COMPELLING AUTHOR PANEL Oct. 10 in Chicago for Polish Heritage Month: Power of Identity
Greetings near and far For members in the Chicagoland area or Midwest, this promises to be a unique event. Sending the 411 along on this Author Panel Event, in honor of Polish Heritage Month. Best to ALL -GREG ARCHER greg@... POWER OF IDENTITY What does “home” mean for immigrants and their children? 7 pm Tuesday October 10, 2017 Copernicus Center 5216 W. Lawrence Avenue, Chicago (Parking available) More than 75 years after Hitler and Stalin divided Poland and millions of her citizens were thrust into questionable fates, three award-winning authors with recent books converge to honor POLISH HERITAGE MONTH. In a candid panel discussion, learn more about wartime Poland, the underreported chapters in Polish history, and the ripple effects of all war and how it shapes the concepts of home, place and identity for so many. Discover how hope, faith, and resilience become an integral part of any odyssey. DONNA SOLECKA URBIKAS (My Sister’s Mother: A Memoir of War, Exile, and Stalin’s Siberia, University of Wisconsin Press, 2016) www.danutaurbikas.com Writer Donna Solecka Urbikas grew up in the Midwest during the golden years of the American century. But her Polish-born mother and half-sister endured dehumanizing conditions during World War II as slave laborers in Siberia. War and exile created a profound bond between mother and older daughter, one that Donna would struggle to find with either of them. A 2016 award Finalist in the Chicago Writers Association, Society of Midland Authors, the Midwest Independent Publishers Association, her book was also a Bronze Medal winner in the Foreword INDIES competition. The author and her book have been featured on several television and radio programs. “Superbly records the bitter suffering both of victims of the Soviet Gulag and of displaced emigrants.”—Marek Jan Chodakiewicz, author of Between Nazis and Soviets. BARBARA RYLKO-BAUER (A Polish Doctor in the Nazi Camps, University of Oklahoma Press, 2014) www.rylkobauer.com Anthropologist Barbara Rylko-Bauer interweaves personal family narrative with twentieth-century history to present her Polish Catholic mother’s World War II experiences as a prisoner-doctor in Nazi slave labor camps, a refugee doctor in postwar Germany, and her subsequent struggles as an immigrant in the U.S. Built upon historical research and personal interviews, the story combines the mother’s voice and the daughter’s journey of rediscovering her family’s past. Winner of the Gold Medal in the 2015 Independent Publishers Book Awards and the Foreword Reviews’ 2014 IndieFab Book Awards, chosen as a 2015 Michigan Notable Book, and short-listed in the 2016 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. “Through their {mother and daughter’s} incandescent collaboration, the rough stone of memory is tumbled and polished, emerging as a fiery gem.”—Boston Review GREG ARCHER (Grace Revealed: A Memoir, NorLights Press, 2015) www.gregarcher.com Entertainment journalist Greg Archer takes a step back from Hollywood and examines his Polish family’s mind- bending odyssey of the 1940s. In the process, he exposes one of the most under-reported events of the 20th Century: Stalin’s mass deportation of nearly one million Polish citizens to the Siberian Gulags, the life-shattering events that followed, and the lingering thread of Inherited Family Trauma on children of war survivors. The author and his book have been featured on CBS television, and many radio programs. "If David Sedaris and Carrie Fisher joined forces with a Polish Alex Haley, it would be this book." —San Francisco Examiner Donation: Suggested $5 / Light refreshments served. Witam Serdecznie-- I just found this picture of myself and Kilt-maker Mr. William Paul at the Pacific NW Highland Games & Clan Gathering last summer. Mr. Paul learned the tailor's trade as a boy from Polish Army veterans who stayed in Scotland after WWII. His love of Poland rivals my own and I look forward to seeing him and his wife every summer at the Games. I am in the uniform of a subaltern in the 10th Dragoons Regt., 1st Polish Armoured Division. This famous Polish division was organized and trained in Lanark, Scotland before landing at Normandy in 1944 and fighting through France, Belgium, Holland, and finally on to Germany where they took the surrender of the German Navy HQ in Wilhelmshaven in 1945. After the war many of these men chose a life of exile in Scotland after the war as returning to communist "People's" Poland after the war was not safe for Poles who served with the Western Allies. Wesolych Swiat / Happy Christmas! Antek & Krysia Begin forwarded message:

On spoken Polish and spoken Gaelic
I loved this bit, from a Wall Street Journal review of The Marches: A Borderland Journey Between England and Scotland," by Rory Stewart: “Welcome to Scotland / Fàilte gu Alba”: “The people who lived on this spot today, like 99 per cent of Scots, spoke English. Over the last 2,000 years, people here had spoken Cumbrian Welsh, Latin, Northumbrian, Norman French, and Borders English, but they had never spoken Scottish Gaelic and they had never called this place Alba. . . . Only 58,000 people in Scotland out of 5 million spoke Scottish Gaelic in 2012; almost as many spoke Polish; and there were twice as many people in Scotland of South Asian descent.” Yet the sign is in Gaelic.<< We see the same signs in Ireland, of course. There are even make-believe ones, like Telefon for Telephone. -- Daniel Ford USA

Welcome new member David Rydzewski
2
Please join me in welcoming new Kresy-Siberia group member David Rydzewski, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA. I have invited David to come over to our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/KresySiberiaGroup/ ------------------------- David writes: "Hi, though all of my grandparents were born in either Mazovia or Wielkopolska my wife’s father was born in Nadworna and later resided at one time or another in Stanislawow , Lwow and Kolomyja. He was Chaeskel Mondschein and he was Jewish. On an unknown date he was deported by the Soviets to Siberia. We know that at one point he was in the area of Solikamsk and/or Krasnokamsk near the Ural mountains. We believe he served in the Red Army (after the amnesty?) though he likely did not carry a weapon. In 1945 or 46 he returned to his home to discover that his wife, son and parents had either been shot or died in the Nazi established ghetto. Chaeskel also had a brother named Monio who was arrested in 1940 by the Soviets. We believe he also survived the war in Siberia. Both were later forcibly relocated to a town near Wroclaw. My wife left Poland in 1969. I have been researching my own family history for well over a decade and have as a result met family who continue to reside in Poland. Discovering my wife’s roots has been more difficult given the Nazi destruction of all things Jewish."
