I managed to break the unbreakable radio...
6
Somehow I did it, I broke the unbreakable radio, don't know how. I just noticed a crack from the top almost to the bottom of the display cover. I didn't drop the radio, something must have impacted the top of the plastic/glass and the crack migrated down. I have only had it a few weeks, embarrassing! Oh well. Hopefully I will be able to get it right again, I have emailed the US service agent... 73, Kevin K3OX

AF gain volume during TX varies with power
9
CW OP, firmware 1.16.06: I know the AF Gain has two independent settings, one for adjusting RX and one for TX sidetone volume. Normally, I have operated the TX-500 at 100% power (sometimes down to 80%). I now have a PA500 amp and so I turned power down to (10%) on the TX-500 (by the way, it's more than 1W, more like 2W). What I noticed is the AF Gain during TX (sidetone volume) varies with the radio's power. At 10% the volume in my earphones is noticeably lower than at 100%. Has anyone else noticed this and is it normal? -- 73, Norm/KC1BMD

Anyone used a TX-500 with the Hard Rock amplifier?

Anyone used a TX-500 with the Hard Rock amplifier using CAT between the radio and amp? What settings and cabling did you use? Thanks! - Dave, N4ELM

Single Key Polarity inversion not working Rev
4
I‘m usually using a single key and switched it with one that has a reversed polarity. If I change the setting under menu=>CW Key=>Rev (Enabled/Disabled) nothing changes on the key input. One key would then still work properly and the other one have a infinite tone when plugged into the 3.5mm jack. I‘m using firmware 1.23.09. anybody else noticed this strange behavior? Looks like the settings in the menu are not working? 73 de HB9IIA, Pier

TX-500 Supply Voltage Readout Accuracy
4
I discovered that the supply voltage readout on my TX-500 is not quite as accurate as I would like. I use a Bioenno BLF-1203AB battery and monitor the TX-500 supply voltage indication when it drops to around 12.7 Vdc to determine when to recharge the battery. However, I've noticed that the TX-500 supply voltage reads about 0.3 Vdc lower than the true value. So I decided to measure the accuracy and linearity of the voltage readout. I powered the TX-500 in receive mode with a bench DC supply and measured the DC voltage with a calibrated Fluke 87V DMM at each display readout of the TX-500, from 13.8 to 9.00 Vdc in 0.1 volt increments. Of note, the display showed "LOW POWER SOURCE" in reverse video when the DC supply was set to 9.0 Vdc. (BTW, the receive current draw over this range was 100 mA to 135 mA .) The attached Excel workbook contains the measurements and a chart (see below) that plots the Fluke measurements vs TX-500 supply voltage displayed. Also shown is a regression fit of the data, which is as follows: Vtrue = 0.9964 * Vreadout+0.2709 (Vdc) with an R-squared value of 0.9998 So for my TX-500, the readout consistently reads 0.27 Vdc low. I think a nice feature that might be considered in a future firmware upgrade would be to add a user-set battery voltage offset correction for a more accurate readout. I'd be interested in hearing from other TX-500 owners on how your unit reads true. 73, Steve NQ1F

BP-550 User Manual v1.0 for download
3
Looks like the BP-550 will be available soon! And they listened to my request to add USB-C for charging, although you'll need a powerful adapter with PD 2.0/3.0 and BC 1.2. Anyway, I will continue to use my external LiFePO4, which serves me well. 73 Stephan

Troubleshooting audio and mic issues
10
Hello, I have a couple of issues that I noticed on on my recent SOTA outing, and I am hoping to get some help with. >>Issue 1<< I am trying to replace the stock speaker-mic with something lighter. Should I expect the 6-pin adapter to work with regular earphones? Based on a short glipse from the following video it seems like it should work: https://youtu.be/LitUhrdochQ?si=Osdk7iLesIIQ5Pyy&t=116 Unfortunately, when I try it with my earphones I hear a loud noise: https://youtu.be/JFLTgs26gdw My setup in that video is: - Pretty standard earphones with an inline mic, their connector is TRRS - Pretty standard headphone/mic splitter: TRRS to 2xTRS - GX12 6-pin adapter that came with the radio Same results with another headset I tried. >>Issue 2<< Last week I was activating a SOTA summit. I was using the speaker-mic that comes with the radio. I also had headphones plugged in. I was using the MON function as well as the VOM1 to compare recorded audio. This was with the gain and compresion settings that have been verified at home. - On 10m my recorded voice was a bit scratchy, but readable. - On 15m my monitored voice was just garbled noise. I unplugged the headphones, tried again. - On 15m my voice was quite distorted, but not as bad as with the headphones plugged in. I was using an EFHW cut for 40m - a proven, trouble-free performer with IC-705 and KX2. Had a 3m feedline to the radio. Attaching picture of how I was setup on the summit. Thanks for any insights!
