Cable Tie Down on RA, Advice please.

In an effort to reduce cable drag while imaging on my Titan, I downloaded the cable tie down file,?TieDwnPdPltfrmskpV3.stl, from Titan group site and printed it on a 3D printer.? I made both a PLA and ABS version.? I intend to attach it to the RA cover using 3M VHB tape.?

I also posted on the Titan group.

Advice please? Thanks,

Michael

Re: Fitting McLennan gearboxes

Folks

Losmandy mounts have been around for decades

in the earlier days people treated the mount as a DIY thing, and customizations were not uncommon

The Mclennan gearboxes were one of those things that people liked to swap out.

Today losmandy mounts are much improved and more refined, and many (i'd say most if not all) the customizations are no longer desired. It's much more of a set-it-up-and-image mount. Scott continues to fine tune and improve the mounts. FYI he also personally tunes each mount that goes out.?

I'm a firm believer that the results speak for themselves, so if people get great results with [fill in the blank] then great. that's really what it's about.?

For anyone looking at the mclennan gearboxes, just a word of caution, it's not all candy and unicorns.

We see a lot of people quietly moving back to the original gearboxes, you don't see that much here. You are also customizing the mount which means the support you are relying on comes from peers who have done this before: it's a custom mount.?

Re: New Tutorial video - wavy washer upgrade

Hi John

that's a good question. We don't specify it by sharp vs unsharp side. The notion is pretty straightforward: you want the flattest side facing the worm gear. This is so it stays seated and if you really loosen your RA it doesn't pop out accidentally (even if it does, you can always put it back in, but hopefully with the correct side down).

if you aren't sure you can always just place it on a surface and do that test, and whichever side is flat (or flatter) is the side facing the worm gear.

Re: G11T questions

Other than the tripod extender any other accessories? I assume another counterweight (maybe 2x11#).?

Is there an option to purchase without tripod? I have a Avalon T130 but would need adapter

Re: New Tutorial video - wavy washer upgrade

Brian,

While not specifically stated in the video, I assume the washer sharp edge side goes down to the lower disc, and the smooth side goes up to the nylon disc. After being compressed inside the mount for a year or two, perhaps the jumpy side won't be as obvious. Some smaller size wavy washers I used in the past lose their spring tension and go flat over time. Hope you can clarify this point. The sharp side would probably dig into the nylon more easily, as has been mentioned in this forum in weeks past.

Many thanks,

John

Re: New Tutorial video - wavy washer upgrade

Hi Brian,

Thank you for a very informative video.? After watching this video, I dismantled my G-11 in order to check the wavy washer direction.? Actually, the washer was installed around one year ago, after I talked with HGM about the sticky RA.
I found the direction was wrong.? I reseated it correctly as instructed in your video.

Brendan,

Not sure about the GoTo motors but the stepper motors I used to have on my mount were SAIA (from memory) and I think they were Swiss made.

I had no problem with them and I only sold them because I needed GoTo.

Arun,
I meant to say, best to take it apart and look to see if you don't already have the spring washer in yours.
From what Brian explained to me, our GM811G heads are a kind of high-bred. G11 - RA, with a GM-8 - Dec.
So since our GM811G's are probably (But I don't know) the latest of the greatest, maybe the "wavey washer" Spring Washer is already in it.

I could easily dismantle mine to look for you. But I'd prefer not to if I can talk you into dismantling yours instead. ;^) LOL!

It would be nice if you were counted in that group. But now, humm, not so sure.
You have a tendency to freak out and fly off the handle.

Enjoy your mount. I enjoy mine just the way it is. All American, and no Metric, or Wentworth in it anywhere.

And if I meant to offend you, Oh, believe me, I could rip you a new one.
I simply disagreed with your linked article.

David,

It is the way you linked it that led me to believe it was your site, assumptions are always dangerous :), however, I also took it that you were endorsing the site, another assumption perhaps but then what is says follows.

I can see that if you use PEC it would have an advantage but I have never done that.

Thanks for the clarification.
