Any success with TX-500 firmware update from linux.
Hi All, just joined the group.
I have a Lab599 TX-500 that I received last year when they finally started shipping. I am trying to use the linux update software to update the firmware, but failing. The downloaded app does not seem to open at all. I have set it to being executable. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. It is in my downloads directory and when I try to run it, nothing happens. So has anyone successfully used linux to update the firmware on their TX-500, and if you did, what exact steps did you take to get it to work? I have the digital cable and that is known to work with digital programs on the Raspberry Pi. I am using Ubuntu 16.04 if that is needed information. I don't have a windows computer to use for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated and perhaps a step-by-step detailed procedure could be worked out for us linux users. Thanks in advance, Michael |
Single-ended audio output (MIC/SP)?
The MIC/SP connector provides speaker output in balanced form (rather than single-ended form); although I've not measured it, I assume this is due to biasing both SPEAKER+ and SPEAKER- to DC midpoint, hence why the manual states "Do not connect a speaker to ground, pin 6."
How can I safely (that is, complying with LAB599's statement above) drive a single-ended external audio output device from the TX500? I bring several receivers together in single-ended fashion (grounds tied together, signals through potentometers which go to a summing junction then to an external audio amplifier. Can (for example) SPEAKER- be tied to ground through a capacitor (470 uF, 16V or something else typically used as a DC block for single-ended audio output?) Thanks for any advice or precautions. Thanks for all the great info in this thread! Will be filing away that aluminum enclosure for future projects. I have a couple of follow up questions 1.?I have an XGGcomms Digimode 4 that has both audio and serial CAT out and only uses one USB port. The one I have is wired for the Xiegu G90 but I could modify it. Will the TX-500 work with this type of serial interface? 2. The ZLP Minipro SC has a DTR pin for PTT. I like that as it avoids fiddling with VOX. Another poster showed a diagram that uses this PTT method but it is undocumented on the Lab599 documents. Is there an authoritative source for all the pin outs on the REM/DATA port? And the CAT port for that matter? This has been a great help, thanks again! Re: Building a Digital Mode Data Interface Cable
Thanks for the link! This is the same box that DigiRig uses. I just ordered one of these. I will report on how it works with the rig once it is in and I have had a chance to play around.? 73, de Steve W0ARK On Tue, May 11, 2021, 12:40 PM Glen Jenkins WB4KTF <wb4ktf@...> wrote: Hi all, |

Re: Battery Pack
John, Congratulations on getting a TX-500.? The last I heard about the battery was on the March 1 Lab599 twitter feed.? There was no announced release date for the battery.? Hopefully it will be available soon. 73, Henry - K4TMC On Tue, May 11, 2021 at 2:57 PM John Dziedziejko <dziedziejkoj@...> wrote: I just received the TX-500 today, any word about when the battery pack option will be available? |

Re: Building a Digital Mode Data Interface Cable
Hi all,
I just built an Interface cable for the Audio Data Cable and included amplifier keying.? The amp is a MX-P50A with manual band switching (gives about 40W output). This interface is all built inside a 1"x1"x2" long aluminum enclosure that I got on Amazon. I used a 4 conductor shielded audio cable and also installed 6 ferrite beads inside the visible heat shrink tubing near to the GX-12 connector. The 10uF capacitor is inside the small enclosure. I did use three stereo audio jacks instead of plugs (also from Amazon). I attach two photos for your information. Glen - WB4KTF, Austin, TX USA |

yes, the 10uF cap is to keep stay RF out. On Mon, May 10, 2021 at 10:43 PM Gary Priest (KC8JOK) via <kc8jok=[email protected]> wrote: Greetings, --

Building a Digital Mode Data Interface Cable
Gary Priest (KC8JOK)
Greetings,
My Tx-500 arrived on Friday! I made a few contacts with it during the Arkansas QSO on Saturday while doing some portable work at a local park. I can tell this is going to be a great radio. I do a good bit of Winlink so would like to get up on digital modes. Lab599¡¯s documentation shows a 10uF cap on the data cable. The audio interfaces I have from ZLP Electronics and XGGcomms already have isolated audio circuits. Is this 10uF cap protecting the audio chipset in the TX-500 from stray RF? This is a new one to me so the nerd in me is at least curious why this is different from other radios. I did notice their reference cable has leads to connect to a computer sound card which I assume lacks the isolation built in to purpose made radio interface gear. 73, Gary KC8JOK |
