THe elimination of Basic Skills courses must also impact Adult Education funding, so it should be on their radar as well.

Hi, all.

?

The May revise came out last week and there were no proposed cuts to noncredit older adult programs. Since the budget revise does not look as bad as we were worried about for noncredit, there is not a need for CCCEOA to mobilize at this time, as discussed last week. We¡¯ll keep a close eye on things as they progress, but for now it is looking OK.

?

Since there is not an immediate need for CCCEOA advocacy specific to noncredit older adult programs we will resume with our usual quarterly meetings in the fall with a focus on ongoing advocacy efforts like the CCCEOA Website and Newsletter.

?

If you¡¯re interested, you can read more about the budget here: . The Chancellor¡¯s office has a ¡°Budget News¡± section with good information, too: .

Thank you, all, for your work over the last few months.

Adult Day Sector in Fiscal Crisis ------------------- important to know about

Good article in this month's AARP magazine:

From the article:

CA ranks No. 1 in terms of capactiy to serve older adults in adult day centers on AARP's most recent long-term care xcorecard. But the indistry is struggling: nationally, adult day services dwindled by 11.5 percent in 2020-2021, the AARP scorecard shows, with COVID-10 pandemic closures playing a role.?

Adult Day Centers typically pick up participants at their homes and offer basic medical care, meals and activieis such as exercise and music. they help older adults maintain independence and often delay entry into more expensive long-term care. They also give family caregivers a needed break.

----?

It is important to know about:

1. All the groups, agencies, places that serve Older Adults. We need to understand their services, funding, how we can work together in alliances, where our goals align, whagt their challenges are.

2. The challenges faced by other groups. For example. the pandemic hit Adult Day Centers hard.? We need to think about the impact of the pandemic on older adults - and the attitudes inherent in the larger cultural response. Was there a sort of, "Well, there's old so it's okay if many day or get sick or live in isolation?"? If there was, how might that impact our policy work going forward?? Because beneath decisions lie feelings - sorrow, guilt, worry, fear, etc.? ?It may be that legislators don't want to touch that the issue of serving Older Adults because of the feeling that this was a "neccesary failure" and they don't want that taint on their record or reputation now.?

It's important to be aware of our feelings - have and process them -- and then be aware of others feelings -- in creating relationships with allies, legislators, etc.?

I think in general, in Adult Ed, there is a certain amount of defensiveness on the part of policy makers, legislators, because on some level, they know they effed up and/or really hurt lots of people - even if they feel they had no other choice - or that they made the best choice possible to them at the time - given the thinking and facts of that time.?

When dealing with folks who made decisions that harmed us or others, it's super important to be aware of how THEY are handling those feelings - because they can show up in ways that make it hard to move forward.?

Cynthia

Agenda suggestion: Letter to AARP

Hi Folks,

"AARP Seeks Your Input:? Tell us what goals you think AARP sholuld pursue to improve the lives of people as they age. Your input helps guide our efforts to influence lawmakers and regulators across the country. Send your ideas to policy@...."

I suggest we
1. Send individual emails to that email address
2. Send a formal letter from our group - with multiple signatures - to that email address

Irma Beserra Nunez was able to get AARP's support when she was leading the effort to save CA State Funding for Adult Ed Older Adults classes.

Important to remember: While funding was more or less lost, Irma was able to secure a loophole - where classes for older adults could be state funded if these classes also benefited school age children.

In policy work, such loopholes are extremely important. They are often a beginning place for new efforts to make headway.??

Re: Providers of Older Adults Education and Engagement

Thank you to the Donna to the list!

I will add --- probably later this week!?

Re: Providers of Older Adults Education and Engagement

Under other providers, list private retirement homes/communities, assisted living, memory care: since they all hire teachers and pay them directly to serve their residents for?exercise,?healthy minds and bodies.
These just in my area include, but not limited to:
?Sequoia Retirement Community --Portola Valley, SF, and many others?
Belmont?Village--Sunnyvale, San Jose,?
The Terraces--Los Altos, Los Gatos
Villa Fontana-
Atria-Sunnyvale, San Jose, Walnut Creek
The Forum in Rancho San Antonio-Cupertino
Sunnyview-Cupertino
Rossmoor-Walnut?Creek
Sunrise Senior Living
The Villages-San Jose
Sun City
Morning Star-West San Jose
Westgate Villa
Saratoga Retirement Community-Saratoga
The Watermark at San Jose

The Jewish Community Center-San Jose, Palo Alto, SF. etc. are just like the YMCA.? You buy a membership like a gym club and then most everything--gym, swimming pool, classes, concerts, (except personal trainers, and a couple other things) are included.

While community centers give teachers a % of the tuition paid, and often charge non city residents higher, which doesn't go to the teacher, there are often scholarship funding for those who have a hardship paying.
Senior Centers work much the same way, as do many private high schools, etc.

The truth is there are classes you likely teach going on outside of Adult Ed and our colleges, and I am paid slightly higher than my pay at the Community College.

Good Luck Everyone,
Donna Frankel

As always in advocacy and politics, you don't need to agree on everything to work together for good outcome. You need shared interests leading to shared goals and strategies to reach them. Giving all parties voice in the process to come to agreement on those shared items helps move things along.

Re: How could AI be used to coach seniors on using computers?

Dear Linda,
I listened to the program on KQED as well. I believe that our group should be arguing for access to computer classes/AI
training as essential to our survival in the ever-increasing
technology -dependent world.
Without training, we will be further
separated from the community,
unless you have a grandchild around to help you navigate.
I always joke about wanting to
? Rent a ten- year-old ? to help
me. In all seriousness, I have hired
a retired attorney who deals with Apple products at $100. per
hour to help in emergencies when
I had a deadline and ran into a problem. Not a service I can easily afford on a teacher¡¯s pension!
A topic worthy of discussion and action in my opinion.
