Gemini 1 lost
Hi everybody, We have installed one month ago a telescope in an remote observatory, before this we haven?t got any problem with the mount (Losdmandy G11 Gemini-1), but after we installed in the observatory it came the problems. we made the aligment and everthing was going fine, but after a while (8-6 hours) the mount lost the aligment, we change the Gemini, we replace the battery, we made a new realigment, the system works one or two days an again it lost the aligment. Even we try to charge the aligment and the Gemini doesn?t permit. Is like hand control suddendly collapsed!! We have 12v that feed all the mount, camera, rotator….,it works by a relay (Dragonfly), we connected the computer and the power supply by the dragonfly. We are confused with the problem of the Gemini, which could be the problem, it supposed the 12V output is fine. Are we loosing something with the Gemini that whwn we switch off the mount the Gemini loose the aligment??? The mount is "lost", is something rlated with the warm, or cold star. The parameters of aligment are in Gemini, but I think that we made something wrong when we swith off that cause that when we restarted the mount gest "lost" and ask for a realigment. |
Re: Carte du Ciel & GM8+Gemini 2
Hi again Tony
before you reset your limits (your other post), I suggest you get this figured out. I tried CDC and was able to connect but it also appeared it treated my losmandy backwards. I connected via stellarium and sky safari and they were fine, so it seems there's some setting in CDC. I'm not sure why that is, but i would get this straightened out. it may fix your DEC coordinates/setting Limits question Brian |
Re: Safety limits
Hi Tony To change the safety limits for your setup, you want to be at the scope. you slew?your telescope to one side of the pier with your camera pointing towards the earth, and get it to within 1-2" (25-50mm) of the tripod/pier and then choose Menu->Mount->Limits->Set Limit Here slew to opposite side of pier, same position as your camera and repeat. The Gemini will know which side of the pier you're on and applies the limit accordingly hth Brian On Fri, Oct 2, 2020 at 5:41 PM Tony Gabriele via <tgabriele73=[email protected]> wrote: I need to change my safety limits as the telescope does not slew to a given point in Carte du Ciel given the "Invalid DEC coordinate" error which I understand is a gemini ascot error message. I will want some accessories such as the RA Ext Kit and GPS.? If one placed an order today, approx how long for shipment? it's in stock, but we are still backlogged on getting orders out. if you order direct from losmandy i'm guessing it will be at least weeks. You can drop a line to tanya at losmandy dot com and ask her. she has the latest info on lead times?
sure! ask away ;)? Brian? Brian Valente portfolio |
Re: GM8 lubrication
Moly greases are great in their place -- very high load bearings and sliding contacts.? But neither the GM-8 or 11 have any surfaces that are that heavily loaded.? In addition, the matrix that Moly greases use is not that different that lithium greases tends and tends to dry out leaving a rather cake-like residue. Go with a synthetic grease designed for wide ranging temperatures.? Super Lube is fine (although I think the addition of the Teflon particles is overblown/overrated) as are several other synthetic greases. Jim |
Pre purchase questions GM811G
Hi all,
New member here.? I have settled on the GM811G with HD tripod and have a few questions.? In no particular order, they are: 1. I plan to autoguide with my ASI120mm camera to the mount's ST4 port via laptop or the the ASIAIR Pro, but am not familiar with the TTL connection.? What is the difference between ST4 and TTL and is there an adapter needed here? 2. Can my Polemaster function with the mount (assuming there is an adapter)? 3. Are any components sourced from China? 4. Will the HD mount will ride on my Scope Buggy without modification?? I did not note any dimensional information on the website. 5. The Losmandy website indicates that this mount is in stock.? I will want some accessories such as the RA Ext Kit and GPS.? If one placed an order today, approx how long for shipment? I am sure there will be more.? Your indulgence is appreciated. |
Safety limits
Tony Gabriele
I need to change my safety limits as the telescope does not slew to a given point in Carte du Ciel given the "Invalid DEC coordinate" error which I understand is a gemini ascot error message. There is a Losmandy video on how to change the values but its not clear what I would change them to.

True. They're expensive but you get sun reflective coatings outside and dew suppression rubberized coatings on the inside. Plastic inside alone would provide nucleation sites for dew.? Chuck -----Original Message-----

Telegizmo is niche and overpriced BBQ covers IMHO. These days every accessory that has the word "astro" or "telescope" has an insane mark up. Another tip if you're looking for cylindrical bags to carry your tubes look no further than drum sets bags. They're good quality, heavy duty and great padded carry bags.

I am using Superlube in my GM-8, works great. But I also have a can of industrial moly grease that I used to use on the brakes in a high performance sports sedan many years ago. It seems to plate itself on any metal surface -- was curious if this might be usable as well?I use the MP50 on the spur gear. I find it keeps the worm wet and has a nice consistency. But nowhere else. |

Re: Cover for G11 with 9.25 SCT and guide scope
Bought a large reflective tarp (silver one side, blue the other), folded it in half with the silver side out and asked wifey to sew up the ends making a sufficiently large and inexpensive cover. Use it inside my ROR observatory for the telescope and GM811G mount. Jamey On Fri, Oct 2, 2020, 1:06 PM Brian Valente <bvalente@...> wrote:

Re: Cover for G11 with 9.25 SCT and guide scope
+1 for telegizmos covers I leave my scopes out 24/7 365, including rain and lately temperatures up to 118F (you read that right) and my scopes and equipment have weathered it just fine (pun intended haha) I also added a bit of radiant heat shield to the top to avoid the sun beating on it too much Brian On Fri, Oct 2, 2020 at 10:51 AM ruasonid via <ruasonid=[email protected]> wrote: I'm trying to find a suitable cover that will work for the above setup, which measures roughly 40" wide and 46" tall (to upper tripod clamps) for visual and possibly 48" wide for the imaging train when I setup later (though that is more likely when I have an ROR). Ideally, I'm looking for something discreet, e.g. green in colour (which I know is not ideal) but that's not a showstopper. I was recommended the Telegizmos cover for 12-14" EQ/GEM mounted SCTs. That sounds like it might be too bog (and I don't want loose covers flapping about). Until I get a ROR built I envisage leaving the setup out for a couple of weeks at a time if not more (depending on weather). Once I have the ROR the cover would be used for camps, dark site visits, etc. Suggestions welcome. --

Re: PHD2/G11T connection problems
Nice work Jeff As I recall, you did a major upgrade into some really long focal lengths, so getting even this far is a pretty big step forward Brian On Fri, Oct 2, 2020 at 10:38 AM jeff marston <jeffmarston@...> wrote:

After some feedback from Brian, I rounded up the proper cables for PHD2 and plugged them into the correct ports. I also readjusted the worm gear compression on the RA unit. Last night was the first chance I have had to?give
autoguiding a good shot. and it worked. The guiding graph was a bit rough at first, but it smoothed out quickly. I was able to take some decent short exposure shots?of
M13. The stars were round and there was no drift from frame to frame. I would call that a success!?
As I am getting more familiar with my new mount, I am starting to really like how well it is working. I was using my C8 with a .7 focal
reducer last night. Decent guiding with a 1400mm focal length is not a small thing. I have aspirations of using my C11 for imaging, also, but I am quite happy that the smaller scope worked so well for now.?

I am trying to get PHD2 working and then do some autoguiding. I have been able to do autoguiding, using PHD2, with my CGX-L mount, but haven't tried it with my Losmandy mount, yet.

[Edited Message Follows] What are you trying to accomplish?? Get PHD2 auto-guiding working -or- control the mount -or- start up the mount? |
Carte du Ciel & GM8+Gemini 2
Tony Gabriele
I want to use Carte du Ciel to control my Gemini. I first do a Gemini startup and confirm all coordinates using the GPS satellite attachment. So times & coordinates are correct pointing to Polaris. I set it as my home position with the Gemini and then connect the Carte du Ciel.?
Unfortunately when I ask the scope to slew it goes in the opposite direction.? Any ideas how to correct? |
