thoughts on screen design
3
I have been setting up my screen for my father who has little experince with CNC. Trying to train him as my cnc operator only right now. For this purpose I think less info the better. I would like to see diag screen and other non job related screens become menu items rather than buttons and or pages. His mill does not have spindel on off or rpm checking, nor limit switches. So I left those items out of my design I recently uploaded. Some day we will hook that stuff up,And I can add that stuff back in. His mill is a simple desktop 4th axis machine with no bells and whistles.

CAM Software

I am researching CAM programs like VisualCAM, BobCADCAM, DolphinCAM, Rams3D. I would appreciate any feed back on these or any other CAM program. Basic drawing, stable tool path creation and post processing to Mach2 are my requirements.

New Mill
Well, new for me anyway... I have grown beyond the size constraints of my Taig mill that I have been using (first with Master 5 -then Mach 1 and now 2) and have bought a Bridgeport series II (like Tim Goldsteins "Bridgett"). The Boss 4 control absolutely has to go and I will run it on Mach II. I need to replace the antiquated steppers that are on it with some good servos that will work with Gecko drives - anyone know where I can get some good ones? I think 26 -35 in/lb motors somewhere near 2500rpm would fit the bill.

converting to servo
3
I need to convert the x axis on my big router from stepper to servo I have on hand some of the first rev Gecko 320 drives and nice Wagner{aka Baldor] servos. The encoders have 8 leads. Won't I need a differential to TTL "translator? The encoders are Renco 800 ppr Also, these motors have a 24v normally on brake, do I have to dissasemble them? I was thinking of a second set of switches NC and wired in series with 24v ? Lastly, if I bench tune won't I have to retune under load? thanks Carl

Just a quick question. Is it possible to get M2DocDrafts file to pop up on the Mach2 screen when pressing Help??It shure would be nice to have such quick access to this fine and helpful document. If you do not ask the experts you will never know. joystick question
2
I got a joystick question. The program is setup to use a joystick, will a game pad also work? My reason being that a game pad would make for a better pendant. Example of one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ViewItem&item=2743824977&category=170 this is just an idea, but it would be easy to use the way it is or hack it to a better suited case. Just a thought. Richard Konnen

Challenge For the Software Programmer
3
Art and other software programmers, I've done it again. I spent a countless number of hours developing my Mach2 Lathe and Mill screens in a 1024 x 768 resolution and just as I was near completion I purchased a new toy for my Mach2 machine tool control. It's a real neat Advantech panel mount industrial workstation with a LCD touch screen display and a graphics overlaid membrane keyboard. Now the problem is that it only supports a 640 x 480 resolution so I'm now faced with the possibility of having to reconstruct my Mach2 screens for that resolution. The though of it provoke an idea that maybe it's possible to scale my screens so I'm asking those who are qualified to tell me if that is possible. Servo

Welcome to new Members
2
Thanks to all the new members. We have had 175 members join in just four days. Hopefully this will continue and all the Master5 members will participate here as well as the Master5 List. In the way of updates. I am working on a way to keep the Master5 archived messages as intact as possible. It has been pointed out to me that to improve the space alloted to us by Yahoo, it would be very helpful if all members when they reply to a thread, if they would cut out the prior non-essential part of the post they are responding to. Sometimes there are 4-5 concurrent replies in messages and this is taking up alot of space. Please try and help us with this problem by tidying up your messages and replies to others messages. We want to keep this forum as helpfull as possible and archived for everyones use as long as possible so please help us out. Alan Trest

Mach 7.2 bug bug???
5
Hello gents, I think I found a bug and or I a doing something wrong. Run from here..line#..does not seem to funcation correctly. I goto line number I wish to start from (either typed in the box or scrolled to) and push runfrom here button. Program rewinds itself and starts from beginig. So... I tryed it a diffrent way...Instead of pushing run from here button I just went to my line I wanted to start from and hit the run button. A screen comes up asking location and and safe z. Numbers in boxes had values from line i wanted to start from....Seems ok to me so i hit ok and run. Program rewinds and wants to start from begining of program. My conclusion is that this feature may not be working right. Any thoughts...?

THC !
2
Tom and other torchies, I just finished my THC controller ( Tom Caudles design ), got it installed and made a few trial cuts, WOW, is this thing cool. I cut a small piece of 3/16" plate with about a 1/2" hump in the center and you can watch the torch follow the contour with what seems to be a very tight torch pattern. The boards went together and function just like Tom said they would. I'll try running some bigger projects tomorrow and report in with any findings. Thanks again Tom Todd

Breakout Board
3
I'm building a slightly modified version of the Universal CNC Controller featured in the 1/2003+ issues of the Home Shop Machinist. Last night I downloaded the trial versions of Mach1 and Mach2 - I'm literally awestruck! The programs are exceptional and I've decided to incorporate them into my system (not sure if I'll be running W98 or XP - so I'll have to wait to decide on Mach1 or Mach2). My question - does anyone have experience using the Mach1 or Mach2 software witht the PMDX Breakout Board? I'd like to hear any comments before I decide. Also, when I went to Campbell Design site (linked from artofcnc.ca) I learned that their breakout board was modified to run with Mach1. Two questions - does the pmdx board need to be modified, and does one of these two work better with the Art of CNC software. Again, any comments would be appreciated. Bob Jacoby Florida

re converting to servo
4
Thanks for the replies and advice, see any flaws in my scheme below? condensed version, 3:1 reduction from motor to screws, screws are 2.54 turn per inch needed motor rpm for 300ipm 2286 mount 800 cpr[3200pulse] encoder on screw so pulses per inch travel =8128 Mounting the encoder at screw end means less than 8 ft cable to drive, thanks again Carl

Which post for Mastercam 9 and Mach2?
Hi, just wondering which post works best from Mastercam9 to Mach2? I have read that MPFAN.pst works but are any changes needed? Anyone using this? Thanks Dean

kipwareM
3
I'm a registered user of Mach1 and I'm now onto Mach2. I'm in the process of completing my second mill a 1985 south bend knee mill 10 x 54 with ball screws on all 3 axis for my home shop. running gecko servo drives. I was looking for software that I could use to run the machine in a conversational mode. Although I use vector cad cam from Fred at IMser to create art to gcode. I'm now trying to configure a post in KipwareM program from www.kentechinc.com to match mach1/2. I've made a few basic runs nothing fancy with the program seem real easy to used. just select the type of machine operation, fill in the blanks and out comes the code. Then I just load the file into mach2 and run the part. The software even has a dxf converter that will take the drawing and covert to G code. Just would like to know if anyone else on the list is using this program?

The Mach 2 Manual.
Just for point of reference. I printed it out on my HP 970 series printer. Printed both sides. Then went to local Kinko's and they bound it clear front cover, solid color back cover, and wire binding for "lay flat" open. Cost was $5.35 which included sales tax. It looks beautiful. A friend asked me if I was going to sell it on EBay. No! It's mine! It does look great. Bob
