Encoder resolution

Mark Simmons

Hi,

Just joined this group and would like to solicit your opinions on
encoder resolutions for the GM8. I have picked up a set of used
encoders from a GM9 and retrofitted them on to my GM8. The encoders that
came with the GM9 are labeled 2160 and will only work with my Losmandy
DSC when programed as 4096. Has anyone out there used higher resolution
encoders on their GM mount? Is there an advantage?

Also I am still struggling with the two star alignment procedure. Does
every one have to go through the 90 degree alignment setup before
getting accurate DSC read out?

Thanks...

Hello Robert,

I don't understand the problem. I'm planning to purchase a G9.25 OTA to
use it with my G11, will I have problems to install the tube on the
mount?

At this time I have the original Losmandy plate for the Meade 10", is it
possible to adapt it to the G9.25 optical tube? What is the exact
distance between the front cell's screw holes and the back cell's ones?

Thank you for the help :-)

Robert,

My feeling is your 9.25 should mount fine. If you were told you would
have to mount you 9.25 upside down, I am betting you can go the other
route like I did. I can carry my OTA around by the dovetail, solid with
no problems.

The mounting bolts will be at the extreme ends of the mounting slots on
the dovetail and will just fit the mounting holes. You may not be able
to use all four bolts, but like I said, mine is a solid mating of the
OTA and dovetail.

Take care,

If you don't find one, would you be interested in splitting a pair?
I just replaced the connector on my RA drive after my G11's maiden

Try Wil Milan at

He spends time mostly on the APML and Takahashi lists so he may not have
seen your post. I don't have a C9.25, but he does and he uses the G-11, so
he must have worked out a good way to handle it.
Hope this helps...

Has anyone mounted a C9.25 using the Losmandy dovetail? If you put
the DC9.25 on the top of the scope you have to flip the scope upside
down in order to attach it to the Losmandy dovetail.

I'm looking at using tube rings in conjunction with the Losmandy
plates to avoid inverting the scope, but I'd like to know what
others may have done.

Bob

Gregory,

Thanks for the info. I wonder if the hole pattern is the same
on the C9.25? The C9.25 also weighs a bit more than the C8 OTA
(about 22 pounds I think), but hopefully not enough to make a
difference. I think I'll try your suggestion because this would
be much less expensive than using the tube rings.

BTW, I'm having a hard time finding the DC9.25 plate. Neither
Pocono West or Anacortes have them in stock right now and I was told
that Scott is away until the 15th so I suppose that means I'll
have to wait to get them.

I discovered otherwise. I used the standard dovetail for the G-11
and
was able to mount the OTA rightside up. It takes a little finesse,
but
it worked with no problems.

The plate is bolted using the opposite sides of the elongated holes
provided on the plates (thanks to Scott for that forsight) four
corners.
The elongation of the mounting holes is what helps, the bolts just
fit.

You can not use all four holes, but everything remains orthagonal,
tight
and trouble free. After continued set ups and tear downs and a road
trip
to Arizona's night skies, a mountain top star party, I have yet
needed
to adjust the dovetail mount on my OTA. It works.

Re: Where can I get a hand controller cable splitter?

Greg Crawford

Yes, it does depend on what "local" means on the Internet.

Dick Smith Elctronics sells them.

I'm considering a autoguider to use with the G11. The hand
controller cable uses a 6 conductor cable and I assume that a st4
uses the same. I have found plenty of standard 4 conductor phone
cord splitters but the only 6 condictor ones I can find split the 6
into a pair of 4's for dual line phone systems.

Who sells the appropriate splitter so a st4 and the hand controller
may be connected at the same time? Ideally from a local chain
store. Thanks.

"Ace Hardware" stores carry a 6 conductor splitter (part # 3108396) in
the telephone accessory section.

I hope this helps.

I guess that all depends on what is "local" to you. Here in California,
Fry's Electronics carry the 6-conductor duplex connectors. I tried Radio
Shack but they didn't seem to have them.

Here's one company that sells them for a pittance:

I read somewhere that they're called "RJ14" as opposed to the
four-conductor RJ11. Don't know if that's accurate.

Brian,

I got a tube of Lube Gel from Radio Shack for $3 or $4. A 3 oz tube
should
last quite a long time. It claims Superior adhesion:stays where you
put it,
Non-toxic and Non corrosive, won't wash off, didperse, break down or
turn
rancid, does not attract dust or other contaminants, Impervious to
salt and
fresh water and a temperature range of -45 to +450 F. works
extremely well
from what I have seen so far and am looking forward to using the
mount the
first clear night I don't have to work the next day. Hope this

Thanks to all who contributed to advise on relubing the G-11.
With
Mark's and others advice, I decided to try this myself and did
indeed
find that all bearings on the RA & DEC were seized. The only
problem I
had was in the beginning of disassembly. My mount came with the
Losmandy
encoders installed and you must remove the shaft gear in order
to
disassemble the shafts. It is easy enough to do as a set screw
holds the
gear to a flat spot on the shaft. All the other instructions
were
complete and easy to follow. The only other advise I would add
is
paying
special attention to reassembly of the clutches to make sure
they
are
not to loose or tight. I found that if I tightened the clutches
fairly
tight before locking down the set screw worked best for me.

Any who have not attempted this really should. The difference is
tremendous and really should be listed under maintenance in the
manuals.
I expect to get much better guiding using my ST-8 just due to
the
lack
of friction that relubing cured.

Again, thanks for all the advise.

Clear Skies,

Steve
Steve,

What did you use to lube the gears?
