Bert, I don't understand flipping the scope horizontal in DEC..(move it in dec around left (right) how much?? What about RA, just leave it verticle (ie, weights straight down) Thanks :) CS Jay

Duplex 6 wire for ST-8 & CG-11 Hand Controller
2
For whatever reason, I don't seem to be able to fabricate a duplex 6 pin box for the hand controller and the ST-8 TIC cable to operate from. I am using a 6 pin RJ25 duplex box and have it wire as the hand controller is wired. The main plug is parallel wired to the second plug. The hand controller works fine while plugged directly into the mount but when the duplex box is connected, no power is seen at the hand controller. Any idea as to where the proper wiring schematic can be found? This is driving me nuts!! Any help is appreciated. Steve

Encoder resolution
9
Hi, Just joined this group and would like to solicit your opinions on encoder resolutions for the GM8. I have picked up a set of used encoders from a GM9 and retrofitted them on to my GM8. The encoders that came with the GM9 are labeled 2160 and will only work with my Losmandy DSC when programed as 4096. Has anyone out there used higher resolution encoders on their GM mount? Is there an advantage? Also I am still struggling with the two star alignment procedure. Does every one have to go through the 90 degree alignment setup before getting accurate DSC read out? Thanks... -Mark Simmons-

Mounting C9.25 using Losmandy plates
7
Has anyone mounted a C9.25 using the Losmandy dovetail? If you put the DC9.25 on the top of the scope you have to flip the scope upside down in order to attach it to the Losmandy dovetail. I'm looking at using tube rings in conjunction with the Losmandy plates to avoid inverting the scope, but I'd like to know what others may have done. Regards, Bob

Where can I get a hand controller cable splitter?
4
I'm considering a autoguider to use with the G11. The hand controller cable uses a 6 conductor cable and I assume that a st4 uses the same. I have found plenty of standard 4 conductor phone cord splitters but the only 6 condictor ones I can find split the 6 into a pair of 4's for dual line phone systems. Who sells the appropriate splitter so a st4 and the hand controller may be connected at the same time? Ideally from a local chain store. Thanks.

GM8
5
I have a GM8 and some questions. 1) I am reading alot about tearing down and relubing the GM11. Is this something I should consider doing to my GM8? If so, what is the best lube to do this with? 2) My mount came without the delron gear covers. Should I invest in them. Will they offer me that much more protection. Thanks. Clear Skies, Brian

M31 after G11 RA mod
5
Hi all, This is my first shot after modifying the RA axis on my G11. The mod appears to have accomplished the objective. The stars are much rounder and better defined than before the mod. (See: http://www.barry.net/Astro/losmandy_g11_ra_pe.html) I pick up a copy of Photoshop the other day and since it was cloudy last night, I finally tried my hand at processing a color image. (I've had a CFW8 attached to my CCD camera for years, but never really used it until just recently.) Have a look: http://www.barry.net/Astro/m31experiment.html It came out reasonably well for a first attempt, but may be a little too 'colorful'. I didn't really play much with the color balance other than setting the ratios during the combine in MaxIm. Most of the Photoshop processing was to bring out local detail by adjusting local histogram specs. I particularly like how the blue/red nebulosity shows up in the dust lanes, but don't know why it is so pronounced here. Most of the M31 images I have seen have little color in the lanes. Neal

G-11 Re-Lube
4
Thanks to all who contributed to advise on relubing the G-11. With Mark's and others advice, I decided to try this myself and did indeed find that all bearings on the RA & DEC were seized. The only problem I had was in the beginning of disassembly. My mount came with the Losmandy encoders installed and you must remove the shaft gear in order to disassemble the shafts. It is easy enough to do as a set screw holds the gear to a flat spot on the shaft. All the other instructions were complete and easy to follow. The only other advise I would add is paying special attention to reassembly of the clutches to make sure they are not to loose or tight. I found that if I tightened the clutches fairly tight before locking down the set screw worked best for me. Any who have not attempted this really should. The difference is tremendous and really should be listed under maintenance in the manuals. I expect to get much better guiding using my ST-8 just due to the lack of friction that relubing cured. Again, thanks for all the advise. Clear Skies, Steve

How much pounds?
3
Hello to all: At this moment I am buying a mount Losmandy G11 to place in this mount one telescope OTA Celestron 11 " with NGFS focuser and a DRO JMI, together with one camara CCD ST-9E and too the possibly place a Flip Mirror Meade 647. The mount comes with 21 pounds of counterweight. My question is: How much pounds I am going to need to support all the previous equipment? Victor Ladino E-mail adair@... Barquisimeto, Venezuela

G-11 Pwr Cable Connector
5
Does anyone know where to get replacement 12V power cable connectors (or complete cigarette lighter ready cables) with the screw down collar? I have discovered that much arcing and sparking is caused by poor mating of the negative contact. Could easily fry a G-11 or CI-700 control board. Losmandy doesn't show the cable as a replacement part and Kendrick's site isn't up. Thanx - Otto

JMI NGC MAX complete install kit for G11
3
I am the new owner of a G11 (in fact, it still hasn't been unboxed having just arrived). I have never even seen a G11, but I got one off astromart for a good price. At any rate somebody else found out that I had just purchased a G11 and recommended me getting the JMI NGC MAX complete install kit for G11. Does anybody have any experience with this? Is it worth getting if I can get a new one at a lower price than is advertised new on the net? Would it be better to get something else? Glenn

DSC coiled cable
This G11 addition looks great and works well. I bought a standard, 12' black good quality coiled phone cable and cut it into three pieces. One about half the length and one about 5" long (coiled size) and put the remainder in the spare parts box. The longer is for the Dec encoder since it moves the most. One end of each fits nicely into a RJ-45 connector side-by-side (8 contacts) and the other ends each go to a RJ-14 connector (6 contacts). You will need to check your current cable to see which one goes to which side of the RJ-45 and the direction of the RJ-14. You will need to straighten out the ends that were in the middle of the coil a bit (bend opposite direction by hand and hold for a while). This solves two problems, first the coiled cables don't get in the way. Second, the shorter cable prevents you from plugging the cables into the wrong encoder (but I sure that never happened to you). If you know anyone who does computer networking that will probably have the crimper and the ends. (or about $35 from Radio Shack for a combo crimper + plastic RJ-XX ends) Good luck. PS: Does anyone know of a source of 6 conductor black COILED cable for making spare motor cables?

Slight wobble between G11 head and tripod pier
2
I seem to have a slight bit of slop between the G11 head and the tripod pier. I'm using the TKS (no-tool tripod knobs) as tight as I can hand crank them. This is only noticable when there is weight on the unit (C11 & counter weights). The shift is about a 1/8" at worst. The knobs seem to shift a little in the enlongated pier slots. A shim between the pier and head would pull the knobs to the top of the slot and stop the slop as would accurately set round holes (Not a slam, just an obervation) Has anyone else noticed this?

Worm drives
2
Hi all, Very interesting postings on this group some of which make interesting reading and have already solved some problems with my G11 mount. Anyway I have recently stripped down and relubed my mount, the only problem I have left is how to set up the worm drives. It seems very awkward to get the pressure just right, it either feels to tight or to slack against the drive wheel on both ra and dec,is there any procedure to get this assembly spot on as it looks like the only adjustment is on the two bolts that hold the bearing blocks in place, any ideas? Regards Bill Snowzell

Qns. about the GM-8
3
Hi folks. I am seriously considering buying the GM-8, and have two questions. 1. It seems it has no slow-motion controls. Do the slewing capabilities effectively act as slow-motion controls? 2. I am planning to build an `observatory'; four walls and a deck, no roof (bless the neighbors, but curse their lights). How will the GM-8's head hold up under weather? At my site it can get into the high nineties in Summer (humid, too), close to zero in Winter. Would one of these `Desert Storm' bags do the trick? Or maybe enclosing the pier and head in a hinged box. Anyhow, I want to leave the thing set up. So I guess this question is a more general one about eq. heads and how they react to the elements. Thanks for any help.

Gemini and older Celestron G11 mounts
2
I have emailed Scott this however since their are a few people familiar with the Gemini Goto retrofit here, I thought I'd ask as well. Are there any incompatibilities with the older G11 mounts label by Celestron? I have a G11 without the second altitude lock bolt. Probably 1994 or there abouts (I bought it used). Thanks Jeff

GM-8 Knob Question
3
When assembling my new GM-8, I wound up with two extra bolts (about 1/4" thread)with "L" shaped little handles on them. Can't figure out where they go unless they were suppose to be used to mount the control panel (threads fit), but the L shaped handles seem sort of peculiar for that purpose. I found two bolts with regular thumbscrews that I used to mount the control panel... just wondering what I missed ??? Thanks, Tony
