Re: Comprehensive List of Kresy Refugees to Africa and beyond
Dear Henry,
?
I am very interested in finding more details regarding my grandmother, mother and aunt, who ended up in a refugee camp in Rusape Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), their names are Katarzyna Golinska, Monika Golinska (30.10.1925) and Zofia Golinska. The two sons are somewhere in UK, one Josef Golinski (06/06/1924) was in the British Army. Would you be able to send a copy of what you require scanned and I will see if the Librarian can assist in scanning the document for you and I will return it to you. My address is Flat 23, 65 Cedar Street, Glasgow, G20 7NR and my contact numbers are (0141) 353 0163 or 0798 574 1181.

Kind regards,

Marandellas (Morondera) cemetary
Hi,
?
Following on from Bert Bakker's email about the
cemetary at Tengeru, I just wanted to mention another Polish site at
Marandellas.
?
My mother's family were based here, although Mama
attended the girl's boarding school at Digglefold. It was in Marandellas that my
Dziadek, Piotr Brodalka, died in 1945. He is buried in the cemetary that was
close to the camp.
?
Until recently (about 2 years ago) we weren't
quite?sure about what had happened to this graveyard. We were prompted to
investigate when my cousin and her husband travelled to Zimbabwe to find
the?old camp, and reported back to us that the place had been replaced by a
new housing devlopemnt. This, as you can imagine, upset my mother greatly. So I
rang the embassy of Zimbabwe in London several times to ask for information, but
drew a blank - they really weren't interested in helping.
?
It was then that somebody suggested we write to the
Misja Katolicka in London to see if they could help us. Through them, we were
given the name and address of a Polish missionary based not far from Morondera.
We sent him a letter. A few weeks later, back came a reply that he had travelled
to Morondera and managed to locate the Polish cemetary. He said it was very
overgrown and that some of the stone crosses had been broken. But, he also
promised us that he would clean the graveyard - this he did with help from
people in his parish.
?
We now have photos of my grandfather's
grave.
?
My mother still writes to the priest and we send
him donations to help with the unkeep of the cemetary.
?
I also mention this now, because All Soul's Day
is?approaching and many Poles will be visiting their family's graves. We
will be in Rugby where my Babcia and Tata are buried. But, it will also be good
to know that the Polish graves in Morondera will also be blessed again this
year.
?
Pozdrowienia,
?
Halina

Dear Stefan,
Thank you for your prompt reply.
I would feel honored to share in the Kresy-Siberia Group.
Let me know what I need to do.
All my life I have stayed close to the town in which I currently reside; the one in which my mother and father settled in. ?It really never occurred to me how far & rich my father's roots will take me away from here.
I open my heart and mind to what I can learn and share with this group.
I am 38 years old. My father was born in Poland in served with the Polsh Corp. I want to learn about his journey that took him here to the US. He died in 1970. I do not even know his birth place. I do have his identification card:

Just in case no one has posted about the following resource, allow me to bring it to the attention of readers of this list.
My mom (American for 'mum':), subscribes to a quarterly publication called "Wolyn Blizej" (Wolyn Closer).
The publication consists of reprints of pre-war articles and photos as well as some current ones from the Kresy. I'm looking at the August 2000 issue, which has an article about the visit of a expert on Hops from Prague to Dubno. Apparently, Wolyn produced 75% of Poland's hop crop before the war. The hops were cultivated by Czech settlers in the region of Dubno.
There is even a report of the organization of a Zwiazek Sybirakow in Rowne in 1930.
Some other localities mentioned in the issue are: Luck, Zaslan, Kwasilow, Zdolbunow, Tomachow, Wisniowiec, Horochow, Cuman, Troscianiec, Kowel, Mirogoszcz, Kostopol, Nowy Dwor, Tiutkowicze, Wlodzimierz, Horodnica, Borowe, Ostrog, Zielona, Sarny, Budiatycze, Warkowicze, Orzew, Klesow, Teodorowka, Majkow, Kostiuchnowka, Maniewicze, Podchorce, Janowa Dolina, Poryck, Uscilug, Wankowiczowka, Starosiel and others.
"Wolyn Blizej" is in its 10th year now and is the quarterly publication of the "Spoleczny Komitet Pomocy Parafii Rzymskokatolickiej w Rownem na Wolyniu" (Committee to Aid the Roman Catholic Parish in Rowne in Wolyn).
The address is: Pani Krystyna Wojciechowska, Redaktor "Wolyn Blizej" ul. I.J. Paderewskiego 7/38 63-100 S'REM POLAND

Hi Joasia, I am Stephen Wierzbicki and am also
requesting information from MoD UK. I seem to be a little further ahead
in the process than you at the moment so I thought it might be helpful if I
let you know what documents you will need to supply to MoD before
they will release any records of service.
I found that replies take
about 10 days in UK. You will have to prove that you are next of Kin
(NOK). To do that you need to do two things (presuming the person you
want details of is deceased):
1. If you are the widow of or the widow
is alive you will require a copy of the service members
death certificate and a copy of the widows marriage certificate. The
widow will also have to complete and sign MoD Form 1000 (supplied by MoD)
to release service records to the widow without contravening the UK data
protection act. If you want the details sent to you the widow will have to
supply a letter giving permission.
2. If you believe that you are
NOK then you will need to supply a copy of the deceased service persons
death certificate and a copy of your own birth certificate stating the
relationship. Again if you are not the legal NOK then you will need to have
the birth certificate of the NOK and a letter agreeing top let you have
the service records. The relavant person will also have to complete and
sign MoD form 1000 to confirm Kinship.
Hope this is of help and
allows you to prepare documents before the MoD reply with the MoD Form
1000 and make for a quick turn around.
Good
luck Regards Stephen Wierzbicki
PS Does anyone know how the
process works with the Sikorski Institute? I am still waiting for a
reply from them after three weeks.
===== Stephen
Wierzbicki

Dear Helena,
?
Many thanks for writing to me, I know they are somewhere in the UK, my one uncle was in the British Army, I have confirmation of that, but they will not disclose any further information. There is a small Polish Club down the road from me, I have tried them, but they just tell me to look on the website or to write to the Polish Records in Glasgow, which I have done, but never received a reply from them and they do not accept visitors to this place. I will not give up hope, but get rather despondent at times, when I know that someone somewhere must know them, I have even written to the British Red Cross, who have advised that it may take some time before any results will be forthcoming.
?
Thanks for your assistance, please do keep in touch. my contact numbers are 0141 353 0163 or 0789 574 1181, address is Flat 23, 65 Cedar Street, Glasgow G20 7NR.

Re: Comprehensive List of Kresy Refugees to Africa and beyond
Sounds like an amazing experience, I was only 4 but I remember some experiences Someday I would like to return and visit, especially since the museum is being established. My mother, who just passed away this august, and I left for England in 1948 to be reunited with my father, this was the first time I saw him. He was in Anders' Army and was not there when I was born. I would like very much if you looked us up on the list--me Janusz DZIURZYNSKI and Janina DZIURZYNSKI. Thank you.

My family was in Masindi camp in Uganda (Anna and Zosia Sokolowska and Marysia Skiba)

I would also like to find out which camp my mother and I were in in Africa. My mother was Wanda Gorska and I am Krzystof Gorski. When we were traveling from Africa to Italy my mother was with a group of 26 other people including Francisca and Marian Sokolowska. Henryk, are they related? Chris Gorski
