Repeater Builder RB_STM32_DVM V4 supports M17

Steve Stroh

I just clarified in an email with Scott Zimmerman N3XCC of Repeater Builder, that their version of MMDVM, which they call RB_STM32_DVM V4 (latest) - does support all the same modes as the current MMDVM firmware:

D-Star
DMR
System Fusion
P25
NXDN
M17
POCSAG
AX.25
FM

IE, it’s just another MMDVM device.

The current verbiage on that web page omits
M17
POCSAG
AX.25

But those modes are?supported by the V4 hardware, assuming the version of firmware loaded onto the unit is the latest.

Thus, there is “repeater grade” hardware, and more importantly documentation and support, available to add MMDVM support to many / most Amateur Radio FM repeater systems.

This is really good news for breathing life into tired old, increasingly unused Amateur Radio FM repeaters.

Thanks,

Steve N8GNJ

That's fabulous and great for all of us: users and otherwise.

I tried to stir up some interest in M17 (via the possibility of a repeater running MMDVM) at one of the Amateur Radio clubs in the Seattle area, but I was completely ignored. (They’ll remain nameless.)

One of my plans is for a PR campaign on behalf of M17 to the various clubs that sponsor repeaters in the Seattle area to suggest adding MMDVM to their repeaters.

I hope to do that in time for the “easy mountaintop repeater servicing season” before the snow starts flying in the Fall.

But there are a lot of other things I have to work on before then.

When we eventually graduate to the paid version of , yes.

Until then, no. That’s not a feature of the free version we’re currently using.

A - Not on a reflector. There is one built into WPSD, but you'll need a radio to use it.
2 - The M17-M17 reflector holds one on module C at 1700 UTC on Fridays. The M17-OKC reflector holds one on module A at 1700 UTC on Saturdays. If you'd like to run a net, let me know and I can start an M17 net calendar!
D - There is a PNW channel on the M17 Discord server, but there hasn't been a lot of activity there. Mt. Diablo (MDARC) has expressed significant interest in M17, and we're looking to have a table at Pacificon this year again.

Steve:

I suggest disabling this:

Mailing lists and other club-specific tools are coming, so for now you can email “join [at] m17 [dot] club”.

I did so and did not get a response.

(Or, alternatively, feel free to rewrite that to send interested folks to this email list.)

Thanks,

Re: https://m17.club/ ?

It's not really a forum or anything like that, it's more of a landing page for a possible ARC in the future. This SIG/UG is a better platform for those wishing to keep in touch with the Project and not need to use Discord or Matrix.

Re: Introduction

There was a talk about using Codec2 on D-STAR several years ago at the
TAPR DCC conference.? I have seen the Powerpoint slides for that talk.?
However, any further discussion seems to have stopped since M17 arrived
on the scene.

"Oh. I see. Never mind."

Less seriously, I remember reading that there was a flag in the
D-STAR data stream that identified the CODEC in use. Clearly, this
might be of benefit to those of us who like D-STAR but don't care for
having to use DVSI's IP.

I realize that this does not mean "interoperability!" and that it
would effectively (I think) split D-STAR into "A" and "B" depending on
which CODEC was in use but it's still an interesting possibility.

Problem is, I can't find where that flag was discussed. I have dug up
some D-STAR docs (JARL, TAPR, et al) but not seeing a flag that says
"CODEC".

This beeping any beepers with anyone?

The RB board will work fine on M17, if you are running up to date firmware.? I have one here that I use for M17Client, which has been tested in my repeater setup.? Looks like the Bridgecom repeater should work on M17.

Hi Steve,

Bridgecom sells an MMDVM upgrade for their repeaters that looks to be based on the same Repeaterbuilder MMDVM board I have been experimenting with.? I can't confirm M17 runs on it, *yet* but I do know the firmware with M17 will build and install.

VK3RCQ is operational, around 10km east of Bendigo, Australia.

I run VK3RIR.? Currently on a dummy load until I get the antenna and paperwork sorted, then it will go live.? Both are multimode repeaters (including M17).?

The premier M17 Amateur Radio Club

Where the M17 Project is largely centered around development of the protocol and implementations of it, the M17 Amateur Radio Club (ARC) is a user group focused specifically on encouraging and supporting the spread of M17 repeaters, mobiles, handhelds, and all other use of the protocol.

That sounds a lot like the mission of this email list.

Anyone know anything about this?
