Re: Reviews of the Nikon Z6, Z7 vs. Canon EOS R6 Mkii ?

I picked the Z6 and Z6ii because they weren't as high of a pixel count as the Z7 or Z9, which means they are more sensitive in low light situations.

Megapixels aren't everything.

Re: Reviews of the Nikon Z6, Z7 vs. Canon EOS R6 Mkii ?

I¡¯m not in the same skill league, while I love my D810 for detail, especially shadow detail. My recent acquisition of a used D500 has surprised me in many ways.

I feel that each camera has their own strong points and weak points. Thus each is a specific tool in the tool box. If I need high FPS, the D500 rules in my kit with the D700 second. Fast AF will be the D500 and D810. The D700 has a color capture that many modern sensors don¡¯t quite have.??

For many events I¡¯d bring the D810 with the D700 as a secondary. Now I want to add the D500 to the mix which would leave the D700 back in the truck or at home.?

It falls down to choosing the correct tool that is best suited to the job or task at hand. Yes I¡¯d love to have a D850 and a Z9, just not in the budget anytime soon.?

The Z-mount lenses are killer for sure, though. I recently picked up the 135/1.8 and so far I'm thinking it's the best lens I've ever used ¡ª and I have some very good lenses.

Re: Reviews of the Nikon Z6, Z7 vs. Canon EOS R6 Mkii ?

I can't speak to the Canon bodies but I'm curious what you're currently using. After owning all of the best Nikon DSLRs for many years, my mirrorless journey started with a Z6 (upgraded to a Z6ii a couple years later) and now a pair of Z9s. Even with all of the firmware updates, the Z6ii exhibits AF behavior that may be frustrating for users of better DSLRs. It's not incompetent, just kinda weird. The learning curve is longer and steeper than with any other equipment move I've ever made. I'm not sure the same is true for Canon or Sony today.

In virtually every other respect (AF behavior) the Z6ii is really terrific, but in my opinion the #1 reason for a Nikon user going mirrorless is the ability to use the new lenses. They're out of this world good. Of course you can use any F-mount lenses on a Z body with Nikon's FTZ adapter and the performance will be at least as good as on a DSLR (AF requires the lens to be AF-S) or you can buy other adapters to use virtually any other lens on the Nikon mirrorless bodies. It has to do with the Z-mount's wider diameter and shorter flange distance (distance between the lens and the sensor) compared to other mounts, but once people try a Z-mount lens, there's no looking back.

As I just told Zane, I think the new 135/1.8 "Plena" is likely the best lens I've ever used. That's saying a lot since I've got both F-mount and Z-mount 400/2.8 lenses as well as the 200/2. The combination of sharp subject, unprecedented bokeh, fast focusing and light weight in an affordable package is just mind boggling.

I know it's not what you're asking, but if I were you I'd take a look at the Zf and/or wait a short time for the Z6iii to come out, then start slowly building your Z-mount lens arsenal ;-)

Don't forget to check DPREVIEW. They're still around testing and reviewing gear.?
They're one of my top Go To's for gear reviews.?

Another I like are Tony and Chelsea Northrup. They do their reviews on YouTube.

I also like Steve Perry from Back Country.?

There's always Jarid Polin he also reviews a lot of gear.?

I hope these links help and don't confuse you. Buying gear is exciting but, exhausting at times trying to figure out which is the right fit for you.?

"? Final Words

The Canon R6 is a really solid camera. I have no trouble at all recommending it.?R users are going to be jealous of this new camera, despite the loss of pixel count. 5D-loving DSLR users are going to take right to the R6 (and the higher end R5). The R6 is as DSLR-like as any mirrorless camera to date, yet manages to add in all the reasons why mirrorless is the future.

&

One small issue that can't be ignored with the R6 is its price versus its competitors. While there are things the Canon R6 does better than the Nikon Z6 (and upcoming Z6 II) or Sony A7 Mark III, there are also areas where it's only equal or just a touch behind. Yet this is coming at a US$500 extra cost over the competition at current pricing. That extra cost is going to deter a few customers who should really be considering the R6, I think. I'd say don't fall into that mentality, but that's still a 20% tithe to Canon you need to rationalize.?

Personally, I'm going to switch some of the camera recommendations I've been making to photographers asking for advice over to the Canon R6. Particularly if you're coming from the Canon DSLR world, the R6 is the enthusiast camera you probably want (and the R5 is the one you crave). For someone new to photography or looking to buy their first sophisticated camera, the R6 probably gets my nod as the camera of choice for some of those folk, too.?

The 20-24mp full frame mirrorless market is one of considerable choice now: R6, Z5, Z6, Z6 II, S1, S5, A7 Mark III. Canon came out firing with the R6, and I think they're going to steal some of Sony's thunder with it. Game on, boys.?
