Fw: The threats posed by Privatizing our Career Development Program
----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Leslie Smith <lplato.smith@...> To: kristen Pursley <kpursley@...> Sent: Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 03:10:04 PM PDT Subject: The threats posed by Privatizing our Career Development Program Kristen Please forward to group. ? Is your California career college, trade school or training program legit? calmatters.org California has 1,975 FOR PROFIT Career Colleges Of those, 1,164 are LICENSED by the State AND, 1,359 have VIOLATIONS. The move towards using STATE TAXPAYER dollars to privatize our Career Development Programs is an absolute threat to upward mobility, access, opportunity, and, in fact, our economy. We need to fully fund the California adult ed, community colleges, CSU and UC, so that this no longer is the reality facing California’s adults! UNBELIEVEABLE. Social Media Updates Upcoming FACCC Events Governor Newsom Unveils Master Plan for Career Education After months of anticipation, Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled the Master Plan for Career Education at a press conference at Modesto Junior College on Wednesday. According to the Governor, this plan will connect workers with high-paying jobs through better state coordination, investments in credit for prior learning, and career passports. If this sounds familiar, it’s because the Governor released the original framework last December at Shasta College, and he included over $100 million in funding for this in his January budget proposal. 2025 FACCC BOG Election Underway Voting Deadline: Wednesday, April 30 As a valued member of our organization, we want to remind you about the FACCC Board of Governors Election, which is open now through April 30. Pell Grants and federal aid funding for this term are being distributed, and FAFSA processing for fall is on track. Still, concerns are rising due to significant staff cuts and Trump’s executive order to shut down the Department of Education. UC and CSU leaders say they expect no disruption to student aid. However, they’re preparing contingency plans in case federal delays do occur. FAFSA applications are rebounding after last year’s rollercoaster of a rollout. Still, some students from mixed-status families are worried their FAFSA data could be used for immigration enforcement purposes despite federal law prohibiting it for such use. In light of these uncertainties, we urge our members to take action by using our action alert to tell Congress to protect and expand educational funding. Now is the time to advocate for the resources that keep college accessible and affordable for all students. Student Visa Revocations Leave Colleges Scrambling College officials nationwide reported a wave of student visa revocations, most of which have only been discovered using the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). In many cases, those who have lost their student visa have also found they have lost their legal status to remain in the country. Previously, it was common practice for international

OAEF - sad news
Hi Older Adults Education Forever members, I am very sad to report that our member Cynthia Eagleton passed away last week. Cynthia was involved in the unsuccessful fight to preserve state funding for adult school Older Adults programs when the state reorganized adult school funding in 2013, and she never gave up. She designed our beautiful OAEF logo which is on our tee shirts, and she maintained the OAEF Calendar and Resource Page. She was a tireless advocate for adult education, seeking solutions to climate change and much more. She will be greatly missed, but her work lives on. Kristen

Fw: Superintendent Search Updates
Hi Older Adult Education supporters, For those of you who live in West Contra Costa County, here is some important information about the search for a new superintendent for our district. An online survey is now open; the link is in the email below. This survey is a great chance to raise the issue of education for older adults and point out why it is so important. There will also be a series of in-person community input sessions. The schedule is below. Some encouraging news about the superintendent search: the union for West Contra Costa Adult Education teachers, Adult School Teachers United, was invited to give input on the superintendent search. I thought we would be on a call with all the other WCCUSD unions and would maybe get a chance to say a sentence or two. I was pleasantly surprised that I and one other ASTU member met with a representative of the consultant that is conducting the superintendent search, and we were given a half hour to make our comments. I made sure that I mentioned all the Older Adults programs in West County! So let's keep up the momentum. Also, Contra Costa County commissions appointments are now open, and information and applications are available online. So if you are interested in serving on a county commission, now is the time to apply.
