Group status report
Stefan Wisniowski
For any members who missed it, the report I issued on the Second Anniversary
of the Kresy-Siberia Group has been posted on the website at: c As I said in the report, what the next year and beyond holds for the group is up to you, the members. 2004 is an important year, marking the 60th anniversary of heroic victory in the Battle of Monte Cassino (May 11-18, 1944) and tragic defeat in the Warsaw Uprising (August 1 - October 2, 1944). As an all-volunteer group, we depend completely on the initiative and generosity of our members. If you have any ideas or just would like to help out somehow, please e-mail me on Kresy-Siberia-Owner@... Best regards Serdecznie pozdrawiam, Stefan Wisniowski Moderator Sydney Australia |

a retired Canadian Army Officer. -- Original Message --military history in WW II. My own father fought side by side with Polishsoldiers in Italy. I have visited the battle fields of Cassino and Rimini(Gothic Line), and have seen the cemeteries containing the sacred remains ofcountless Polish heroes. My heart is saddened by the unspeakable events thatoccurred in wartime Poland, but I cannot comprehend the cruel fate thatbefell Poland at the hands of the Allied powers in 1945. It seems a paradox thatafter supporting their Soviet and Western Allies in costly militaryactions against the Axis powers in North Africa, Italy , Northwest Europe and theEastern Front, the Poles were betrayed in the 11th hour by the very allieswho purported to support their cause in the first instance. Shame and infamy! Imyself have served with Polish members of UN contingents in Egypt and theGolan Heights. They were proud and professional soldiers, and I salutethem for their national pride and their Christian tradition. Long live thememory of of Poland's heroic sons who lie in in forgotten battlefields.God bless Poland and her proud history of Christianity andindependence. |

Stephen:
I hope I will be proved wrong, but it is possible that you will not receive a reply from the Sikorski Institute (SI), as has been the experience of many. Unfortunately the SI is staffed by unpaid and mainly part time staff and the organisation has to make do with very limited resources. Also it is sad to say, but all very true, (but I can say this from personal experience) that the SI is languishing somewhat behind the times. You may be better off telephoning and trying to arrange a personal visit should this be practical. Above all you will need to be both persistant and patient. Very interesting article
Robert Ambros
There is a very interesting article in this month's online edition of
the Sarmatian Review entitled: "Writing Counterhistory in Non- Germanic Central Europe." The article touches on Anders Army in Palestine but it's scope is broader and discusses how "Polish stories" are sytematically edited out of history. It can be found at: For anyone interested, there is also a review of "The Brief Sun" in the same edition of the Sarmatian Review at: For the new members, The Brief Sun is a historical novel about Anders' Army. An online edition is available by clicking on "files" on the home page of the Kresy-Siberia Group. Bob |
Re: Where is my parents village in Poland ?
Have you tried the 'Shtetleseeker' on the jewishgen.com website? It's a
great tool( and website) for finding villages. I'm unable to find my parent's village on maps or any reference on the web. They lived in Ulanska Dola in Wolyn. I heard them also mention that their village was near a town called Targowica. Can anyone help me find this place?? Zyg Martynowicz |
information
julek2205
To All,
It would great if we put together on our site a central area that would give detailed information as to who to write to, what to ask for, what you will need to submit, specific form needed, addresses, phone numbers and other data regarding question we have about our relatives, their lives, our past history etc. There seems to be a great need for a central area on our site for this. I hope someone will take on this duty, review all of the past postings and assemble this in a logical form. Julek |
Re: Welcome Joasia Kubicka
Hi Joasia,
I am Stephen Wierzbicki and am also requesting information from MoD UK. I seem to be a little further ahead in the process than you at the moment so I thought it might be helpful if I let you know what documents you will need to supply to MoD before they will release any records of service. I found that replies take about 10 days in UK. You will have to prove that you are next of Kin (NOK). To do that you need to do two things (presuming the person you want details of is deceased): 1. If you are the widow of or the widow is alive you will require a copy of the service members death certificate and a copy of the widows marriage certificate. The widow will also have to complete and sign MoD Form 1000 (supplied by MoD) to release service records to the widow without contravening the UK data protection act. If you want the details sent to you the widow will have to supply a letter giving permission. 2. If you believe that you are NOK then you will need to supply a copy of the deceased service persons death certificate and a copy of your own birth certificate stating the relationship. Again if you are not the legal NOK then you will need to have the birth certificate of the NOK and a letter agreeing top let you have the service records. The relavant person will also have to complete and sign MoD form 1000 to confirm Kinship. Hope this is of help and allows you to prepare documents before the MoD reply with the MoD Form 1000 and make for a quick turn around. Good luck Regards Stephen Wierzbicki PS Does anyone know how the process works with the Sikorski Institute? I am still waiting for a reply from them after three weeks. ===== Stephen Wierzbicki ________________________________________________________________________ Want to chat instantly with your online friends? New member
Hi Everyone!
My name is Kenneth Fedzin and I was born, and still live, in Dewsbury, England. I am 50 years old and I am the second son of Jan Fedzin. My father was born in 1920 and lived in the village of Dawidkowce, Czortkow province, in the Tarnopol region. My father died in October 2000. My Grandfather,Leon Fedzin, and his entire family(including my father)were deported to Siberia around 1940. My father told me little about this ordeal, but I do know that their story is exactly mirrored by the film " A Forgotten Odyssey". I only learned about, and ordered, the film a couple of months ago. It was a moving experience for me to come to realise the scale and nature of these events. Although my Grandmother died during this ordeal, most of the family survived but became seperated. My father and a brother came to England, from Italy, at the end of the war after travelling through Mongolia and Persia. Other family members were eventually re-settled in the former German territory which is now Western poland. -------------------------------------------------------------- On a recent visit to Poland a cousin, who was also with them in Siberia as a young boy, gave me a more detailed account than my father had done. But I still did not know anything about Dawidkowce, my Grandfather or my G.Grandfather. The family 'Folklore' in Poland told that my Great Grandfather was actually a Colonel Kazimierz Staszewski. That he was a Landowner and he too was exiled to Siberia in the 19th C. by the Russians and had his land confiscated. After escaping he married a Russian woman called Fedzin and took her name to avoid re-capture.That is all anyone ever knew, nothing more. This prompted me to research my family history and this is also how I discovered the 'Kresy' website. Only this month I have received this information from a lady in Poland who is helping me. Col. Staszewski was captured by the Russians whilst acting as a Commander in Chief during the 1863 Insurrection. He declared that he was an Austrian liege, and in 1865 he was sentenced to 8 years hard labour in Western Siberia. An 1870 Manifesto granted him pardon and he returned to Poland. However, he was soon recognised/betrayed and reported to the Authorities. He thus appeared before a Court Martial in 1871 under his real name of Leopold Marcin Golebiewski, son of Ignacy Golebiewski, born around 1832 in the estate of Mroga Gorna, in the Brzeziny District. He was charged as a deserter from the Russian 83rd Samarski Regiment(there was of course no Polish army at this time). He was banished to Eastern Siberia on 10th June 1871. An 1883 manifesto allowed him to return only to Western Siberia, under Police control, but without repayment of his fortune or titles. I have been reading the e-mails with some interest. If anyone can offer any info about my family, or the villages mentioned, I would be delighted to hear from you. Regards, Ken. |
