Re: G11 with digital drive issue - no slewing
HI Andy that's a bummer.? If you just bought it used, the first thing I'd do is ask the original owner.? Maybe they did something or know something about the mount. It's always my first stop if i have problems with used gear On Sat, Oct 24, 2020 at 11:12 AM mbaman91 via <mbaman91=[email protected]> wrote: Hi, --

I'll get one simple thing out of the way first - with a digital drive the fastest "slew" is 16x or ~4 degrees per minute, which is still really slow if you are using the word "slew". It's a guiding speed, not a slewing-to-a-new-position speed.?
Are you sure that the worm is not engaging the gear, ie if you move the scope manually in RA or DEC can you see the main gear turning ? Normally the clutches would slip but the main gear would stay fixed.

G11 with digital drive issue - no slewing
Hi,
I recently purchased a well taken care of used G-11 mount with HD tripod. I attached the mount to the tripod, attached my modest scope, balanced the mount, powered up the system. The mount will not slew in any direction. I have tightened the clutches, loosened the clutches, checked the power supply output, tried all different speeds, etc. When I take removed the worm screw covers, it appears that either worm is not engaging the RA or DEC gear. The stepper motors are working and turning the worm, but obviously if worm not engaging the gears, nothing going on. Any suggestions? Thank you! -- Andy Lawrence G-11 mount |

Re: RAEXK or RAEXT? What's the difference?
Hi Bryn Sorry there is not an RA Extension for the G8. If you upgrade your RA to the GM811, that option becomes available the G8 is already so small and lightweight On Sat, Oct 24, 2020 at 4:18 AM Bryn Evans via <brynevans2000=[email protected]> wrote: Is there an equivalent of the RAEXK for the original GM8 without the tucked in motors? --

As I read it... The "K" version adds a spacer under the clamp (Saddle Plate). 0.6"
Gives a little lift there for the Non-Tucked motor versions. (older versions) I didn't need that with my GM811G, so I simply ordered the RAEXT for my later version mount. I am so glad I ordered this option for my 811. I gave me a quick and highly accurate way to further separate my for moving. Having the RAEXT allows me to have the Dec axis as one piece, and my weight always stays in balance because it never has to be removed. Scott really thinks these modifications through and takes care of his past customers, as well as his newer customers. It really gives credence to, "Because it's the last mount you will ever need." I know of no other mount that offers the customer the great options that a Losmandy mount offers. Its been perfect for me. -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |
Re: Polar Axis
You can polar align accurately with just the main scope, a DSLR and a piece of clear tape with a pinhole, no computer needed.? Assume that the RA axis is roughly aligned with the NCP and that the scope is approximately aligned with the RA axis.?
Take a 30 sec exposure at 6400 ISO rotating around RA only.? Put the piece of tape on the DSLR's LCD screen such that the pinhole is at the center of rotation.? Then, move the NCP on to the pinhole using the Alt/Az controls by taking quick 2-3 second shots.? There is a 5-star asterism close to the NCP that you can easily see on the LCD (I could point it out but you can also look it up in Stellarium).? It will be as accurate as Sharpcap. The hardest part is actually in stated assumptions - configure the scope roughly such that an RA rotation has the NCP sufficiently inside the LCD to work with.? A 2 degree FOV would be good.? What I do first is to try this visually - turn DEC such that a rotation around RA shows the stars going around in circles, roughly.? That means that the OTA and RA axis are aligned.? Then, turn Az such that Polaris (or NCP ideally) is in the FOV.? Then you should be close enough to start. |
Re: Polar Axis
I actually have Sharpcap Pro and in between clouds this week I have completed a rough polar alignment using the drift method.? Not perfect yet but hoping to finalize it this weekend, based on any clear skies.? I will then attempt to use the polar align feature in Sharpcap Pro to verify my polar alignment and fine tune any discrepancies.

Re: RAEXK or RAEXT? What's the difference?
Hi Mike when you order from that page you will receive the correct RA Extension kit. For a new G11 mount you'll need the RAEXT The two kits are identical, except the "K" version has an extra spacer in there. in the worst case if you received the RAEXK, you would just get an extra part Brian On Thu, Oct 22, 2020 at 3:39 PM Stosh <mike@...> wrote:

RAEXK or RAEXT? What's the difference?
Hi all,With all the backlogs, I'm trying to ensure I don't order the wrong part and then have to go through an additional backlog to order the right part.? ?I'm not 100% sure what the difference is between the two RA upgrades.I've ordered a G11G, and when you use the Losmandy configurable mount page to purchase, if you add an RA kit, it appends the order to "G11G-BRAEXK". |
Re: Parking and Flipping and Piers
Sonny Edmonds
Hi Rick,
I tried APT, but I had troubles running it, so I eventually drifted away. Even NINA has been a hard sell to me. I need bone simple. And Meridian Flips were always a PITA. However, I did execute a good one the other night using the Gemini Telescope controller. ?> Find Telescope / Mount drivers in the orange left menu.... Scroll down to??Gemini Telescope .NET (1.0.75, April 2020)? That gives you a virtual control pad for your computer screen. Under the Func button, you can select "sync at currant coordinates", then "Perform Meridian Flip". And the mount will do a meridian flip and come back to your object you were working with. Incidentally, that hand controller on your computer screen is handy as a pocket on a shirt. I check the "Keep this window on top" box (under func) and set the controller off to my lower right for any adjusting or centering I want to do. But the Gemini Telescope controller handles my parking. I just open the Park button, and get a menu of options. Since I'm simple, I just choose Park at Start Up Position (Which to me is CWD, aimed at the North Celestial Pole. After my Polar Alignment. After closing Sharpcap, I turn on my Gemini and it remembers that as it's starting position. Then run my Model.) There are a lot of Parking options with our Losmandy Mounts. It doesn't have to be CWD. You could park it on the side, horizontal, for say a roll-off-roof (ROR) observatory building, or a position for easiest telescope removal. I just use CWD because I'm dismantling my "chunks" after every night. And I just use the hand controller, or the virtual hand controller. Incidentally, I often come inside and run my mount from my mancave with Tight VNC (??). And when I'm ready to quit, I tell the mount to park, and everything is ready for me to play mule packing it in. Probably not the auto sequence you want, but it works for me and my hands-on ways. Incidentally, The 12" extension is for a portable pier configuration. The RAEXT is the rascal that allows imaging through a meridian. Currently I have no desirable objects in my Southern skies for the "No Meridian Flip" long imaging. But in June I did. I picked up in the S/E and imaged it until a near crash with the EX12 column. Right through the Southern Meridian, no flip. 13,000 seconds total. I had no idea how long I could go. I just targeted the object, centered it, set PHD2 on the area, and watched the show. As the telescope approached the Limit, I'd reset the limit further and further, 3 times. To give the mount as much room as I could for the longest possible session. It was all an experiment to me. Trying out the No Meridian Flip afforded by the RAEXT. Another time, I got onto a different object, , towards my North for another long go. That time I got 18,000 seconds (5 hours) non-stop. I'm enjoying these long run imaging sessions. It's as close as I've gotten to a "Set-it and Forget-it" image. But my goal is to gather very weak details of the object. Now, where I'm falling flat on my face is my very limited post-processing abilities. If you click on the links above my friends at UHH help me a lot by working with the data. Albireo brought out a huge amount of detail, as did my other buddy Europa. But I'm bumbling along. I have a lot of fun anyway. I have discovered something of a glitch in my Northward imaging. PHD2 hits a block along the way. I think it may have to do with the overhead wires, but haven't nailed it down just yet. Last night I had a good run started on The Embryo Nebula, but got clouded out with misting fog. Just loverly! Closed shop at 11 PM (23:00 Hrs). Now we have a bunch of damp and rain possible for the next several days. Time to play indoors, Check for dust mites, Do some Fall cleaning. ;^) -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |

About the license, personally I'm just in it for the hobby, and I'll freely share, but I'm sure that there are others that want to retain their rights to the photo.? Re: Parking and Flipping and Piers
I¡¯ve tested the parking several times. I know if I don¡¯t have the CWD set up in the Gemini then APT commands a straight park command the scope parks right then and there.? funny thing is Gemini correctly knows where CWD is. After it does this 90 degree off thing, I can command a manual park at CWD and it goes to the correct location.?

Re: Polar Axis
Sonny Edmonds
I bought a Polar Scope for my old mount, but wasn't impressed with it.
Since my whole reason for looking up was to do AP, I use my Laser Pointer, Guide Scope, and Main Telescope to do the looking for me. At Brian's recommendation, I use to do my polar alignment. I'm still perfecting it's use with my Atik Infiniky camera, but almost have it working fabulously. I'm doing 2 second exposures, and 20-30 gain settings. I'm sure a better camera would behave better. But jacking up the gain has sped things up for me. I'm not apt to ever buy another Polar Scope. But I'm 70, so I'm not apt to do a lot of things anymore. ;^) LOL! -- SonnyE (I suggest viewed in full screen) |
