Re: G-11 Re-Lube

Brian,

I got a tube of Lube Gel from Radio Shack for $3 or $4. A 3 oz tube should
last quite a long time. It claims Superior adhesion:stays where you put it,
Non-toxic and Non corrosive, won't wash off, didperse, break down or turn
rancid, does not attract dust or other contaminants, Impervious to salt and
fresh water and a temperature range of -45 to +450 F. works extremely well
from what I have seen so far and am looking forward to using the mount the
first clear night I don't have to work the next day. Hope this helps.

Any who have not attempted this really should. The difference is

I expect to get much better guiding using my ST-8 just due to the
lack
of friction that relubing cured.

Again, thanks for all the advise.

Re: GM8

If you have DSC encoders then its a good idea to get the delrin covers..they
prevent the encoder cables from getting caught in the gears.

FW: RA drift and PE

Glenn Ray

I'm a new owner of a used G-11 (about 2 years old). I pretend to think
I've read through all the instructions (and previous threads here) and am
unable to find an answer to my problem.

First problem: I am currently experiencing RA drift, before PEC, of up to
40 arcseconds every 5 minutes. I thought that perhaps I hadn't tightened
the RA clutch enough, or that I hadn't properly distributed the weight
(note that I didn't say "balanced"). I've got clutch knobs and am
tightening the clutch about as tight as I can, short of using tools.

Second problem: PEC doesn't appear to work. I've had a lot of experience
with PEC training with my C8 Powerstar mount (which had excellent PE of
less than 5 arcseconds with training). Under the best circumstances, I'm
noting a PE of about 15 arcseconds, peak-to-peak, AFTER PEC.

I know that the fault probably lies in the user and not the mount, so I'd
appreciate any advice on what I need to do to correct this.

Thanks,

Glenn Ray

GM8

Brian Kennedy

I have a GM8 and some questions.

1) I am reading alot about tearing down and relubing the GM11. Is
this something I should consider doing to my GM8? If so, what is the
best lube to do this with?

2) My mount came without the delron gear covers. Should I invest in
them. Will they offer me that much more protection. Thanks.

Adair,

I have a CG-11 with same setup except a ST-8 and Van Slyke Slider. I
have and additional 11 Lbs. and have no problem with balance, even room
to add some additional equipment if I wanted. I would go with no less
then 10 Lbs. Hope this helps.

Steve

Re: G-11 Pwr Cable Connector

Sean Houghton

My power cable broke when I tripped on the cable and the wires came out of
the cigarette adapter. After having to do some soldering I just tied a small
knot in the cord right before the wires exit the cigarette plug. This way
if you kick the wires they pull on the knot, not the solder connection.
Just a tip.

Just a note here, (to get it off my chest, and because I know
that Scott reads this occasionally :-)

I absolutely love my G11. Fabulous piece of equipement. Built
like a rock, and worth every penny. The ONLY cheap bit on
the whole thing is the power cable. I learned this after accidentally
stepping on it one evening and watching the plug break, ending
early a productive evening of shooting.

My solution was to buy a pack of the little plugs intended for
universal power supplies. One of them was the right size, and I
was able to build a corresponding socket for it. Now if I step on
the cable again, the little end piece will simply come unplugged.

It would be a good upgrade to include with the scope.

The Radio Shack model uses a slightly larger plug (5.5mm I think),
but it works fine - I picked up one for a spare and tested it. These
are fuse protected in the part that plugs into the battery so pick up
a pack of spare fuses, just in case. It's in the $5-6 range.

Re: JMI NGC MAX complete install kit for G11

the only encoders to get are the ones from Losmandy, other encoders interfere
with the clutch operation..you can use any computer you like. Get the delrin
encoder covers and route the cables neatly with clips etc..

You know, the G11 has nice mechanical settling circles..

Glenn,

Any of the Tangent boxes will work but as far as the encoders are concerned the Losmandy encoder kit
is the best for the mount. If you don't have the delrin gear covers, get them also.

DSC coiled cable

This G11 addition looks great and works well.

I bought a standard, 12' black good quality coiled phone cable and
cut it into three pieces. One about half the length and one about 5"
long (coiled size) and put the remainder in the spare parts box. The
longer is for the Dec encoder since it moves the most. One end of
each fits nicely into a RJ-45 connector side-by-side (8 contacts) and
the other ends each go to a RJ-14 connector (6 contacts). You will
need to check your current cable to see which one goes to which side
of the RJ-45 and the direction of the RJ-14.

You will need to straighten out the ends that were in the middle of
the coil a bit (bend opposite direction by hand and hold for a while).

This solves two problems, first the coiled cables don't get in the
way. Second, the shorter cable prevents you from plugging the cables
into the wrong encoder (but I sure that never happened to you).

If you know anyone who does computer networking that will probably
have the crimper and the ends. (or about $35 from Radio Shack for a
combo crimper + plastic RJ-XX ends)

Good luck.

PS: Does anyone know of a source of 6 conductor black COILED cable
for making spare motor cables?

Yes. That's why I went back to the Allen-key bolts.

The knobs seem to shift a little in the enlongated pier slots. A
shim between the pier and head would pull the knobs to the top of the
slot and stop the slop as would accurately set round holes (Not a

Has anyone else noticed this?

Fred Park

Hi there,
I use a feeler guage and gradually increase space until the worm is free to
turn the wheel gear with a little backlash. In RA a little backlash is OK
since we only drive in one direction. Adjust balance so the motor drives
against a slight load. Make sure the clearence is proper for the full turn
of the wheel. And the latest on lubrication is to use Slick 50 as
recommended by Steve Losmandy.

Yes, you can push it by hand or slew it at 32x sidereal, the G11 has a top speed
of 16x and it takes forever to slew. I often starhopped with an 8*50 finder and
the 32x speed of the GM8

2. I am planning to build an `observatory'; four walls and a deck, no
roof (bless the neighbors, but curse their lights). How will the
GM-8's head hold up under weather?
It will hold up real well, there is nothing in the mount that will corrode.
Since you plan on a permanent setup you may consider just buying the head, no
tripod..and setting up a pier. Also, you would not need the polar scope.

A Dessert Storm cover would work well, also an upside down trash can..try to
keep a 25w light bulb on at all times inside the cover..this will keep the mount
warm and prevent condensation as the metal cools at night. You could even make a
rigid cover out of Sonotube and some plywood.

Why not put a roll-on roof on the observatory?, very convenient as you can leave
the ota mounted too.
