I heartally agree with the last paragraph - the only reason I keep reading what Matt puts out. Marvin I missed #5: 5.? Who is the most well known person you have ever conversed with - not neccessariy when the person was famous? Seamus Heaney was a Harvard professor in 1985, ten years before he won the Nobel Prize for literature.? One of the three guys I shared a house with just off-campus is Irish, and he was tied into the native Irish community in Boston. ?Heaney came by a couple of times, and got into a tussle with another Irish professor in our living room during our St. Patrick’s Day party, where he and the other professor were supplying the music on some strange stringed instruments. ?Another (female) Irish professor broke up the melee by gently singing to them. ? Also at that party was Louise Richardson, a grad student my housemate was dating.? My girlfriend and I were going to double-date with my housemate and Louise at a play in Boston about a psychotic nun, but my housemate stood her up, and the three of us went to the play without him.? Louise was deeply offended by he play and my housemate. She went on and got her MA and PhD at Harvard, and hung around long enough to become a professor, and later the Dean of Radcliffe, leaving in 2010 to become the Vice-Chancellor at St. Andrews, and is now the Vice-Chancellor at Oxford.? She’s been in the news lately over her conservative views, like her statement that students should exchange with those with views they might find objectionable, since ‘higher education is not meant to be a comfortable experience.’ Ed On Friday, August 13, 2021, mrvnchpmn <chapman@...> wrote:

1. ?Do you think employers should reduce the wages of people who choose to work from home on the grounds they no longer have to pay to commute?
There are government health restrictions to take into account by the employers when deciding whether their employees should work from home or the workplace. The transportation is irrelevant.
2. ?Do you think employers should increase the wages of people who choose to work from home on the grounds the employer can get rid of a bunch of overhead?
No, what is wrong with the employer making a profit??
3. ? Do you think face masks are effective in preventing contraction or transmission of COVID?
Yes, it reduces the risk of catching the illness.
4. ? Australia has mobilized armed forces to enforce the mask and stay at home requirements. ?Is the start of an Orwellian scenario?
No, the government has to take these measures to prevent the virus from spreading.
5. ?Who is the most well-known person you have ever conversed with - not necessarily when the person was famous?
It's between the Queen of England with Prince Phillip and Ted Kennedy and all the Prime Ministers of Canada in my lifetime, except for the last two.Amy

Re: MASS PSYCHOSIS - How an Entire Population Becomes MENTALLY ILL
By admiring the Emporer's new clothes. MASS PSYCHOSIS – How an Entire Population Becomes MENTALLY ILLA very interesting video showing exactly what is happening to the world today, driven by the far-left elites with their political correctness, wokeness, cancel culture, critical race theory, ANTIFA, BLM, and constant fear mongering about climate change and pandemics, assisted by the propaganda, mis-information and censorship by the mainstream media and the owners of all the social media platforms. We must all - those of us still capable of rational thought - resist and fight against every aspect of this nonsense. The survival of our society is on the line. In the words of the wise and sensible Stephen Harper: “If it plays out, our societies fail … the adolescent egos of the woke university crowd is not an alternative governing philosophy for any society.” Pat |

1. ?What is the difference between being confident and being sure?
Confidence means feeling sure of yourself and your abilities — not in an arrogant way, but in a realistic, secure way. Being sure is having no doubt that one is right.
2. Are you concerned about getting sick with the Delta virus?
I take all the recommended precautions, but there's always a risk of catching the virus anyway.
3. ? Do you think the existing vaccines are effective against the Delta virus?
You can still get the virus, but if you do its likely to be a milder form if you had had two jabs.??
4. ? ?What do you feel was the greatest accomplishment of your life?
I'll leave that for history to determine.
5. Who is your favorite contemporary author?
I have no single favorite author. I have many so I can't answer this question.Amy

Re: [M-Positive} Second shot: check!
开云体育Congrats Anabel, and glad to see they were 8 weeks apart. New information coming out of Israel and the UK who were ahead of the pack in vaccinating suggests that if the 2 shots were given close together, like within 3 weeks, which is what Israel did, the efficacy begins to fade quite soon. If they were far apart, like 11 or 12 weeks as the UK did, the efficacy so far is not fading. Good news for us here in Canada where we followed the same strategy as the UK, doing only 1st shots when the vaccine was in short supply, adding the 2nd shot much later. My own were 11 weeks apart. In the USA, they did them much closer together and may suffer from a drop off in effectiveness. Here too, in the face of the Delta variant, they have begun to rush them, requiring only 2 weeks between. It's looking like that's a bad idea. 3rd boosters may be required everywhere that strategy was followed. Pat ---------- Original Message ----------

Re: [m-scholars-and-scribes] Re: Friday Five July 23
Please remember these are questions of opinion - not attempts to elicit truth! 1.? What is a scientist. . an entity that investigates it's surroundings to determine what is going on or how things are caused - notably I don't limit it to humans. 2.? Do you think the COVID vaccines are totally, partially or not at all effective at preventing infection? Partially - like most things in the real world results are scattered all over the place without necessarily a lot of rhyme or reason. 3.? Do you think the COVID vaccines are totally, partially or not at all effective at preventing hospitalizations? Probably - certainly enough to justify taking the chance of side effects.? Another question is whether there is an obligation to take the vaccine to prevent being an asymptomatic carrier. 4.? Should parents be consulted before students under the age of consent are vaccinated at school? Absolutely - but like so many other things this common sense idea is ignored by those in charge who think they know better. 5.? ?Do you think there should be a maximum age for government officials and employees? Yes - 60 for government employees below supervisory levels, 65 for all others.? 70 for elected officials to be imposed at the date of their election.? The one exception I would grant is for judges appointed for life.? If they choose to serve beyond their capability there are means of removing them. Sound judgment in practical matters
2. ?How do you differentiate causation from correlation or effect?

No
4. ?How do you decide whether something on the news is real or not?
By double checking with what I believe to be a reliable source.

No, I don't worry about things I can't do nothing about.Amy

1. ?Have you ever been in a position to counsel or commiserate with a woman contemplating having an abortion - for any reason?
One of my good friends had two abortions when they were not yet legal in Canada. However, she was not too perturbed about them so it was not a matter of commiserating or counseling, but merely discussing
how the law should be changed.
2. ?What is moral - not related to the first question but from an article I saw online?
Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. It also depends on where you live.
3. ?What age were you when you felt the oldest in your entire life - a friend and I were talking about this and our oldest days occurred with a month of each other - fifty plus years ago.
The first time I thought about aging was on my 40th birthday.
4. ?Do you think the death penalty is appropriate for some crimes?
I'm against the death penalty because too many innocent people have been executed.
