Actually both Devek and 928 Int'l rebuild their A/T tubes with the extra
(third) bearing. As far as my timing goes, Yeah I know.

I'm going to put the shark up in the air tonight and see what I can see.

I got the verdict from the local Porsche Dealer, they said my whirring

They gave me the estimate, $2.9K which included 15 hours of labor. I
asked
how much of that was the tube, $1.9K. I jokingly asked "Is that with or
without my PCA discount?" The (new) service manager wasn't too amused.
I
then asked if it would be possible for me to supply a rebuilt tube, one
that had an extra bearing and would actually be better than the stock
replacement. He said he'd check and get back to me.

The phone message left with my secretary? "Can you pick your car up
tonight?, we have limited garage space."

I guess they don't install rebuilt tubes.

I picked my car up afterhours, at around 7:55pm. As I pulled up, there
was
a salesman walking around my car, checking it out. As I stepped out of
my
wife's 4Runner, I told him I'd give him a good deal on the car. He said
"Oh no, the car is beautiful, but these old All Wheel Drive models are
very
difficult to sell."

I couldn't help but smile as I left "Old Shit for Brains" admiring my
car
and went in to pay the $38 diagnostic fee to have the dealer tell me
something I already knew.
It would have been nice if the service manager was upfront with me when
I
dropped off the car and basically told me "We have no intention on doing
the repair that you are asking an estimate for, unless your are stupid
enough to pay 4x the amount for parts, and double the time for labor".
I
would have gladly paid my $38 then and there for his honesty and not
wasted
everyone's time.

When I got back out to my shark, the salesman was still there. I fired
it
up, whirring sound and all. The salesman got that weird expression like
he
had just swallowed something distasteful while being constipated. I
rolled
down my window, and piped up to the salesman, "front wheel drive is out,
I'm gonna fix it myself", and pulled out.

I'm going to kick around where I go from here. The shark drags are on
the
25th, and I don't think I could pass tech with the whirring sound. I
guess
I could tell them I've got a gear drive or something. I really want to
do
the repair myself, but I don't think I could complete it in two weeks
time.
So, if I want to drag race, I need to take it up to Seattle and pay a
reasonable price for the repair. Decisions, decisions.

If I'm lucky, when I go to check the crank end play in the bell housing
this weekend, the sound may go away. Ray Wach had stated his shark made
a
similar noise until he released the static load at the flexplate. I'll
keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for listening,

Adam,

It's too bad that Tom no longer has a 2nd shark to share for the shark
drags! (You'd have to check the tires first, anyway. ;-) Wow. $1,400
profit on a $500 torque tube!

BTW, there were still some pleasant sights at the DE this weekend, though
short a couple 928's. A few 911 turbos pouring it on coming into the front
straight with *real pronounced* lift-and-squat as they upshifted <grunt>.
What a garish sound they make! And a 996 or two going by whisper-quiet.

Just that it APPEARED to be safe and wasn't leaking fluids.

Re: Whirring sound = torque tube

All I can say is Porsche dealers are uppity pricks, I mean 3 grand to fix a
torque tube? what dealer was it Barrier??? Akers seems to be pretty good i
had my 88 up there when the are went out and had the belt tensioned. Denny
said the air was electrical and sent me to another shop and charged me 100
for the adjustment...he has a pretty good rep with porsche owners in seattle.
And it really pissesd me off when they stick you with the labor and then have
the need for the triple mark up on the parts...

Hey Ray,

I've cc'd this response to the list just to update everyone.

The shirts are at the printers as we speak (type?). Nicknames will be
printed on them. I've been told that the arm graphic "Stuttgart Air Force"
may have to be reduced slightly as it was a little too tall in my original
artwork.

They should be pretty cool.

Hi Adam,

How are the T-shirts coming? Have you decided to print names on them?

Thanks for the input Calvin,

I don't think the tube has degraded that far. (Yet!)
Ray Wach on Rennlist said he had a similar problem, and got rid of it by
releasing the stress built up inbetween the tube and the engine. (Loosen
collar, re-torque).
The shop said it was the torque tube, but wouldn't install an aftermarket
rebuild so I'm checking other options.

Adam: If the torque tube is the problem( the bearings inside) you should
feel
the vibration in the shifter or some type of vibration from the bearings
going out.

Hey Rob,

I do remember your fried torque tube. Mine is more of a whirring sound
compared to the "ball bearings in a blender" sound that I remembered your
shark making. So does the $900 include parts?

Adam,

If you remember, my tube went out last summer. I tried to do it myself but
found it very difficult without a lift. The problem is that the rear end
must
come out, and to do this you need to support the car in the air, with the
axle free to role away. I could not find a secure way to this without
worrying about the car falling off the stands. For me it was worth paying
the
$900.00 or so to have it done. If you decide this is a better option,
Denny
Akers at Akers Foreign Auto in Seattle, does great work. I highly
recommend
him. They did mine in a day. They also replaced the front and rear
bearings
and serviced the trany at the same time, which I also recommend.

Calvin,

My torque tube went out and there was no vibration in my gear select boot.
Just a loud humm under the car
