Re: Is a Losmandy right for me?

Welcome to the groupe Ken, I am new to this fine groupe my self. The specs say yes for the G811. I went with A G11 just for a hedge 10 Lbs. is 10 Lbs. And does not cost that much more. When you start adding stuff on the 11inch SCT the weight will add up guick. My G11 tracks fine with a Celestron 8 Edge HD? and adding? a 2 inch Diagonal, filter wheel, I like my TV 31mm Type 5 my weight is right at 30 Lbs The G11 does not.know it is their. The G811 with the Light weight tripod will be easier to transport. Either way you go you will be happy.

Hi all,
I'm seriously considering a GM811 for astrophotography. I've been imaging for several years with a LX200GPS 8", QSI683 with filter wheel and Off Axis Guide camera. What I would _like_ to do (I think), is dismount the Meade and transfer the imaging set up to the 811 (for ease of set up - no permanent observatory). I'll also, probably, get a small refractor for wide field. So, will the 811 handle the 8", or possible an 11" Celestron with good tracking/guiding, or is that too ambitious? How long of an exposure could I expect without problems? I appreciate all answers.
Thanks.
Ken, Newbie to group and using a GEM :)

Frank,

There are only a couple ways to break a ballhead wrench. Shopping at the local Tool Barn, Harbor Freight or whatever they call the place with tools sold by the ton is the primary problem.?Quit buying cheap ballhead wrenches. There is no way you can break off the head of a quality ballhead. Only the junk from who knows where can do that or using a ballhead wrench to break a fastener loose that is over torqued.?

Which brings me to another topic, use a torque wrench (and keep them calibrated) on anything that sees a load and if it is an exposed fastener use a tiny thread covering Dan of quality anti-seize/corrosion paste. Doing otherwise invites problems like you describe.?

It’ll work a heck of a lot better than the LX200 mount, that’s for sure.. I am not sure if that model is the one you want for an 11” SCT.. Others can comment on that..

?

I am completely new to guided imaging, but my first try with my G11 yielded perfectly round stars in 5 minutes subs.. That’s pretty good I think when you consider I have (currently) a lot of declination backlash.. I didn’t try longer than that, as I was happy to be past 60 seconds and my ASI178 is very sensitive.. Haven’t tried but I don’t think I would have any trouble going to 30 minutes.. or more.. I would never consider that with an LX200..

?

I went from a 12” LX200 Classic, to a perfect 5” refractor on a G11.. The hardest part has been Expectations.. Expecting the G11 to do things the way the LX200 did them.. Once I forgot everything I knew, it has worked perfectly..

Re: Counterweights

are you saying someone is already doing this? 10% margin is not a realistic margin for a company to build this kind of thing
That's my point, even if you buy rounds by the freight car you can't make money in steel weights. Steel costs twice as much as iron by the ton. Using modern foundry processes fairly smooth iron castings can be made.

Sonny, thank you. Those Bondhus, wrenches are in the mail right now I ordered a set it T handles ball head? a set of T Handel? hex heads and a 13 piece set of double ball head L type wrenches last night. A little overboard but not expensive, so what the heck. And made here in the U.S.A.

I'm another strong believer in Bondhus T Handles. They are a Tradesman Standard.
I also have Standard and Metric Craftsman T Handle allen wrenches, non-ball head.

It should be noted that Bondhus Ball Heads land slightly below the surface of the hex socket. So they are less likely to mar the bolt they are used in.
You can also get them in a standard L type with the ball configuration on the long shank if you prefer. (Might fit your survival tool kit better)

All Bondhus? products are guaranteed for life. If you are not happy with a Bondhus? tool - for any reason - simply return it. A replacement will be shipped right out at no cost - no hassles, no questions asked!?Not all warranties are created equal, and the tool industry is no exception. Reading the fine print often makes telling statements about the manufacturer’s confidence in their own product.?

“We, at Bondhus, believe in the quality of our tools and the warranty they carry is your proof.”

You can also use old weights from the gym or new weights from the sports store of choice, and have the center machined out to fit the correct shaft size, and sandwich the weight between the other Losmandy weights. Paint it as you desire for beautification.

?A used mach one is more like $5K
A mach 2 by default with renishaw absolute encoders, wow only $8K or $9K
Theres got to be a reason why all my friends, on line pals and internet acquaintances get APOD’s all the time with mostly AP mounts and OTA’s. Losmandy gear has been good to me but Ive reached a point of long term frustration with the chief glitches of gemini 2 and the lack of an official f/t software team. When my pal Tom Hilton died it kind of turned a page for me and opened up new directions and I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford a move.?

Re: Counterweights

Well Chip, maybe not of Celestron origin at all.? My weight has flat smooth surfaces, sharp clean edges, and when suspended and struck the sound produced is?more of a “ring” of great clarity,?high pitch and ~ 2 second delay..

Re: Counterweights

Frank,?

Those are 100% cast counterweights. This is a common misconception, virtually every Chinese made counterweight is made the same way and they are finished the same way. They are vintage Celestron CG11 parts, look at any vintage Celestron catalog with close images of CG11 mounts.?

I never use ball head unless absolutely necessary to reach awkward angled spots. The ball-head can snap off, then you have fun trying to extract the tool steel hardened tip.
A set comes in handy, I prefer to also have a few individual T-handle hex wrenches for my most commonly used sizes and a long handled hex wrench for Alt Lock and pivot.? A folding set is also handy when traveling, you do not loose just one wrench.? As far as sizes, I will check my notes and update this post later.

I do need at least one ball head for the screws that conect the motors to the gearbox, I understand what you are saying.?
