Book on Siberia/Wanda
Hi, my aunt in Poland was telling about how her father (my grandfather) was sent to Siberia and because there were a rich noble family and had connections they forged a document and he was released at ?an old age after spending 5 years in Siberia ?was put on a train back home to Kobryn and someone recognized him, he was so skinny with fleas under his arm pits, just awful he arrived on December 22nd and 2 days later died on December 24th, on his birthday! coincidentally December 24th is my birthday also, my aunt could not believe the coincidence my mother had to confirm it.I can ask her to write me everything she remembered her father Tomasz Adam Dabrowski told her, he also sent letters from Siberia, I will scan and email it to you for the book.
Good luck Nadia. |
Re: Forgotten? Not even acknowledged
The biggest problem is that people in the West didn't know about the Soviet
invasion in '39 and what went on in those areas after that date. Nobody cared to ask as the Germans were allied with the Soviets until the invasion of the Soviet Union when we all became allies against Hitler. Supposedly then there were other more important things to sort out, only later if my history serves me right when the big three met up Stalin wanted it all, Roosevelt didn't give a damn about eastern Poland and Churchill although he tried valiantly was outnumbered and had no choice in this matter. (His memoirs ought to be read on this subject) When I used to travel as a child to see my g/parents those things were taboo in Poland, none of the kids my age even knew about it. The history books were "rewritten" by the "UB" Service, or as my g/father called them "Poprawiacze Histori". The mere mention of these things was enough to get you sent to a "colder" climate It seemed strange to me that all of this was/had been covered up, only later as I grew older did I begin to understand the magnitude of it all and why my g/parents clung to the old traditions and values which my mum passed on to me We even had the old Polish Eagle hanging on the wall, the one with the crown on it's head and my g/father refused to remove it Something else to think on, my mum was born in Biala, Podole, Poland. which is on her birth certificate, but her passport said different Old Polish - Biala, Ukraine, ZSSR How can this be changed at will, it should stay as it was since where she was born wasn't Ukraine at that time, no matter how much we ask the Polish Consulate for explanations, the same thing always comes back "Silence" Paul To: Kresy-Siberia@... cc: Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] Forgotten? It was a very well put together WW2 documentary that used a lot of live (and colour) footage coupled with first-hand accounts from diary entries and letters. Distressing indeed - not only because of the horrors and magnitude of the war depicted but, for this Kresy-Siberia member, because it focused entirely on the Nazis and Japanese as being the bad guys (which of course they were), and portrayed Stalin as an ally. Their only mention of the Polish occupation was in reference to the Germans and the atrocities carried out on the Polish Jews. Nothing was mentioned about the Russian occupation (except only to say that Germany had reneiged on its deal with Russia in carving up Poland - thus inferring Russia had a right to be there in the first place), or the deportations and deaths of Polish citizens. How did our families' plights get to be such a hidden piece of history? Grace |

Re: Siberia
Reply to Nadia:
We are in the process of collecting memoires of survivors of the work camps and prisons in Soviet Russia. The purpose? Their are the stories that were never told. If the facts were known maybe Allies would not have sold the Eastern Europe into russian slavery at Yalta. Editor of polish weekly in Toronto The Alliancer , Stanislaw Stolarczyk , will translate and edit this book in english lanquage. Canadian publlic does not know much of european history even less of polish.. Many people have passed on and their story will never be known. The book will contain only the details of survival in the camps. If You wish to contribute we will be happy to include Your story. Wanda |

HI Jan and Nadia,
Thank you for your messages. I picked up the phone t'other day to call Mrs Goddard at the MOD re. my grandaddy Tadeusz Pundyk and while I was waiting to be connected and thinking about how I could explain myself effectively enough, I noticed that there is actually no 'official requirement' for my father's death certificate on the form they had sent me to prove that I am the next of kin, even though this is what they said they required in their covering letter. All that is required 'officially' is a copy of my grandfather's death certificate (which I have). So...I scrapped the idea of the phone call and instead decided to hedge my bets on the formalities of the form. Fingers crossed! Social Security Administration
I was wondering if anyone could help me with an electronic address
for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. The reason I ask is that i'm in Australia and I found an entry of a Wasyl Sycz who died in the USA in May 1979. This name is the same as that of my Grandfathers and I'd thought it would be worth a try to see if he was in fact my GF. Thanks Denis |
