New HGM Titan

David Gimenez

Hello group

Yesterday arrived my new HGM Titan...incredible mount, but I have two doubts and I wonder if anyone on the list could help me:
-How can I tight the elevation axis? Is there any tool to do that?
-I cannot adjust the elevation more than 43?, is there any special procedure to adjust it from 43? to 70? (ie: inverting the position of the tangent arm screw)?
Thank you in advance

Re: G11 Power Supply Requirements

Rob Watson

If you a have an unregulated supply and a less than superb meter then
the high voltage is probably normal. Under loaded conditions the voltage
probably drops a bit closer to 12VDC as the meter simply does not load
the supply. The power supply will work fine for you.

I use a 12VDC 1 amp regulated supply that measures 14VDC but under load(
drawing 500mA ) the voltage is 12.3VDC.

shanelapierre@... wrote:

The documentation states that the G11 requires 12vdc @ 500ma. I
noticed a few posts on this group of people with 3amp supplies
(120VAC to 12VDC @ 3amp), and I'm curious if you've found this as a
requirement for guiding or because you're powering other gear. I was
planning on trying a wall transformer that states output of 12VDC @
800ma. I just wanted to check the polarity to make sure it matched
the G11 input, and it turned out the transformer outputs 17VDC.
Anybody have an opinion on using this source to power my G11 at home
so I don't have to constantly use the battery? Do you have another
recommendation?

Thanks,
Shane LaPierre

Welcome

Hi everyone.

I'd been looking for a good quality GEM to start doing some serious
observing and imaging and after a lot of questioning I decided to get
a G-11. For the price, I found it to have an excellent spec and the
engineering is just a work of art. With the new GoTo available soon,
these mounts are going to be even better.

So let's use this discussion group well and get the best of what
Scott's mounts have to offer.

Clear skies and good tracking,
Ian.

Hello

Steve Nightingale

Hi everyone,

I obtained a G11 this spring and I've been posting my experiences on
telescopes and sct egroups. I've started making some modifications
with some success. I'll sit down later today and summarize my
experiences on a more lengthy post.

In the meantime, has anyone tried running in the RA gear with an
abrasive? Instructions supplied with my old 11" Mathis gear
recommended doing so, then cleaning and regreasing the gear.

Talk to you later,

Steve

Hello

Donald J. D'Egidio

I have owned a CG11 for 5 years and it has served me well. I have recently disassembled and relubed
the mount with Radio Shack Lube Gel lubricant. So far so good. I am in the process of computerizing
the mount with Mel Bartel's system. Check here for his website giving lots of information.

Will get back to the group when it's up and running.

Hello Losmandy Users

Hello everyone!

I have a GM-8 and posted a philosophical review of it on
www.cloudynights.com. I use it extensively with a 6" Mak/Cassigrain
and 5" Mak/Newtonian.

I really want to lubricate the mount to be smoother. A friend of
mine has a G11 which is smooth as silk - he relubricated his mount
and it does not have any sticking points - even if his clutches are
fairly snug. I would like to have the same smoothness (my mount
tends to stick).

Milton,

The best thing you can do to make your G11 move more smoothly is to
replace the nylon thrust washers with teflon, or, as in my case, put
thin sheet teflon on either side of the nylon disk. Don't lubricate
it, you'll see tremendous improvement!

Hi Steve,
Its called lapping and there are different lapping compounds
for different metals. I have not tried it on mine yet but I`m sure it would
make an improvement in PE. I`m not sure what grit to use with aluminum and
stainless.

Improving the G-11

I picked up a used G-11 mount fairly recently and while I am generally happy with it, I would like a slightly smoother operation.? I am not, however, in any way mechanical and cringe at the idea of disassembling this magnificent piece of machinery.? Are there techniques for improving the movement of this mount without serious disassembly?? Any websites explaining these techniques?

Hi everyone.

I have both a GM8 and a G11. Great mounts at a price point no one is at
right now. I have not done the relube on either but will. Both have the
exact same problem however. The power jack is loose on the electronics. So I
wind up using tape to keep some tension on the power plug. Otherwise it'll
lose power intermittently. You can just wiggle it and it'll go on and off.
Funny that both mounts seem to have the same problem. Anyone solve it short
of sending the whole thing back to Hollywood? Not that it's a big deal, I
live in Orange County, one county south of L.A. However I bought both mounts
second hand and they are long since out of warranty. I'd hate to think the
whole board had to be replaced! <g>

Clear skies,
Jeff

I have the same problem with the drive corrector on my GM8. I've
tried to find exact fit plugs, but haven't been successful. That
said, the power out jack fits the plug much better, seems to be wired
in parallel to the in jack and works fine.

The grease inside is probablylike glue. E-Mail me for better details/tipsMark

Disassembly of G-11

I'll try to describe the G-11 disassembly for re-lubing:
First, set the mount up in a well lit area.
Then , proceed to take the Dec. Axis apart by unscrewing the Dec. Clutch
Knob, and make sure that you remove the complete bearing/shim-pack all
together to keep the shim-pack in its proper order.
Set both the Clutch knob, and the shim-pack aside on a table where it
WON"T get bumped, and spill over.
Now, take the Dec. Shaft out of it's housing by grabbing the
Saddle-Plate, and pulling it directly straight out.
Set this aside on a table.
Next, proceed to the RA Axis
It is the EXACT same procedure as the Dec. Axis. (By removing the RA
Clutch Knob, and Bearing Pack)
Keep these in order also.
The slide the RA Shaft out of its housing the same way, by grabbing the
Dec Housing, and sliding it directly out.
Clean Both RA, and Dec shafts with either Turpentine/Naptha/Gasoline.
Then use the same solvent to clean the Roller Needle Bearing packs
inside each housing with clean towels. (There are 2 per housing)
You will most likely notice that these bearings were seized.
Repeat this cleaning process, until these bearings are as clean as you
can get them.
There are many high grade greases available, and pretty much, all will
work satisfactory.
Synthetic greases, and those with Lithium/Teflon/Moly will naturally
work better.
Also put a fine coat of lube on both the RA, and Dec shafts where the
needle bearings make contact on them. (You will most likely see where
the bearings have been wearing/polishing the shafts.
Reassemble in the reverse order.
You may wish to clean, and lube the bearing packs/shims also before
putting them back, but be sure not to lose the orientation.
Repeat this process every 7-10 months Mark

Disassembly of G-11

I Would also like to add that when re-installing both the RA Shaft, and
the Dec Shaft into thier respective housings to carefully, and slowly
slide these back in, maintaining proper alignment, as not to bang the
Rollers Bearings in each of the Housings.
The difference you will see, and feel in your mount will be
unbelieveable.
The G-11, (And the GM-8) are very easy to relube,
The HGM-200 takes a bit more work, but it is not much harder than the 2
previously mentioned. (Saddle Plate must be removed..4-Bolts, and then
a Large Snap ring has to be removed to access the Dec Bearings) Mark

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the advice. Mathis supplied a fine yellow lapping powder,
but I won't attempt it as you seem confident it would serve no
purpose.

I'm assuming you are Scott Losmandy! If so, how about changing the
nylon thrust bearings to teflon? ;>) OTOH, is there a problem with
this mod?

Thanks,

Steve

G11 stiction fix

Bill Faatz

Howdy

I just joined this group. I have a G11 mount. One of the annoyances I
initially had was stiction, especially in the dec axis, when the
mount
was moved manually to use the analog setting circles or sweeping the
field without using the axis motion paddle. The dec axis is
especially
prone to this stiction because the weight of the saddle and load is
supported by the nylon washer in the clutch assmbly rather then the
roller bearings as is the case on the RA axis. It gets noticeably
worse as the temperature drops.
THE SOLUTION:
I replaced both axis nylon washers with teflon washers fabbed out of
0.030in sheet. This has completely solved the stiction problem and
made the motions buttery smooth.

Also I found the green grease used to lube bicycle bearings to work
well for lubing the rollar bearings. A little goes a long way.

Re-grease advice?

Dave O'Toole

Hi Guys:

Great to hear there's a Losmandy list, thanks for starting it up!

Anyhow, I am about to embark on my first G-11 teardown and re-grease
procedure. Do any of you veterans have advice or some good links for
research before I start my adventure?

Thanks,

Re: G-11 Stiction Fix

Hi Bill, I have heard of one other person having this problem also, and
they used a lube and had gotten good results, But I like your idea
better.
The "Stickyness" is really not great, but you seem to notice it more
when using high magnification.
Good Tip! Mark
