Thank you for calling our office to express your support for AB 811!? It was a tough battle getting it out of the Legislature and now onto the Governor¡¯s desk.? Longevity Report

Hi OAEF

Here's an article -?
?that essentially acknowledges that cultures that are more collective - the focus here in Latino cultures -- have more longevity.?

I think in terms of our work, we can make the case that where collective/cultural/family support is lacking, OA classes make important contributions.

Traditionally, most human cultures centered on caregiving. But as we know, that has been lost in many cultures - and it's definitely been lost in ours - meaning US culture - to greater or smaller degrees.??

I grew up in Southern California. You might have heard of Leisure World - a senior community in So Cal. When they designed it, they didn't plan on folks living as long as they did once they moved in. The trouble was, they created a strong community -- and that led to people to living longer - which meant less real estate turnover - not good for the folks who built LW but good for the people.??

Community and connection are the secret to so much.?

Re: Details for upcoming CFE Metting this Thursday - docs and zoom link

I just re-read what you write here, Robert. Benefits are pro rated based on teaching load-- but it sure beats little to no benefits. Not all PTF want FT work, but they should be paid the same rate per hour and not be treated as 2nd or 3rd class citizens.

?When it is one unified faculty, administrators can't play FT against PTF. One contract, one payscale, limit FT overloads so PT have more classes, job security and academic freedom.

How we get there? We are trying to find a few ethical folks in powerful positions in each and every teachers union, association, Academic Senate, etc. to help us, (CFE --? Campaign for Faculty Equality) make it a reality. Our group has been meeting on zoom nearly every week since we put on a symposium through FACCC on the One-Tier System Dec. 9, 2022. Over 200 PTF (part time faculty) attended and their enthusiasm resulted in CFE, which has been involved in 3 more events to spread our message.

If you haven't heard of Labor Notes, their Troublemakers School and now a Caucus to get there, I will send you that information. With reformers at the helm, the Teamsters and the Auto Workers (UAW) are raising the bar for contract campaigns.

At Labor Notes we often hear from frustrated members of unions that have nothing like a contract campaign¡ªmembers play no role in setting the agenda or building the momentum to win. Union leaders agree not to ¡°bargain in the press,¡± squandering any chance to attract public sympathy. Sometimes the rank and file doesn¡¯t even hear what¡¯s going on until a deal is done.

Now that a better way is on display, I hope we can all file that approach ¡°where it belongs,¡± in the trash¡ªjust like UAW President Shawn Fain?.

It was a stunt, but a delicious one, signaling that some union leaders are finally on the members¡¯ side. Fain also bucked the tradition of opening bargaining by shaking the boss¡¯s hand, and instead spent a day shaking hands with auto workers.

CCAE's next steps on reach out to electeds

Hi OAEF,

As you recall, we in OAEF wrote our own letter to electeds - and LAO (Leg Analyst Office) and DOF (Dept of Finance) --- about the current re-assessment of the Adult Ed System.? CCAE was first to do so and we patterned after them - emphasizing the need to refund OA classes.

?--- updates you on what CCAE's next steps are --- as well as provides some info that this assessment of AE will probably be slow as the state of CA has a lot on its plate that takes precedence.??

I think it's important to read so please take the time to do so.?

Also, if you recognize any names in there --- especially if they are in your area -- you could make contact with them.?

Angela Taylor, director of San Mateo - one of the few remaining adult schools to have OA class - is on the CCAE group working on all this.?

Sincerely,?

Cynthia

COABE partnering with AARP

Hi Folks,

Update on national picture --- COABE - national org serving Adult Ed --- is partnering with AARP to offer classes to older adults. This is a pilot program.?
When advocating for a return to CA State funding for OA classes in CA, we can point out that on the national level, folks see the wisdom in offering and funding these important programs.?

More info below from Sharon Bonney's post - Sharon is head of

We had a great virtual meeting today with our???Work For Yourself@50+ pilot programs!

AARP Foundation¡¯s Work for Yourself@50+ program helps low-income older adults navigate self-employment opportunities. For many, entrepreneurship after age 50 is a necessity ¡ª a way to generate income when traditional job opportunities are scarce and the value of retirement savings has declined. Older adults with limited income can benefit from the new ¡°gig economy,¡± but it¡¯s not easy to find trustworthy information.

Here's to our pilot programs that are ramping up to do great work in this space:
1. Southside Virginia Community College,?
2. Baton Rouge Community College, Dava Prince
3. Northshore Technical Community College,?
4. Project Learn of Summit County, Paul Crosby
5. YWCA National Capitol Area,?
6. Houston Community College, Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives,?
7. The Lucas Center at the College of Coastal Georgia,?
8. Adult Education Center,?
9. Palo Verde College,??and?
10. Buffalo Public Schools, Reggie Garner

Learn more about this exciting initiative:?

Dear Marilee,
So glad you are interested in the meeting info that Donna Frankel sent me!
It¡¯s unfortunate that these issues affect more than one community college --but it makes sense to form larger coalitions and fight the trends!? Stronger together!

Dear Linda,
? ?Thank you for sending the notice about the upcoming meeting on Sept. 7.? I would definitely like to
attend as a member of OAEF and?
also as a member of HEAT, Higher
Education Action Team from CCSF.
CCSF¡¯s concerns regarding tiers
for faculty are the same and it appears to me that forming larger coalitions around this issue is essential if faculties expect change.

Hi Linda,

Our two faculty groups are in my mind working on some of the same issues of pay, working conditions, etc. and thought you and/or someone from your group might like to attend our next meeting. I will get you the URL for the zoom on Tuesday, but out meeting is this Thursday, Sept. 7,? from 10-11:30 am.? CFE is the Campaign for Faculty Equality, and our main thrust is that the community colleges need a one tier system for all faculty, instead of the present 3 tier system.? We currently have 20% full time (FTF) tenured faculty, PTF (part time faculty) who have far fewer benefits, certainly no sabbaticals or fabulous medical, dental, eye care, etc. nor offices, computers, etc. plus teach whatever is left after the FTF select what they want to teach.? Our 3rd tier is noncredit courses for older adults, disabled, etc. and they make slightly more than half what PTF make in for-credit, up to now haven't had paid office hours, nor much of any benefits other than sick leave, and no academic freedom, etc.

By advocating for one tier--all would be paid on the same pay scale based on the amount they taught, all would have proportional identical benefits, all would have some job security--which PTF and non credit faculty don't have at all, and all would have academic freedom.
We have started a major movement with unions, academic senates, and FACCC (faculty association of CA. Community Colleges) all deciding they need to do something to take us seriously, as this becomes a real movement across the US.

Anyway, let me know if you can make the zoom or if someone else from your org would like to be invited to see how we are doing this, where we are going with it, etc.
Thinking of you,
Donna
