thank you for sharing it with us. I always believed that it was the mothers who were the most amazing heroes of this deportation, especially as many of them had to take their families forward without their husbands (my own grandfather died in Aktiubinsk (Uzbekistan) on the train route out of Siberia). I am doubly impressed by "Kosmopolitanczykiewicz¨®wna" (did I put the ¨® in the right place?). "Authorities have uncovered evidence of a mass grave of Polish officers executed by the NKVD (Soviet internal security police) in the Bykowni forest near Kiev. Found were remains of shoes, uniforms and personal effects as well as railwaymen's uniforms. Polish experts are investigating the site with a view to deciding whether to create a symbolic memorial to the officers there or continue further exhumations. It is estimated that 20,000 - 100,000 victims of the NKVD may be buried there in mass graves." -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia ---------- From: "Wladyslaw Czapski" <biorytm@...> |
FW: Camps
Stefan Wisniowski
Susanne has passed on some of her family history. The Soviet deportations
continued for many years after the war, and no people were immune from the Soviet's calm and efficiently brutal terror. Stefan ---------- Hello Stefan Did you have a "Kazakhstan deportation" connection?Yes, my father's first cousin, Olya Klimkovych (father Ivan Klimkovych), was arrested in 1949. Someone turned her in to the secret police. She said she was put on trial in Moscow by a three man judicial body. She was not there and there were no witnesses. She was sentenced to 10 years and sent to Kingir in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan. She told me of the strike in 1954 by the prisoners, the Kirgin Uprising. The strike was for 42 days, planes were sent in over the camp using tear gas and then soldiers were sent in to end it all. Some 750 prisoners were killed. She was ill at the time and sent by train to Taishet Russia then returned to Karaganda. She was at the camp until 1956 when she finally released under the amnesty and was given 12 rubles and a train ticket to return to her village of Czercze. I would like to learn about her arrest and dates, and all circumstance. She is still alive, but remembers little now to talk about. I visited with her twice in Ukraine and write her often. She gets a lot mixed up and is confused about dates and details. Her husband was also arrested and sent to a GULAG. Yaroslav Darmitz' was arrested on October 27, 1948 under article 54-1a, 54-11. He was sentenced to 25 years. They sent him to Vorkutlag, arriving on May 1, 1949. The amnesty released him on March 24, 1956. He died, October 23, 1995, unable to remember and talk about his time in the camp. He was in very poor health. He had once been a pharmacist in Rohatin. I have tried to find all I could about the GULAG camps and conditions. Also the criminal code they were arrested under. I want to know it ALL. Susanne M. Saether |
Re: "Rescued from Death in Siberia"
It was a great pleasure for me to be present at the premiere of this
film attended by many of the people who appear in it as well as their families and interested parties. Michael Adamski must be congratulated for his effort, particularly for the use of rare historical footage which gives a historical context to testimony both shocking and inpsiring. About a dozen survivors of the deportations to the USSR tell their stories in a seamless and compelling manner starting from their childhoods in Poland (all were teenagers or younger) and ending with their present lives in Canada. Between these two poles we share tragedy and rescue. Hopefully this film will find its way to the English-speaking media. Chris Gladun, Toronto |

(* state farm) Nearest railway station : SHORTANDY, AKMOLENSKI REGION Please note the "venue" was not a camp but a sovhoz ie a state farm. The Soviet soldiers (armed) who visited us during the night used the term free resettlement, perhaps meaning no payment of fares required. I will endeavour to supply more information by dealing with your relevant unanswered e-mails. Of the above, Aniela died of starvation like?so many other Polish souls, while Jadwiga remained at the sovhoz until 1946 and return to the family's home town of Sulwa?ki?having survived?reading locals' palms to tell their?fortunes in exchange for food scraps (my grandmother was a survivor but never did she claim to be a fortune teller).??Sulwa?ki, not Grodno, was home.? However, my grandfather, Jadwiga's husband Tadeusz, an army officer, was relocated to Grodno in 1938 as the army prepared for the gathering storm, though my father, Leszek, stayed in Sulwa?ki with an aunt for his final school year, while my aunt Zosia was at university in Pozna¨½ (I think).? Tadeusz was murdered at Katy¨½ in early 1940.? Zofia, who is still alive in suburban London, was an officer in the Polish Women's Army (the ATS?) having, like my father father, been taken out through the middle east.? Czes?aw (Czesiek), I think went via the middle east initially, but then went on to the United Kingdom for RAF training. Czesiek died some years ago in Nottingham, England. For those who wish to know more of the detail,?bear with me.? My father took to e-mail at the age of 78 and now, two years later, he finds it difficult to concentrate.? With him on the other side of the world, filling in the gaps is difficult but I continue to gently encourage him. Be that as it may, I know his story included escape with a young man of similar age (Dad was 18, the other 17) from the sovhoz with the intention of returning to Poland.? Eventually they were picked up, put on 'trial' (quite where I will have to confirm, but he said that it lasted 1 minute) and sentenced to a year each for being so? ungrateful to their Soviet hosts for liberation and free re-settlement.? I do recall him saying that as he was led away from the dock, an old lady slipped something in to his hand as he passed by.? It turned out to be a small lump of lard, which in the cold of the Soviet Union, where pea soup?looked like hot water and contained no evidence?whatsoever of a single pea, he described as being?like the finest?food one could ever ask for.? What strange acts of kindness there could be; who was that anonymous old lady who realised the injustices that took place in Stalin's courts and took pity on him by providing a lard which was as rare as gold dust????For my father, one year was a light sentence because?he told the court he was 17 and not 18. There was then a period in prison where he learnt Russian so as to read to the illiterate Soviet inmates, mainly criminals in the non-political sense, with whom he shared his cell. I have noted how many contributors ask for clues as to what became of a parent, parents or grandparents?who are now, sadly,?no longer available to?tell of their own experiences.? Thus, I am lucky in having the opportunity to ask.? However, I think?the experiences?endured were those one would face in a living hell and, as such,?many chose to forget the deprivations visited upon them as simply too painful to recall. Perhaps the name of the place of deportation mentioned above will serve as a?signpost in others' search? for their piece of Polish and family history. Hi Alexander,
Thank you for providing the opportunity to follow up file information on deported family members. My problem is, and maybe someone else in the group can help me here, that a) I don't know where my grandmother was sent to in Kazakhstan b) I don't know her date of birth (though do know her father's name) and c)don't know the date she died. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDear Stefan and all other members of the
Kresy-Siberia group.?
?
Some weeks ago I joined this group ?indicating
that my father's family had undergone deportation.? My father, who is still
alive and living in England, has never gone over the experiences in great
detail.? After deportation there was release and service in the Anders Army
which took the familiar route through Iran, Iraq, Palestine, followed?by
action in Italy.?
?
With age my father had been struggling to recollect
the detail of his experiences.? Nevertheless, below is information on who
amongst his family took the cattle trucks?east.? ?

Date of

?
Deported
from:?????????????????????????
Grodno
?
Place of deportation, details:???? KAZCIK
which is the abbreviation for: SOVHOZ* of the KAZAKHSTAN CENTRAL EXECUTIVE
COMMITTEE??? (* state farm)
?
Nearest railway station : SHORTANDY, AKMOLENSKI
REGION
?
Please note the "venue" was not a camp but a sovhoz
ie a state farm. The Soviet soldiers (armed) who visited us during the night
used the term free resettlement, perhaps meaning no payment of fares
required.
?
I will endeavour to supply more information by
dealing with your relevant unanswered e-mails.
?
?
Of the above, Aniela died of starvation
like?so many other Polish souls, while Jadwiga remained at the sovhoz until
1946 and return to the family's home town of Sulwa?ki?having
survived?reading locals' palms to tell their?fortunes in exchange for
food scraps (my grandmother was a survivor but never did she claim to be a
fortune teller).??Sulwa?ki, not Grodno, was home.? However, my
grandfather, Jadwiga's husband Tadeusz, an army officer, was relocated to Grodno
in 1938 as the army prepared for the gathering storm, though my father, Leszek,
stayed in Sulwa?ki with an aunt for his final school year, while my aunt Zosia
was at university in Pozna¨½ (I think).? Tadeusz was murdered at Katy¨½ in
early 1940.? Zofia, who is still alive in suburban London, was an officer
in the Polish Women's Army (the ATS?) having, like my father father, been taken
out through the middle east.? Czes?aw (Czesiek), I think went via the
middle east initially, but then went on to the United Kingdom for RAF
training.? Czesiek died some years ago in Nottingham, England.
?
For those who wish to know more of the
detail,?bear with me.? My father took to e-mail at the age of 78 and
now, two years later, he finds it difficult to concentrate.? With him on
the other side of the world, filling in the gaps is difficult but I continue to
gently encourage him.
?
Be that as it may, I know his story included escape
with a young man of similar age (Dad was 18, the other 17) from the sovhoz with
the intention of returning to Poland.? Eventually they were picked up, put
on 'trial' (quite where I will have to confirm, but he said that it lasted 1
minute) and sentenced to a year each for being so? ungrateful to their
Soviet hosts for liberation and free re-settlement.? I do recall him saying
that as he was led away from the dock, an old lady slipped something in to his
hand as he passed by.? It turned out to be a small lump of lard, which in
the cold of the Soviet Union, where pea soup?looked like hot water and
contained no evidence?whatsoever of a single pea, he described as
being?like the finest?food one could ever ask for.? What strange
acts of kindness there could be; who was that anonymous old lady who realised
the injustices that took place in Stalin's courts and took pity on him by
providing a lard which was as rare as gold dust????For my father, one year was a light sentence because?he told
the court he was 17 and not 18.? There was then a period in prison where he
learnt Russian so as to read to the illiterate Soviet inmates, mainly criminals
in the non-political sense, with whom he shared his cell.
?
I have noted how many contributors ask
for clues as to what became of a parent, parents or grandparents?who are
now, sadly,?no longer available to?tell of their own
experiences.? Thus, I am lucky in having the opportunity to ask.?
However, I think?the experiences?endured were those one would face in
a living hell and, as such,?many chose to forget the deprivations visited
upon them as simply too painful to recall.
?
Perhaps the name of the place of deportation mentioned above will serve as a?signpost in others' search?
for their piece of Polish and family history.
?
Regards

offer to assist anybody in the group seeking original file information on their deported families from the former Soviet archives. Alexander is on the "Polish Committee" of the Memorial Society in Moscow - which is a group acting in the cause of the memory of the millions of people repressed by the Soviet system. I believe that the main file he has access to is from the Archangel archives, but there may be other sources on other regions as well. -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia ---------- From: "Alexander Gur'yanov" <gurpolcom@...> |
