever want to be in a position where I start taking for granted those folks that come from long distances to join into our group. They drive, some up to five hours each way, have to pay for gas, make arrangements to spend the night before, basically alot of things that I don't have to worry about if I plan the event. Kind of selfish, but hey, it works for me :). At any rate, everyone contributes, whether its by making efforts to drive long distances, or helping me with last second details. I figure if I chip in a little extra to make the event more special for me, it ain't no big deal. Just my way of showing appreciation to everyone who takes the time and makes the effort to show up and participate. Have fun at the Cirque! -Adam ---------- From: rhenson <rhenson@...>have to keep us posted on when and where you play. Also please let me knowwhat the final bill comes too on the t-shirts and stuff. Hey Oscar,
Good luck to you, I'm sure you won't need it though. It was great to meet you and your chiffon white beauty at the Dyno day. Hopefully you'll check into this list or rennlist from time to time once you get situated. I know a lot of the locals here are heading down for Devek Day, maybe you'll see them there. Hey Adam,
Wow WOW, first-- family with two kids, second- full blown practice in Puyallup, third- working on car through the night, fourth- race motorcycles, and now you have a band playing gigs across Tacoma!!!!! And to top it all off you organize all the Pac NW 928 Events Man-- Simply Amazing!!!.. Wow is all I can say, you make me feel guilty, I can't even find time to vacuum out my car. I am in AWE. Like the other listers said, just give me a shout if you need a hand, but given your track record somehow I think you'll get it done with time to spare (maybe rebuild the tranny while you're there) ;-) By the way, where is your band playing? Shark drag update
Adam Birnbaum
Hello fellow sharksters, here's the final info on the shark drags set for
Sunday, June 25, 2000. Entry fee $25 payable at the gate. Gate opens at 7am. When I first called SIR about 2 months ago, I was told tech started at 7am. When I called 30 days ago, a different person said tech started at 8am. Today I called and a third person said gates open at 7am, tech starts at 8am. It's your call on when to arrive, I think I would shoot for around 7:30am just to be safe. None of the persons I spoke seemed to confident in their time estimates. I'll try to be there at 7am. If possible, I will park on the shoulder just before the entrance to SIR. If the cops don't chase us away, maybe we can congregate there until everyone shows up, or at least until about 15 minutes before tech closes. If I can't wait on the shoulder, I will try to set up an area in the infield for us to set up camp. If I don't have my shark, I may not be allowed into the infield so I won't be racing. In that case I will keep my eyes open for the first shark to come in and maybe I can hijack a ride into the pit area. Sorry, I haven't received the bill on the shirts yet, so I don't have a final figure for the other expenses, but I'll eat whatever goes over $25 a head. (That's $25 over the entry fee for the uninitiated) Directions from I-5: 1) Take exit 142-A onto HWY 18 East toward Auburn. 2) At around the 7 mile mark you will drive over a green metal bridge and Hwy 18 will start to head up a long hill. 3) As you approach the top of the hill, you will see signs for SE 304TH ST / SE 312TH ST. This is your exit. The exit is right at the 9 mile mark. 4) Take a left at the "T" junction at the end of the offramp, which is SE 304th ST. 5) Take your first right which is the entrance to SIR. (There is a big sign) You should see me on the shoulder just before this last turn in either my Black '88 S4, or a silver blue integra. NOTE: Upon leaving SIR you will make a left back onto 304th. DO NOT take the first right (the way you came in). This is the onramp to Hwy 18 EASTBOUND. Just stay straight after you make the left out of SIR. You will cross over Hwy 18 and see the onramp to WESTBOUND Hwy 18. If you are coming from I-90, 1) take the same SE 304TH ST / SE 312TH ST exit. Sorry I didn't do a mileage count from I-90. 2) Take a left off the offramp. 3) You will cross over the Hwy 18 overpass. 4) Take the first right which is the entrance to SIR. You will see their big sign. If you want to get back to I-90 after the event, DO take the first right after you make the left out of SIR, which will put you onto Hwy 18 Eastbound. I am really getting psyched to see everyone there on Sunday. I just got the news that 928 Int'l just shipped my tube today. Looks like the tube will arrive thursday at the earliest. I will definitely be pulling some long nights to do the re-install. Just a word of warning that I may be in sleep deprivation mode on Sunday. If anyone has any last minute questions, feel free to post to the list or contact me directly. On the day of the event, if it appears that 1) I am expecting you, but you will not be able to make it, 2) I am not expecting you , and you are able to make it, or 3) if you will be delayed on the day of the event, please call my cel number (253)229-8610 and let me know. As far as what to bring, I'm bringing my DE stuff, which is a toolbox, folding chair, umbrella, air pump, white shoe polish, junk food, and some pop. If anyone has access to an EZ UP or one of those Pop Up portable shelters, it would be great to have as either shelter from the sun or rain, weather depending. See everyone Sunday, Let's go STUTTGART AIR FORCE! -Adam Birnbaum '88 S4 A/T |
Have a great time, All
Have a great time at the drags this weekend, you all.
Wish I could come along but I have had my entry into CARS for the Gamblers Run, down in Elko since before this local event was thought of, so... Just for an update on MY car. It is down at Deveks for a brake upgrade and a bunch of other things. Stuff wears out when you have fun using it, as I am sure Adam is finding out. I had a bad vibration, probably caused by my car going into "limp-home" mode during my last event, the hillclimb at Bogus Basin. GTs have another "safety circuit" that shuts down half the motor when the temps are different on each bank of cylinders, or when the EFI computer gets an off spec reading from some other sources. Supposedly this is so that the cats don't fill with unburned fuel and ignite, like I think may have happened once or twice in the past. So while bumping the rev limiter at full load, the motor went onto 4 cylinders, sending some bad vibes through the drive line and breaking something else. Have not found out what, yet, though the bolts holding the guide tube behind the clutch were backed out and laying in the clutch cover. While looking around for that vibration, we found that the wires were shorting together for the plugs, and one of the coils was intermittently cutting out, which may have been causing the relays to shut down half the motor. Then we found the belt was showing cords, and the cam gears are getting worn, so...and while in there, a water pump, of course. All this took longer than expected, so no hillclimb at Virginia City last weekend, but should be done(except for the new brakes) for this weekend. Then the brakes, but of course, the Kinesis Super Cup 17" rims will not fit over the Big Reds, so anyone want to buy a set of those? The custom Oliver rods for my new motor were shipped from England last week, so that is finally going to be the last thing needed for the new motor. Maybe by Aug. for Thunderhill. Anyways, have fun at SIR. Don Hanson |
"Purple people eater" to race on 25th
Adam Birnbaum
Hello everyone,
I had the distinct pleasure to meet Bobby "GT" on friday, at Red Robin over lunch. Rob Fossett was kind enough to drive me so we could arrive in fashion. Bobby's GT is awesome, purple color and all. The boy wonder not only wrangled an excellent specimen of our breed, but at the killer price. With luck such as his, I'm tempted to postpone the Shark Drags, get this boy on a jet to Vegas, and bankroll him at the tables for a couple nights. I'm sure the return would be great. On an even higher note, Bobby has agreed to join the ranks and race his GT. Maybe I could at least get him to buy me a lottery ticket on his way out. It was great to meet Bobby in person, he is true to form as a shark owner in both knowledge of his shark (the GT is NOT his first) and his enthusiasm. Besides, at age 23, he's on his second shark, and its a GT. Wow, that's says alot right there! I will be calling SIR again today just to firm up dates and times, and will be driving out to the gate today to make some detailed driving instructions. I haven't received the tubage yet, hope its on the way. -Adam |
Re: "Purple people eater" to race on 25th
Let me extent my great thanks to Adam for the kind words. it was indeed a
pleasure to meet him also, and thanks to Rob for driving him out and joining us for lunch. as for the Vegas trip, all i have to say is: when do we leave?!! heck i'll even trade you the lotto ticket for the trip! now isn't that nice of me?? just kidding Adam, actually the last time i went to Vegas, i lost my shirt. in a night club (woohoo). not really, i ended up broke. i'll see everyone out at the track on Sunday. take care until then. hope the torque tube get back in by then. ] Bobby '91 GT |
Re: 87 s4 alloys
ADAM BIRNBAUM
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello again Michael,
?
I dug out my 928 International catalogue, and it
lists 7x16 S wheels for $935 new, $150 used, and the 8x16 S4 rear at $935 new
and $300 used.? So it looks like to buy your wheel set used from 928 Int'l
you'd be parting with about $900.
?
That should give you a ball park if you choose to
sell you wheels. So are you looking into doing an upgrade?
